The Manggha Center of Japanese Art and Technology

Krakow’s outpost of the Japanese creativity and ingenuity opened in 1994. It is the biggest such institution in the whole Central and Eastern Europe. The Center’s wave-shaped building on the bank of the Vistula river just opposite the Wawel Hill was designed by Arata Isozaki, the renowned Japanese architect. As a branch of the Krakow National Museum it houses the Japanese rarities in its possession. They were amassed by a wealthy Polish connoisseur, Feliks “ Manggha ” Jasienski, by the end of the 19th century and donated to the museum in 1920. His collection has contained pieces of art such as fabulous Japanese woodcuts plus splendid artifacts of ancient handicraft, ornate weaponry, etc. The Manggha Center of Japanese Art and Technology itself is a brainchild of Andrzej Wajda, the renowned Oscar-awarded Polish film maker, who also contributed his $ 340,000 Kyoto city award and raised the outstanding $ 5.5 million to erect it. The Manggha Center organizes various temporary exhibitions, concerts, presentations, etc., pertaining mostly but not exclusively to Japan’s national heritage or its present-day achievements.

Eating Scenarios for Westerners
Scenario 1
Tom was at the dinner table for the first time with his new host family. His host mother, Mrs. Yoshida, was a good cook, and there was plenty of food on the table. Tom enjoyed the meal as well as the pleasant conversation. He ate so much that he felt absolutely stuffed. When he said, "Totemo oishikatta desu. Gochisoosama deshita." (It was delicious. Thank you for the meal."), both host parents insisted that he eat more, saying, "Mada takusan arimasu kara, motto doozo" (There is plenty more, so please eat more.") Tom declined their offer very politely by saying he had had enough, but they insisted again. Tom was dismayed but he felt hesitant about resisting their offer. He put more food on his plate and finished it somehow. Why did Tom end up eating more than he wanted?

REALLY CLOSE TO THE BONE A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING ENGLISH IN TOKYO DON'T READ THIS IF YOU'RE NOT PREPARED TO ACCEPT REALISTIC
PORTRAYALS OF WORKING AS A "GAIJIN NO SENSEI" IN TOKYO
I 've been teaching English in Tokyo six years now, and seldom have I seen anything like this in print. L ots of people trade these kinds of tales informally in conversation, but I they don't usually write them down. I 'm a member of ESL Loop, the CUNY TESL Listserves, and so on, so I'm always reading postings from prospective teachers that would like some good information about what life would be like for them if they came to Tokyo. W hen I surfed across this page, I immediately wanted to link to it for the benefit of any of those people who want to find out what teaching English in Japan can be like. A t first, I couldn't find the author's email anywhere on the site to ask him if that would be ok. As you'll see, if you go there, his site doesn't identify him by name at least that I could find on my first visit and doesn't give any references for feedback until the end of chapter 13. Turns out his name is Mark Thomas, and the rest of the contact information is there, too you can order his book from that spot as well. S ince I was really pleased and impressed with the candid look at English teachers' situation here Mr. Thomas had accomplished in his piece, I jumped the gun and hooked up to his page anyway. Hope he doesn't mind.
