Cons
Don't buy into believing a magazine can teach you how to write Full Review *: I’ve written several articles for The Writer and other how-to-write magazines, so I should be biased “toward” the magazine, right? Well, I will get no more money than I’ve already earned from The Writer for work I’ve published there so far, so maybe I can give an unbiased review with a little bit of an edge here. About The Magazine The Writer bills itself as the “oldest magazine for literary workers in the country.” The claim is probably true. Since 1887, The Writer has been publishing a pulp-paged informational magazine to help writers hone their crafts. I think the staff looks at The Writer as a trade magazine for folks who already publish their work regularly.

Pros
Good information and entertaining for the right audience.
Cons A bit racier than I remember. The Bottom Line Redbook has been around for a long time and will remain a friend to millions of readers. Full Review I found a really great price on magazine subscriptions about a year ago. For $3.00 a year, I could subscribe to Redbook. Since I used to subscribe to it a long time ago (and liked it very much), I jumped at the opportunity. In fact, I decided to have it mailed to the school that I teach at instead of at home. Since we often use magazines in our language arts projects, I figured it would save me the trips carrying heavy stacks of magazines back and forth. From all that I remembered about Redbook (and Good Housekeeping Magazines) was that there were always great pictures that could be cut out and used for projects. There were even quick articles that could be read and have topics and issues that would work as writing prompts. In these sections there are also movie star interviews (this month with Christina Applegate and Celine Dion). They have chic rain gear; an article about low cut dresses; simple pimple treatment; how stress can be good for your health; how to melt away winter weight; 7 safety rules when finding a hospital for your sick child; and even a personal experience story by Lauren Picker about being sad during pregnancy.

WORLD REPORT EDITION IN THE NEWS
Lynne Cheney, author and wife of Vice President Dick Cheney
Read Mrs. Cheney's special message to readers, as excerpted from her new book America: A Patriotic Primer
We live in a land of shining cities and natural splendors, a beautiful land made more beautiful still by our commitment to freedom. I wrote this book because I want my grandchildren to understand how blessed we are. I want them to know they are part of a nation whose citizens enjoy liberty and opportunity such as have never been known before. Generations have passed from the earth never dreaming that people could be as fortunate as we Americans are. I want my granddaughters to know that, and I want them to love this country. Their parents want this for them too, and so what they do, and what the Vice President and I do, is teach them about the United States, about its geography and its people and its history. We believe, all of us, that the story of this country is its highest recommendation. Few tales are more wondrous than that of the founders of this country seeking independence and - against the odds - winning it. Few plots are more thrilling than their deciding to establish a representative form of government and - against the odds - succeeding. And few stories are more heartening than the way that the idea of equality, which was the basis for their actions, has expanded over the subsequent two centuries, including more and ever more of us in the phrase "we the people." I hope that parents and grandparents will use this book to teach children about Washington's character, Jefferson's intellect, and Madison's wide-ranging knowledge. The upcoming generation should know about these men and their thoughts and aspirations. They should also know about the courage of Frederick Douglass, the determination of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, and the impassioned leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. Our children should realize that these men and women made us a better country.

It is unfortunate that in America, the greatest nation in the free world, few people including those with high incomes understand the value of investing and the proper use of money strategies. You can live off your income, but you can't get wealthy off your income. Wealth is the result of using principles such as are in this book.I also strongly recommend "Millionaire Next Door" and for managers and leaders, read"Direct from Dell" by Michael Dell. Great books. COMMERCIAL Worldwide Press Release Circulation up for BBC Magazines Radio Times This area of the business, under Publishing Director Ashley Munday, encompasses not just Radio Times itself but also all brand developments, including new media and books. Radio Times continues to stabilise its circulation in the paid for listings market with a drop of just 3.3% year on year and an increase of 1% period on period, following a particularly successful Christmas for the magazine. New Editor Gill Hudson, who took the helm at end of June 2002, has refocused Radio Times on what readers like best about the magazine and has placed heavy emphasis on editorial quality and originality, as well as thought-provoking features. New family-friendly spots include a weekly RT Kids' Panel that invites children to give their frank opinions on current television aimed at them, as well as Family Viewing symbols on the listing pages to highlight programmes the magazine feels are suitable for the entire family to watch together. Investment in the expansion of digital, cable and multi-channel TV and radio listings ensure the magazine is now the most comprehensive listings publication available in the UK. Radio Times now includes full schedules for the new Freeview service as well as popular digital radio stations.

The Failure of the Churches Let us remember: Christ has not failed It is the human element which has failed and which has thwarted His intentions, and prostituted the truth which He presented. Theology, dogma, doctrine, materialism, politics and money have created a vast dark cloud between the churches and God; they have shut out the true vision of God's love, and it is to this vision of a loving reality and to a vital recognition of its implications that we must return. Is there any chance that a renewal of the faith as it was in Christ will return? Are there enough men of vision in the churches to save the day - a vision of [125] meeting the need of man and not a vision of the growth and aggrandizement of the churches? Such men do exist in every religious organization, but they are deplorably few. Even if united (which seems as yet sadly impossible because of doctrinal differences), they present a somewhat futile group versus the organized power, the materialistic splendor, the vested interests and the fanatical determination of the reactionary ecclesiastics of all faiths. It is usually the struggling minority (in this case the spiritually-minded few) who guard the true vision and finally bring it into being; they are the ones who walk the torrid, unhappy streets with agonizing humanity and who, therefore, recognize in an acute sense the need for the regeneration of the churches.

Bailey - Chapter V I, in the meantime, had started a Secret Doctrine class and had rented a room on Madison Avenue where we could [190] hold classes and see people by appointment. This Secret Doctrine class was started in 1921 and was exceedingly well-attended. People from the various Theosophical societies and occult groups came regularly. Mr. Richard Prater, an old associate of W.Q. Judge and a pupil of H.P.Blavatsky came to my class one day and the next week turned his entire Secret Doctrine class over to me. I mention this for the benefit of United Lodge of Theosophists and for those who claim that the true Theosophical lineage descends from H.P.B. via W.Q. Judge. All the Theosophy that I knew had been taught me by personal friends and pupils of H.P.B. and this Mr. Prater recognized. Later he gave me the esoteric section instructions as given to him by H.P.B. They are identical with those I had seen when in the E.S. but they were given to me with no strings attached to them at all and I have been at liberty to use them at any time and have used them. When he died many years ago his theosophical library came into our hands with all the old Lucifers and all the old editions of the Theosophical magazine, plus other esoteric papers which he had received from H.P.B. Among the papers which he gave me was one in which H.P.B. expressed her wish that the esoteric section should be called the Arcane School. It never was and I made up my mind that the old lady should have her wish and that was how the school came to get its name. I regarded it as a great privilege and happiness to know Mr. Prater.

Are you a typical genealogist with boxes or file cabinets bulging with census records, deeds, and marriage certificates? You probably have some military pension files and a collection of flowery obituaries. Perhaps you found some long-lost cousins and have pages and pages of correspondence and photocopies of documents from shared research. But if you are a typical genealogist, you also want more! You want the maiden name of your great-grandmother. You want to know exactly when your immigrant ancestor arrived in the United States. Or maybe you cannot figure out where your great-great-grandparents married. The answers to your genealogical puzzles may be buried in periodicals. Have you looked? If not, you are missing a gold mine of information.

    • The Spiritual Magazine For The Modern Scientific Brain
This magazine is our humble effort to present the timeless Vedic wisdom of India in a manner that would appeal to the modern mind, especially to the brilliant youth of today. For too long this wisdom has been thrust upon on wary generations as a set of rituals and beliefs to be somehow accepted without thinking or questioning. The truth, however is, that this spiritual wisdom of SANATANA DHARMA is a rational, comprehensive and logically consistent body of knowledge. It not only deals systematically with phenomena within our common experience but also opens up our minds into realms of knowledge and experience that are utterly beyond the jurisdiction of sense perception. A serious study with an open mind will reveal the flawlessness of the philosophy. In confusing the externals with the essence, a vibrant and dynamic philosophy has been reduced to a stagnant, mechanical and ritualistic way of life. The Vedanta Sutra exhorts us: "Athato brahma.jijnasa" "Now inquire about the Absolute Truth". We are not asked to accept on blind faith but rather, we are encouraged to depart from the beaten track and question the very nature of our existence and the how's and why's of our life.
