high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
    • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
    • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
    • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
    • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

The Great and General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, also known as "The Massachusetts Legislature", during its 1999-2000 session, ordered that $150,000 be allocated to a study of the impact of Logan Airport on the health of surrounding communities. Because the budget year runs from July 1 through June 30, the money would be available, pending final budget approval, no earlier than July 1, 2000, for the fiscal year 2000-2001. The legislative action was in response to the Winthrop Health Study, efforts by Winthrop elected officials, and the health concerns of many communities in the vicinity of Boston, Massachusetts.

State Standard-Setting Efforts In 1994 when Geography for Life: The National Geography Standards The commitment to standards-based reform is very strong in every state except Iowa. In the past year 39 states have either prepared new or revised existing academic standards. Forty six states are developing or already have in place assessments and other accountability systems to measure achievement on their standards. The Education Commission of the States has prepared a document on standards and education subtitled A Roadmap for State Policymakers . National organizations like the American Federation of Teachers and the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation issue yearly reports evaluating the quality of these state standards. How has geography fared in the development of state standards? To what degree has Geography for Life influenced state standards? Is geography better off today than it was before the standards were issued? These questions are the focus of this article.
