Research Council Studentships. We receive a number of Research Studentships, which provide support for three years for students registered for higher degree by research, and Advanced Course Studentships, which are for one year and are for the MSc/Diploma Courses. Most of these studentships are from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC); the Department applies for these studentships on your behalf. They are allocated on a competitive basis which, in practice, means that only students with first or upper second class degrees are likely to receive grants, although the MSc Course Studentships may be available for lower second class degrees. The NERC Studentships are open to British students (covering fees and maintenance grant) and students from other European Community countries (

N. Robert Wilson, Professor of Physics and Meteorology and Program Coordinator
Scott Grinnell, Assistant Professor of Physics and Meteorology The Physics program offers courses to address the three following objectives:
  • to teach the basic principles and techniques of physics for meteorology, natural science, and other majors; to offer advanced instruction in electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, and modern physics for physics minors and meteorology majors; and to offer instruction in the application of microcomputer technology for problem solving in the environmental sciences.
  • Meteorology is a field that draws from various math and science disciplines to answer complex questions about our planet. We can use meteorology to help address environmental issues such as air and water pollution, global warming, and the feasibility of alternative energy systems. The major in meteorology is a rigorous program involving advanced course work in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and meteorology. It includes all of the course work recommended for meteorology positions within the National Weather Service and prepares students for a wide array of careers in this multifaceted field. The major also prepares students for graduate studies or for careers in other sophisticated science fields. Students completing the curriculum requirements for the meteorology major will also earn a Physics minor.

Meteorology seeks to understand the behavior and predictability of the Earth's atmosphere and requires good foundations in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science. Required undergraduate meteorology courses are combined with courses in other disciplines to develop an academic background that is appropriate for a variety of employment opportunities. Graduate students receive advanced training in meteorology and usually perform research under the direction of a faculty adviser in specialty fields that include climate modeling, cloud physics, dynamic meteorology, numerical weather prediction, large-scale and mesoscale modeling, remote sensing, radiative transfer, and synoptic meteorology.

    Ph. D. General Examination Rules
Approved November 9, 1995 by the faculty of the S.O.M.
According to the Graduate College "The [General] Examination is intended to test the student's mastery of a number of related fields as well as capacity for synthesis, sound generalization and critical ability [sic]."
In the School of Meteorology, the assessment by a General Examination consists of two distinct parts. The first part is called the "Qualifying Exam" (rules attached). The Qualifying Exam tests the student's breadth of knowledge of advanced meteorology. The content and required level of competence is commensurate with the scope of the graduate lecture courses taught by the School of Meteorology. In exception to standard Graduate College rules, the Qualifying Exam is a uniform exam and prepared by the entire faculty, and not by the student's Doctoral Committee. Also, the Qualifying Exam may be attempted without formal application to the Graduate College for permission to attempt the General Examination.
The second part of the General Exam is usually referred to simply as "The General Exam". The General Exam may be attempted after passing the Qualifying Exam, and the student submits a formal application to the Graduate College for permission to attempt the General Examination at this time. In the School of Meteorology, the General Exam consists of the student writing and defending a "Prospectus of Dissertation Research", as well as answering any other questions about science or meteorology that the committee asks in the oral exam.
