A "related service" staff of a school psychologist, an educational diagnostician, a speech pathologist, an occupational therapist and two speech/occqpational therapy technicians continuously service the special education classrooms. An Agency-housed Special Education Office staffconsisting of a child find technician, a secretary, a budget technician and a coordinatorsynchronize program offerings. The Special Education Office yearly surveys the Agency's schools to ascertain program strengths and weaknesses. The SY-84 questionnaire investigated parental involvement in special education, regular educator understanding of special education practices and procedures, exceptional student achievement and teacher certification. Results of this survey reported that parents had minimal knowledge of their child's special education program and regular educators expressed difficulty teaching the mainstreamed exceptional child.

Minnesota Teacher Survey Results
The information in this section is based on responses from 75 Minnesota teachers who began their teaching careers during the 1994-95 school year and who were still teaching in 1999-2000. This sample was chosen to be representative of the entire 1994-95 population of newly hired Minnesota teachers (1,276 teachers). All 75 teachers were asked to indicate the availability of, and their satisfaction with, 21 characteristics associated with teaching. The teachers then were asked to rate the importance of each characteristic for their decision to continue teaching. Table 1 below shows the 12 characteristics that the novice Minnesota teachers judged to be important to their decision to continue their teaching career, the percentage indicating the perceived importance of each job characteristic, and the percentage indicating satisfaction with each job characteristic. It indicates some of the disincentives for beginning teachers to continue teaching in Minnesota. Table 1. Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Back to Home ... Living Wednesday, Apr 09, 2003 Education Posted on Mon, Oct. 07, 2002 Teacher certification pushed National board has approved thousands of applicants, but few in Pa. or N.J. take part. By Melanie Burney Inquirer Staff Writer WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP French teacher Catherine Russo is a novelty in her Gloucester County district. She is the only Washington Township educator to achieve national board certification and one of just 46 in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, 47 teachers hold the honor. Russo, who teaches seventh and eighth graders at Chestnut Ridge Middle School, was certified in 1997 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. "It's probably the most productive form of professional development I've ever done," said Russo, a teacher for 12 years. While national certification has been embraced by educators across the country, it has been slow to catch on in New Jersey. Nationwide, more than 16,000 teachers have received the certification. A new group will be named next month from among 20,000 candidates.
