On the way into Wendover from the west , the freeway tops a rise and then sweeps down toward the Bonneville Salt Flats below. If you pull over to the side of the road at the crest and park for a few minutes, you can study a view unlike anything else in the world. The Salt Flats extend in a broad white plain, the desert's skin stretched tight, as far as the eye can see - and it curves. The horizon line is a clear arc from side to side, and the two stripes of freeway pavement curve away across the alkali toward the vanishing point. Nowhere else on land can you actually the curvature of the earth.
Columbus was right! Almost as amazing as its shape is the earth's texture and color here, spread out in horrid immensity: surely the cruelest desert your eyes will ever see. And where the bleached and crusty sea of alkali meets a shoreline of dead brown hills, is Wendover. Feast your eyes on that scene for a while. You'll never forget it.

McGill is a small town bordering US 93, 12 miles north of Ely. Named for William N. McGill who sold part of his ranch property for the Steptoe Valley Mining and Smelter Company (Nevada Consolidated Copper Co.) (Later Kennecott). The McGill ranch Post Office had been established in 1891. After the mill was built, the little settlement was briefly known as Smelter before being changed to McGill. McGill was a "company town" that was strictly managed by the copper company. Houses of ill repute and gambling dens were prohibited. The town was segregated by nationality and the center of town was reserved for only those who had reached high status jobs within the mining company. Residents lived in neighborhoods segregated according to their national origin. The concentration mill, other buildings and trestle which covered an area of nine acres caught fire and burned to the ground in July 1922. By 1930, the mill was rebuilt and handled 14,000 tons of copper ore daily. McGill has remained populated and has a business center. The local swimming hole is just north of the town. http://www.nevada.navy.mil/html/history.htm
HISTORY OF SHIPS NAMED NEVADA The first NEVADA was a 335-foot, 3850-ton screw steamer built for the Navy in 1863. Because of inferior construction, she was never armed and was sold after nine years.
The second USS NEVADA (BM 8) was a 252-foot, 3200-ton harbor defense monitor. She was built in 1898 and served in the Atlantic until 1906. At that time NEVADA and several of her sister ships were transferred from the fleet to duty at the Naval Academy. They were kept active during the summer months for the annual Midshipmen cruise. She was renamed TONOPAH in 1909 to allow Battleship Number 36 to be named NEVADA and was sold in 1922.
The third NEVADA (BB 36), a 583-foot, 27,500-ton battleship, began her long and distinguished career in 1916. Her Commanding Officer was Captain William S. Sims, who later became Fleet Admiral. She entered World War I at Norfolk, VA as a training ship for the crews of "four-stacker" destroyers and as a gunnery training ship for men who would be the armed guards on merchant ships. In 1918, NEVADA joined OKLAHOMA (BB 37) and UTAH (BB 31) as part of a deterrent squadron to prevent German battle cruisers from breaking out of the North Sea and attacking North Atlantic convoys. The Germans never challenged her. The super dreadnought was a menace to the enemy without firing a shot. Between the wars, NEVADA conducted two diplomatic South American cruises and in 1922 became part of the Pacific Fleet.

A unique look at Castillo Del Sol, from the house'ss architecture, to Liberace'spianos, Nevada, Las Vegas history and more. The nevada history Yard.
http://www.principality-of-paradise.com/nevada_history_yard.htm
The Nevada History Yard.
The entire backyard is a topographical representations of Nevada. The colors represent different elevations. You can see the white atop of many high mountains found in central and northern Nevada. In Spanish, Nevada means "snowy mountains". The map runs south into the Arizona-New Mexico Territory which was still together at the time context of the map, 100 years ago. Tom Doolan, the artist, used artistic license to include some modern features such as the Test Site and the Stealth Base. Roy Prucell added the discovery trails passing through Nevada a century ago.
The map continues further south into Mexico. The spa represents Mexico city which was built on a lake. The countries of Central America are represented on the wall and along the model of Hoover Dam. The Central American countries are the lands of the Mayan civilization and the Yucatan Peninsula. Belize, formerly British Honduras, can be prominently seen. The country of El Salvador is depicted in red even though the recent election has made this country markedly right wing. Nicaragua is also in red. It is the destination of Lonnie's secret underground railroad called the TransContra-nental Railroad. It is used for covert shipments of arms into Nicaragua.
The next point of interest is the model of Sunrise Mountain. you can see the geological strata dropping diagonally which represent the cross sections of rock seen in the Grand Canyon only 50 miles to the east. This fault is internationally known for its geological findings. Locally it is more known for its interesting shape, its history in relation to the early settlers and the earliest paintings in the Valley. Lately it is noted for the recently constructed Mormon Temple. The model of the mountain was consecrated by an Indian who lives on the mountain and by the local leaders of many religious denominations.

H I S T O R Y License to Steal: Nevada's Gaming Control System in the Megaresort Age by Jeff Burbank Varied criminal activity, innovative (but illegal) financial dealings, and the brilliant use of technology for ill-gotten gain, all have been involved in the schemes of unscrupulous casino owners, employees, and gamblers throughout the decades of legal gambling. Gaming in Nevada is more stringently controlled than anywhere else in the United States, and in License to Steal, investigative reporter and editor Jeff Burbank provides a lively and highly readable case history account of some of the most significant and most fascinating cases adjudicated by the Nevada Gaming Control Board and Commission during a pivotal time for the growing gaming industry. The Roar and the Silence by Ronald M. James A History of Virginia City and the Comstock Lode The Roar and the Silence chronicles the area's history from its earliest days through the early twentieth century, when the lode finally gave out and the Comstock sank into silent decay, and up to the present, when Virginia City and its environs found new life, first as a community of bohemians and artists, and more recently as a tourist attraction offering a taste of the frontier experience to visitors from around the world. James's text brings the Comstock to life again in all its complexity and boom-and-bust excitement. This book offers a wealth of new information and insight into the history of one of the Old West's most storied areas.
