NEVADA HISTORY: Site of first pioneer settlement in dispute Historians disagree on whether spot in Genoa or just north By MARTIN GRIFFITH
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Sonia Dehart, 96, talks in her Genoa home about the ongoing controversy over the exact location of the historic Old Mormon Station, site of Nevada's first pioneer settlement. Photo by Associated Press GENOA Three weeks ago, history buffs thought they were standing on hallowed ground when they gathered for a ceremony to honor Nevada's first pioneer settlement. They unveiled a new historical marker claiming to be at the site of Old Mormon Station, one mile north of this quaint town nestled against the Sierra Nevada. "I'd give it a 95 percent probability that it's on the exact site," Joe King of Reno said then. Now, other historians think the marker is on the wrong spot. They say research since the Jan. 10 ceremony suggests the pioneer settlement was in Genoa itself news that comes as no surprise to some longtime Genoa residents. "I knew all the old-timers from the 1800s, and they all said the site of the original Mormon Station was in Genoa. There was never any doubt about it," 96-year-old Sonia Dehart said.

Reynolds School of Journalism:
A History of Vision
The first journalism course at the University of Nevada was taught in1921 in the English department. The next year, English professor Alfred Higginbotham , who had experience as a newspaperman, began teaching two courses, then four, and by 1924, six men and five women posed for a picture as the first graduating class in journalism at the university. Higginbotham continued, mostly alone although with the help of an occasional part-time instructor from the local newspapers, the Nevada State Journal and the Reno Evening Gazette, until the end of World War II, when he recruited a former AP writer, Keiste Janulis , to become the second professor in a new Department of Journalism. For two more decades the department remained a newspaper-oriented program, working closely with the rural press in Nevada and the dailies in Reno, Las Vegas and Sacramento. Higginbotham was also the founder of the Nevada State Press Association, which he started with the university as "home" for the organization, and of both the professional and student chapters of Sigma Delta Chi in Nevada. Additionally, he started one of the nation's first chapters of Kappa Tau Alpha at this university.

Mexican War . These accounts may have aided Brigham Young when he was shepherding the Mormons west to build a new home in the mountains and valleys of Utah.
The Lure of Minerals
When in 1850 the federal government set up the Utah Territory, almost all of Nevada was included except the southern tip, which was then part of New Mexico. Non-Mormons had been averse to settling in Mormon-dominated territory, but after gold was found in 1859 non-Mormons did come into the area. A rush from California began and multiplied manyfold as news of the Comstock Lode silver strike spread. Most of the newcomers preferred to consider themselves as still being within California, and a political question was added to the general upheaval. Meanwhile, miners came helter-skelter, raising camps that grew overnight into such booming and raucous places as Virginia City. Partly to impose order on the lawless, wide-open mining towns, Congress made Nevada into a territory in 1861 as migrant prospectors and settlers poured in. The territory was then enlarged by increasing its eastern boundary by one degree of longitude in 1862. It was rushed into statehood in 1864, with Carson City as its capital. President Lincoln (in order to get more votes to pass the Thirteenth Amendment) had signed the proclamation even though the territory did not actually meet the population requirement for statehood.

LAW SCHOOL RECEIVES LARGEST GIFT IN NEVADA HISTORY
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has received the largest charitable gift pledge in Nevada history from James E. Rogers and the Rogers family for the new William S. Boyd School of Law. The donation, given through the UNLV Foundation, is a combination of an outright gift and pledges of future support that will total more than $28.5 million, UNLV President Carol C. Harter announced during a press conference and reception on Nov. 4 at the Richard Tam Alumni Center. "Mr. Rogers' extremely generous gift will help us create one of the finest public law schools in the West," said Harter. "He is an outstanding business and community leader who has proven many times that he places an enormous value on higher education." Rogers, a prominent Las Vegas attorney, founded Valley Broadcasting Company in 1971 and has served as CEO of KVBC-TV (Channel 3) in Las Vegas since 1979. He is also the principal owner of Sunbelt Communications Company, which owns and operates NBC-affiliate television stations in Nevada, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. "Education, especially my legal education, enabled me to succeed in business, and I want to share that success with future generations of students," Rogers said. "You can only create an exceptional law school if you have the money necessary to keep tuition low and attract outstanding faculty and students. It is also a privilege to help create the Louis Wiener Jr. Law Library to honor the memory of my long-time friend and partner."

As The Tale Is Told
One of the most notable features of the community is the Historical Downtown area located on Seventh Street and bordered by Starr and Lake Avenues. The buildings in this district were constructed from 1876 until 1920 and served as the center for business and recreation. A little known fact was that Jack Dempsey, famed boxer of the 1920's, was discovered in Wells while working as a bouncer for the Bullshead Saloon. This fact is disputed on both sides of the tracks as to whether this is true or not and yet no matter which tale one chooses to adhere makes for a very colorful story either way.

The Wells Bank, standing alone on Seventh Street, was the first lending establishment built in 1911. It's first president was Morris Badt who also was the first merchant in the community having operated a mercantile store since 1876. Wells Bank Building (Today) Currently, there is enormous movement in the historic downtown district with renovation on nearly all of the buildings to bring back their unique bygone days. Plaques have been posted on the buildings to inform the history buffs and tourists about each buildings past as they enjoy the 'Walking Tour' which also offers them a place to sit and relax at the new Heritage Park located on the corner of Lake Ave. and 7th Street.

The History Of The Nevada Rotary Club Willis Shaw The Nevada Rotary Club got its first start one afternoon in February, 1922, while Frank Flack, local manager of the Iowa Railway and Light Company, was en route from Ames to Nevada in company with Luther Aasgard, publisher of the Nevada Representative. Frank suggested to Luther that there should be a Rotary Club in Nevada. Marshalltown is called the parent club, because it was through their efforts, and especially the efforts of their secretary, Edgar A. "Shorty" Francis, that the required meetings were held on March 15 th th , April 4 th th , and May 2 nd . The charter was presented in the Library on May 19 th Since its organization, the Nevada Rotary Club’s achievements in Nevada have consisted of steady and traditional contributions to community life, to education, and to international study. In 1949 Bob Walters was one of 73 worldwide scholars selected by the Rotary Foundation for advanced study overseas. Bob joined the Nevada Rotary Club in October, 1951, and is still a member. In the 1960’s the club enhanced the local cultural scene by importing "big bands" for concerts, and sponsored a Travel and Adventure Series of movie-lectures that attracted large crowds. th nd The Nevada Rotary Club has supported local and foreign study opportunities through scholarship programs. In 1990 Richard Selby was given funding to assist him with Russian language studies, which led to his working in Russia through Iowa State University developmental projects. Jeff Wilson, of Colo, received a Rotary International Scholarship for the 1990-91 school year at the Universidal Autonoma of Guadalajara, in Jalisco, Mexico. Ann Marie Golgerty of Colo-NESCO High School, was a non-Rotarian member of the Group Study Exchange team that visited South Central India in 1995. Nevada Rotarian, Claudia Nehring, hosted Guy Taningvong of Thailand in 1993-94.
