Encyclopedia Nevada History Early Exploration Mexican War . These accounts may have aided Brigham Young when he was shepherding the Mormons west to build a new home in the mountains and valleys of Utah. The Lure of Minerals When in 1850 the federal government set up the Utah Territory, almost all of Nevada was included except the southern tip, which was then part of New Mexico. Non-Mormons had been averse to settling in Mormon-dominated territory, but after gold was found in 1859 non-Mormons did come into the area. A rush from California began and multiplied manyfold as news of the Comstock Lode silver strike spread. Most of the newcomers preferred to consider themselves as still being within California, and a political question was added to the general upheaval. Meanwhile, miners came helter-skelter, raising camps that grew overnight into such booming and raucous places as Virginia City. Partly to impose order on the lawless, wide-open mining towns, Congress made Nevada into a territory in 1861 as migrant prospectors and settlers poured in. The territory was then enlarged by increasing its eastern boundary by one degree of longitude in 1862. It was rushed into statehood in 1864, with Carson City as its capital. President Lincoln (in order to get more votes to pass the Thirteenth Amendment) had signed the proclamation even though the territory did not actually meet the population requirement for statehood. The Federal Government and Population Growth Hoover Dam Nevada's population, sparse since the time when the Paiute and other tribes eked out a meager living from the land and animals, increased by 650% between 1950 and 1990. The fastest-growing U.S. state, Nevada is increasingly home to retirees and to workers in new, especially technological, industries.

HOPKINS REVIEW-JOURNAL Elizabeth Nelson Patrick, a historian who saved more than her share of the vanishing history of Southern Nevada, died April 18 of bone cancer. She was 76. Patrick spent 30 years in Southern Nevada gathering oral histories from its pioneer residents, collecting and identifying historical photos and preserving historical buildings. Born in Indianapolis in 1924, Patrick was educated at Butler University. She later earned a doctorate in history from the University of New Mexico. In the 1980s, the Nevada Humanities Committee and the Review-Journal hired Patrick to record "The Pioneer Tapes," a collection of particularly important oral histories from then-elderly Southern Nevada pioneers. The tapes were permanently archived at UNLV Special Collections, and Patrick wrote an article from each, which was published in the newspaper's "Nevadan" Sunday magazine. While working at Special Collections, she was also involved in selecting photos for the magazine's "Help Us Write History" feature, which each week published a historical photo and asked readers to call with information about the people in the pictures or the context in which the photos were taken.

It supports threatened fish and hundreds of thousands of breeding and migrating water birds, including spring and fall visits from 1,400 common loons - the largest known congregation west of the Mississippi. Walker Lake's existence spans millions of years. Along with Pyramid Lake in northwest Nevada and Mono Lake in eastern California, Walker is a remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Lahontan, which covered much of central and northern Nevada during the last Ice Age. As the climate dried, Lake Lahontan receded and many closed valleys became isolated dry lake beds. The Walker River is one of three major rivers draining the east slopes of the Sierra Nevada, supporting riparian, wetland and desert lake ecosystems. Native Americans inhabited the Walker Lake basin dating back 11,000 years or more. A hunter-gatherer society, the native families traveled in small groups relying upon pine nuts, game and Walker Lake trout. At that time, flows to Walker Lake are estimated at 250,000 to 300,000 acre-feet of water per year (an acre-foot is approximately 326,000 gallons of water, enough to cover a football field in one-foot of water). Flows to Walker Lake have averaged less than 100,000 acre-feet a year since the 1930s.

On the right, or south, side of the road, [near 12300 Stillwater Road] there was once a huge grove of cottonwood trees. They had been planted in such a manner that there was enough space between the rows to allow teams and spring wagons to drive in, thus the people and animals could enjoy the shade. This area was very popular as a picnic spot, and each 4th of July the local residents and guests held a major celebration among the trees. Later, a ballpark was situated near there. The Kent family sold this one hundred acres to Mary deArmond Patterson and her sons on March 24, 1924. The trees became the victims of a receding water table and the Patterson brothers’ saws. Today, all that remains of the lush grove of cottonwoods is a near-empty lot at 12300 Stillwater Road.

Emma's Story In 1861, Dr. William Wixom, a physician at a nearby mine, moved his wife and new daughter Emma to the Broad Street house in the thriving town of Nevada ("City" was added later). In 1865 the Wixoms moved to Austin, Nevada where Emma's singing career blossomed.
