and Relaxation A special web-site by Robert Parry, writer and practitioner of oriental medicine
Tai Chi is an exercise system that combines slow, graceful movement with calm, regular breathing. It has many styles and uses in the world today - becoming very popular as a means of maintaining good health and feelings of relaxation and calm. These are the aspects of tai chi which you will find presented here - along with tai chi's associations with oriental medicine and the philosophy of taoism. Video/Audio Cassettes History of Tai Chi
The Short Yang Form
Books ... Seasonal Notes - Spring Tai Chi practise is based on a sequence of movements called 'a form.' The short tai chi form takes around eight minutes to do, and should be done daily. The aim of tai chi is to cultivate and circulate the body's vital energy. The movements are natural - like a floating cloud or running stream. In tai chi the arms move in a relaxed, circular fashion. Steps are taken very slowly, or else the feet remain firmly rooted to the ground - the weight shifting gently from one side to the other as you go. Breathing is centred in the abdomen.

Acupuncture has been a major part of primary healthcare in China for the last 5,000 years. It is used extensively for a variety of medical purposes ranging from the prevention and treatment of disease, to relieving pain and anesthetizing patients for surgery. As in many oriental medicine practices, the emphasis of acupuncture is on prevention. In traditional Chinese medicine, the highest form of acupuncture was given to enable you to live a long, healthy life. The earliest written account of acupuncture is found in the Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine). This document is believed to be from around 200 BC and is one of the oldest comprehensive medical text book. Pien Chueh, a famous physician of the fourth century BC, used stone acupuncture needles, moxibustion and herbs to bring a prince out of a coma. The Chinese still celebrate his birthday every year on April 28th. Acupuncture - Table of Contents What is Acupuncture?

75. Midwest College Of Oriental Medicine
Offers Master of Science in oriental medicine. Racine, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois.
http://acupuncture.edu/midwest/
Today's student of Oriental Medicine knows that widespread changes are occurring in the health care system, from basic research to education and training, to the delivery of, and payment for, services. Nonetheless, students committed to lifelong learning and the challenge of applying both the analytical tools of science and the art of emotional support to others should find the practice of Oriental medicine a soul-satisfying pursuit. As an increasingly competitive health care delivery system focuses on primary care and greater patient satisfaction, it is equally essential that a clinical training program include an emphasis on the humanistic and social dimensions of medicine. Medical education at the Midwest College prepares the graduate to realistically meet both the opportunities and the challenges of the future, whatever his or her eventual career path may be. The fundamental principles of Oriental medicine are covered in increasing complexity throughout the program. This rigorous academic education is then put to use in a wide range of carefully supervised clinical internships that offer experience in all aspects of the practice of Acupuncture and Chinese herbs. At the Midwest College, we believe that the best training for a career in Acupuncture or Oriental Medicine, whether in clinical practice, teaching, or research, encourages the student to develop an independent, critical and inquiring approach to the field. Instruction at the Midwest College is designed to foster such an approach and to encourage students to engage in investigative work, as well as, formal course work and clinical practice.

An Overview of Oriental Medicine
Philosophy
Treatment

Conditions Treated

Risk Factors

Philosophy "Chinese Medicine," also called "Oriental Medicine," "Acupuncture Medicine," "Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)," and "Traditional Oriental Medicine, (TOM)" encompasses an array of medical practices based upon millennia of observational studies and trial-and-error approaches to treating human conditions. What primarily differentiates TOM from "Western Medicine" is that it accepts the possibility that vital energy (chi or qi) circulates through specific pathways, which, in turn, connect to bodily organs. The organs, in turn perform the physiological functions which Western Medicine is familiar with. The rest of TOM is much the same as modern western medicine minus major surgical intervention. In TOM, illness is attributed to, or defined as, an interruption of qi or blood in the pathways, or an imbalance between the yin and yang aspects of the organs. Ancient practices, such as acupuncture, massage, herbology, exercise, and breathing techniques are utilized to restore the normal flow of qi in the pathways, and to harmonize the yin and yang of the organs. One should not be so baffled by these foreign terms as to take them to mean that they conflict with or do not integrate well with western medical science.

MERCY COLLEGE
The Graduate Program In Acupuncture And Oriental Medicine
Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is the identification of disease by the methods of traditional Chinese medicine and the treatment of the diseases. Acupuncture includes the insertion of stainless steel needles into points on the surface of the body, and can include the use of low frequency electrical stimulation. In addition Acupuncture includes the ancient practice of moxibustion (burning the floss or herbs applied to the skin), placement of needles in the external ear (auriculotherapy): and acupressure (use of manual pressure). The full scope of practice of Oriental Medicine includes the use of complex herbal formulae in the treatment of illness. Health and wellness are maintained by dietary and lifestyle guidance, which helps to establish the balance and natural flow of vital energies. The Master of professional Studies in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Mercy College is a full time, three calendar year professional education program designed to confer a simultaneous Bachelor of Science in Herbal Sciences and MPS Degree. The program is completed in nine consecutive trimesters of 15 weeks each. The program is conducted in small classes in an intimate setting. Enrollment goals are currently limited to one class of 35 students to be admitted annually. The program trains professionals who are skilled in the practice of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine well grounded in the body of knowledge and theory which support the practice; and consciously aware of the healing potential and role of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine practice. In addition, the program prepares Acupunturists who are able to work in complementary, collaborative relationships with other health practitioners.
