Panic Disorder
Ongoing research has increased the knowledge and understanding of this Disorder and is clearly evident in the current version of the DSM...No-4. In the DSM-111 and the DSM-111R no distinction was made in the different types of panic attacks. A panic attack was a panic attack. DSM 4 recognises three different types of panic attacks.
  • uncued (spontaneous) panic attacks
  • cued (specific) panic attacks
  • situationally predisposed panic attacks
Spontaneous panic attacks relate to panic disorder Specific panic attacks relate to social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and post traumatic stress disorder. Situationally predisposed panic attacks may occur on exposure to the situational cue or trigger, but do not necessarily occur immediately after the exposure. The symptoms of a panic attack are described in the DSM-4 as a "discrete period of intense fear or discomfort in which four (or more) of the above symptoms develop abruptly and reached a peak within ten minutes. P anic disorder is a common and treatable disorder. Children and adolescents with panic disorder have unexpected and repeated periods of intense fear or discomfort, along with other symptoms such as a racing heartbeat or feeling short of breath. These periods are called "panic attacks" and last minutes to hours. Panic attacks frequently develop without warning. Symptoms of a panic attack include:
  • Intense fearfulness (a sense that something terrible is happening); Racing or pounding heartbeat; Dizziness or lightheadedness; Shortness of breath or a feeling of smothering; Trembling or shaking; Sense of unreality; Fear of dying, losing control, or going crazy.
More than 3 million Americans will experience panic disorder during their lifetime. Panic disorder often begins during adolescence, although it may start during childhood, and sometimes runs in families. If not recognized and treated, panic disorder and its complications can be devastating. Panic attacks can interfere with a child's or adolescent's relationships, schoolwork, and normal development. Children and adolescents with panic disorder may begin to feel anxious most of the time, even when they are not having panic attacks. Some begin to avoid situations where they fear a panic attack may occur, or situations where help may not be available. For example, a child may be reluctant to go to school or be separated from his or her parents.

Anxiety, emotional state in which people feel uneasy, apprehensive, or fearful. People usually experience anxiety about events they cannot control or predict, or about events that seem threatening or dangerous. For example, students taking an important test may feel anxious because they cannot predict the test questions or feel certain of a good grade. People often use the words fear and anxiety to describe the same thing. Fear also describes a reaction to immediate danger characterized by a strong desire to escape the situation.
The physical symptoms of anxiety reflect a chronic “readiness” to deal with some future threat. These symptoms may include fidgeting, muscle tension, sleeping problems, and headaches. Higher levels of anxiety may produce such symptoms as rapid heartbeat, sweating, increased blood pressure, nausea, and dizziness. Treating Panic Disorder Can Head Off Disability and Workers' Comp Claims
by Shirley Babior, LCSW, CEAP
Contents: Introduction
"My first panic attack came out of nowhere and hit me at work one day. I got up right away and went outside for some fresh air. I felt better so I went back in. The next day, I had two or three attacks at work. The third day I didn't want to go back." Panic attacks along with other anxiety disorders are the most common of all mental health problems and can arise in a number of ways. Research indicates the presence of an underlying biological vulnerability in afflicted people. In the presence of stress, these people become afraid, seek to avoid a situation or emotion perceived as threatening, have catastrophic thoughts, and may eventually develop pronounced avoidance behavior and physical symptoms as well as associated depression. Stress in the workplace can bring on or aggravate a panic disorder. Even if stressors outside of work are involved, an employee's performance can decline because he or she fears being embarrassed by having an attack at work. The Symptoms of a Panic Disorder
Individuals suffering panic attacks may go to great lengths to hide their symptoms because they fear ridicule. Symptoms include heart palpitations, dizziness, tingling in the hands or feet, chest pain or discomfort, feelings of unreality or disorientation, sweating, faintness, trembling or shortness of breath and stomach distress. Employees may be concerned about these symptoms, fearing medical problems such as heart attacks. Eventually, the employee may want to flee the work place to go to an emergency room or escape to a safer location.
