Population problems are among the most serious challenges to human destiny for the twenty-first century. The developed and developing countries are facing contrasting population problems. While developed countries are experiencing below replacement level fertility, developing countries are still grappling with reducing fertility. This has implications for environment, employment, work and family, health, population distribution, urbanisation, migration, old age security and refugee movement. It is thus important that integrated approaches to population and economic problems be advanced by population research, and that policy makers and planners pay serious attention to population trends, their causes and their implications. The Waikato graduate programme in Demography is administered by the Department of Sociology and Social Policy. This programme emphasises an integrated approach to population studies in a interdisciplinary context. Students have opportunities to work on individual directed studies and to undertake research for a Masters or higher degree on a population-related subject. The programme is of interest to graduates who seek careers in research, teaching, policy-making, administration and evaluation in central, regional or local government service, in international and community organisations and in the private sector.

THIRD YEAR TI 319 Population Geography
    Dr Seamus Grimes
    5 ECTS
    Course Objectives
The objectives of this course include gaining an understanding of the significance of the demographic factor in social change and of its complexity, of the interrelationships between mortality, fertility and migration in population change and developing a critical perspective on how we deal with population issues.
Among the key issues of demographic change which we will examine will be ideological influences on population policy especially in relation to poor countries, Malthusian and neo-malthusian perspectives on population, and below-replacement fertility. The emphasis will be on the relationship between population and development and we will focus to some extent on the less developed regions of the world which account for an increasing proportion of the world's population. In the section on immigration policy we will examine the postwar experience of Australia.
