Audit on Population Studies Training at South African Universities
INTRODUCTION
In 1997 the Centre for Science Development (CSD) of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) conducted an audit of Population Studies/Demography at South African universities in order to identify programmes in this field and develop appropriate support mechanisms for those enrolled in such programmes. The following information emerged. However, despite the increase in the number of blacks being trained, the few qualified demographers in the country are still almost exclusively white Afrikaners. Although some universities offer Population Studies modules in Social Sciences departments, these are shaped around the institutional requirements and standards of the particular universities. Needless to say, these students do not become qualified demographers.
METHODOLOGY
The auditing was done in the following manner: Information on Population Studies/Demography training was requested from Registrars (Academic) of the 21 universities in the country. The registrars were chosen as information bases because the curricula of all university departments are at their disposal. Letters requesting relevant information were duly sent to them. The letters were then referred to the relevant departments by the registrars' offices. Issues investigated

Beautiful Myanmar MANDALAY - by Rudyard Kipling..........By the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' lazy at the sea, There's a Burma girl a-settin', and I know she thinks o' me; For the wind is in the palm-trees, and the Temple-bells they say: "Come you back, you British soldier; come you back to Mandalay!" Come you back to Mandalay, Where the old Flotilla lay: Can't you 'ear their paddles chunkin' from Rangoon to Mandalay? Yangon Myanmar is well known as a land with glittering golden pagodas and teeming white-washed stupas. The Country is unique in so far it has managed to preserve its beautiful natural environment, traditional customs and ancient cultural heritage unlike so many countries where concrete has been the order of the day. The British called the country Burma, presumably after the majority race the Bamar, but the name Myanmar was the official name of the country since at least the time of Marco Polo. Myanmar again became the official name in 1989 although some still use the colonial name Burma.

Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda As it is mainly in the Tropical Region, Myanmar has a tropical monsoon climate with three seasons: the hot season from mid-February to mid-May, the rainy season from mid-May to mid-October and the cool season from mid-October to mid-February. Annual rainfall varies from 500cm in the coastal regions to 75 cm and less in the central dry zone. Mean temperature ranges are from 32°C in the coastal and delta areas to 21°C in the Northern lowlands.

Graduate Training Program
The University of Colorado at Boulder provides opportunities for interdisciplinary study of population processes and issues in its interdepartmental graduate program in demography. The program is offered through the Departments of Economics Geography , and Sociology . Students are prepared for a wide variety of professional, academic, and research roles in public and private organizations concerned with population issues and problems at the international, national, regional, state, and local levels. The interdepartmental graduate training program is distinguished by its interdisciplinary character, its focus on policy analysis, and its emphasis on research training through direct faculty-student interaction in research projects being carried out within the Population Program, which provides financial support, office space, and on-the-job training. Students work under the close supervision of a faculty member and develop both substantive knowledge and research skills relevant to their areas of specialization. The graduate students form the backbone of the Population Program, through their own research, their participation in faculty research, and their graduate studies. The Program provides students an early opportunity to carry out research in their fields of interest while still attending classes, to receive compensation, and to work closely with faculty who share their interests.

    Demography
I N 1999 THE EARTH'S POPULATION SURPASSED SIX BILLION PEOPLE. It took all of human history to reach the first billion in the 1800s, but approximately 200 years to hit six billion.
As the Earth gets more and more crowded, studying population issues such as the distribution of our natural resources and our collective impact on the environment will be crucial.
Demography, the study of human populations, is also increasingly important in both the business and political sectors. Everything from urban planning to the marketing of a new products uses population information.
This month we explore the field of demography. Online resources:
    • 6 Billion Human Beings - population issues from birth to death are presented in a multimedia experience www.popexpo.net/eMain.html
