12-17 January 2003
Second Circular
The Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry has become one of the most important annual meetings for the discussion of the state-of-the-art and new developments in all aspects of plasma spectrochemistry. Since 1983 the conference alternates between the USA and Europe. After the 2001 Conference in Lillehammer, Norway, and the 2002 Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, the 2003 European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry will take place in the Congress Hall of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, from January 12 to 17.
Fundamentals, instrumental developments with plasma sources and different applications will be presented in lecture and poster sessions. A five day exhibition of spectrometric instrumentation and correlated accessories as well as a Vendors Workshop will also be organized. The first European Award for Plasma Spectrochemistry will be presented in the opening ceremony.

ISAS - A General Summary
The Institute of Spectrochemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, with sections in Dortmund and Berlin, is a scientific research establishment of the so-called "Blaue Liste" or "blue list" and, as such, is supported by the together with the (Dortmund section) and the Since its founding in 1952, ISAS has worked in the area of analytical spectroscopy, its work being directed mainly towards user orientated basic research. ISAS has carried out its research work and earned a great international reputation through an internal interdisciplinary cooperation between physicists and chemists and an external one with engineers, biologists and medics. ISAS has used its expertise to develop new methods and improve existing ones. To solve difficult analytical problems various methods have been combined, according to need (the so-called multi-method concept). Over the last few years, ISAS has orientated its science in a new direction. After the report from the federal scientific council (Wissenschaftsrat) in January 2001, ISAS has focussed its work on essential areas and sharpened its profile. The aims of the institute are summarised in a "mission statement": ISAS works on solving analytical problems. For this it develops new or improves existing measurement principles, measurement techniques, analytical techniques, methods and instruments. Spectroscopical methods and the analytical contribution for solving problems in the areas of material and life sciences are the priority of the research and development at ISAS.

Welcome! Research in the Laboratory for Plasma Spectrochemistry, Laser Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry includes fundamental studies of plasmas used for elemental analysis, aerosol generation and processing, development of new techniques for elemental speciation and application of analytical measurement techniques to environmental and geological problems. On-going experiments range from laser induced fluorescence image detection of individual clouds of atoms and ions produced from a single drop of solution (an atom cloud is shown to the left), to investigation of electrospray and ion spray processes that lead to sampling of intact ions from solutions, to measurement of metal-ligand complexation systems that are important in metal pollutant transport and remediation. We'll be putting some of our latest, most exciting results (including some beautiful images and later, movies), software and useful links to other interesting information on this page, so visit us often.

Nordic Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry June 6-9, 2004, Loen, Norway The Analytical Section of the Norwegian Chemical Society invites scientists and users of science to this second Nordic Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry. The Organising Committee cordially invites you to attend this conference and to contribute to the programme. We sincerely hope that you will respond positively to this invitation and call for papers. Please inform your colleagues about this opportunity to share and discuss their recent experiences and to be scientifically updated through a number of short courses given by international leading specialists in typical Norwegian informal surroundings. We look forward to your attendance at and participation in this scientific event. Objectives and Main Topics This regional Nordic Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry features both invited and submitted contributions on the developments in fundamental aspects of and the applications of plasma spectrochemistry as well as short courses implemented in the conference. Consequently, we have invited our prominent international speakers to contribute to the conference with a 30 minute plenary contribution on his/her favourite topic and a short course. By contrast to other plasma spectrochemistry meetings, the short courses will be offered to all participants during the four day meeting which may be very attractive to participants to learn about and to be updated on plasma spectrochemistry. We are planning to organise 10-12 short courses, two or three in parallel each day , as part of the conference. This new consept is ment to stimulate nordic users of plasma based techniques to learn more about theoretical and practical issues as well as obtain specialists recommendations for methods improvements. Thus these short courses are also a unique opportunity for laboratory engineers to be updated.

1997 EUROPEAN WINTER CONFERENCE ON PLASMA SPECTROCHEMISTRY Gent, Belgium, 12-17 January 1997 Since 1980 the Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry has been organized biennially in the USA, and since 1983 has become an annual event which alternates between the USA and Europe. It has acquired an international reputation as the world's premier meeting covering state-of-the-art developments in all aspects of plasma spectrochemistry. The 1997 conference to be held in Gent (Ghent), Belgium will feature developments in plasma spectrochemical analysis by inductively coupled plasma (ICP), dc plasma (DCP), microwave induced plasma (MIP) and glow discharge (GD) sources coupled to atomic emission or mass spectrometers. In addition current trends and future directions in novel sample introduction systems, plasma system automation, and software for data handling will be discussed by recognised world authorities, with emphasis on elemental speciation studies, high resolution ICP-mass spectrometry, accuracy of the results, quality assurance and industrial applications. The meeting will comprise oral and poster presentations, short courses and a five day exhibition of spectroscopic instrumentation and accessories. The conference will be held in the centre of the historic city of Gent and is organized by the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry of the University of Gent.
