Ever since I was a child, I've been fascinated with 3-D photography. As a teen, I remember going to antique stores and searching out old stereoscopes to view Matthew Brady Civil War shots or old city photos. Then I ran across a true 3-D camera at a Discovery Store in a local mall and took my very first 3-D shots. After that, I was hooked. Soon, I was experimenting with Internet software that would take my photos and translate them into anaglyph images people could view online. And that's what I present below. These photos were taken with the somewhat toyish camera I bought from the Discovery Store. (The store no longer sells them.) I'm now looking into buying a much more professional camera to create even better images. To view these images, you'll need a special pair of red/blue glasses.

http://www.sue-davis.net/e23d/history.html
history of 3-d photography and anaglyphs
The idea of stereoscopy actually preceded photography. As early as 1584, Leonardo da Vinci, one of the great scientific artists, studied the perception of depth. Stereoscopic photography Stereoscopic, or 3-D photography, works because it is able to recreate the illusion of depth. Human eyes are set about two-and-a-half inches apart, so each eye sees an image slightly differently. If you take two separate photographs that same distance apart, with a suitable viewer it is possible to recreate that illusion of depth.
There is some dispute in 3-d circles whether the concept was invented by Sir Charles Wheatstone who, in June 1838, gave an address to the Royal Scottish Society of Arts on the phenomena of binocularvision. He made geometric 3-D drawings and a device to view them called a reflecting mirror stereoscrope. (This is preserved at the Science Museum in London.)
Almost twelve years later, a Scottish scientist named Sir David Brewster invented the first practical photographic device called the lenticular stereoscrope.
Early workers in this field include Fenton, who took photographs in Russia, when he visited there in 1852, and Jules Duboscq, who made stereoscopes and stereoscopic daguerreotypes. Duboscq in turn caused Antoine Claudet to become interested in stereoscopy; Claudet patented stereoscopes in 1853.

When his demonstration goes awry, the Professor enlists the services of his wisecracking assistant, a flying robot named Max, to entertain and educate the audience about the wonders of 3-D. To explain the history of 3-D technology, Max takes the audience on a magical journey through time, from early cave drawings and hieroglyphics to the discovery of perspective by Renaissance artists of the 16 th century.
Moviegoers learn that it was not until the invention of the world's first stereoscopic viewer in 1838 that true 3-D was born. During the turn of the century when 3-D viewing devices and cameras were commonplace, stereographic photography experienced its "Golden Age." "L'Arrivee du Train," one of the first motion pictures ever made, was shot in 3-D by the Lumiere Brothers in France in 1903. The film appeared to be a little too realistic for French audiences; many filmgoers fled the theater screaming as a locomotive seemingly burst through the screen in a cloud of smoke and into the theater!
In the 1950s, Hollywood discovered that 3-D meant Dollars, Dollars, Dollars! Even the campiest "B" movies filmed in 3-D made significant profits. A barrage of 3-D movies ensued, at a rate of about 30 per year. But within two years another cinematic invention had gripped the movie industry - Widescreen Cinemascope. 3-D was suddenly history.
