A very warm welcome to Stereoscopy.com - The World of 3D-Imaging , your one stop information source about the fascinating world of 3D ("stereoscopic") imaging, catering for 3D-aficionados around the world.
3D and Stereoscopy - aren't those the same?
Perspective is often confused with 3D, which is not quite true, because the third dimension (Depth) is only "simulated". Therefore, 2 1/2-D would be a more appropriate expression. Stereoscopic imaging (or "real 3D"), however, requires a minimum of two pictures, simulating our two eyes. This can either be accomplished by using traditional photography (stereo photography), computers (for example Virtual Reality) or Lasers (Holography).
Stereoscopy.com provides some necessary information about stereoscopic imaging for both amateurs and professionals. You have never tried to create 3-D pictures? No problem: we show you how to get started! You are looking for 3-D equipment, literature or services? Our partners offer what you need! "REAL" 3-D MAKES A COMEBACK
by
Brian David Phillips
Parts of this essay first appeared in an article titled "3D Snapshots: Amateur Photogs Discover Joy of Stereo Photography" in the Prime Time section of the China Post , Taipei, Taiwan, Friday, 15 August 1997, pp. 17-18. Well Summer is most certainly well upon us, with it's bright sunny days and hot weather. Not a few folks in Taiwan will be braving that heat to go on outings and excursions. Many of these brave holidayers will be taking photographs to remember their travels by. Some of these photogs will even be producing 3D snapshots of their Summer holidays. In fact, 3D photography is becoming more and more popular among Taiwan's amateur photographers. The Stereo Society Taipei SST , Taiwan's premiere 3D photography club) has over a hundred members and is still growing. Most of us received our first exposure to 3D photography through the View Master children's toys . . . the viewers that allow the operator to view images on a cardboard wheel in such a way that they

STEREO (3-D) PHOTOGRAPHY Between 1952 and 1953 my family lived in New York City. This was the peak of the 50's "stereo craze" where Hollywood was cranking out 3-D movies, camera stores had a variety of stereo cameras to satisfy market demand, and every news-stand carried a wide range of 3-D comic books. I was fascinated by stereo photography, but a young fellow in the 6th and 7th grade can hardly afford quality camera gear. I do remember haunting all the local camera shops, lusting after cameras I couldn't afford! I must have been a real pest, but I remember being treated very well in all those shops, probably because I showed real interest in the subject and had done my homework. Our family had a Stereoscope (Holmes) viewer and I did have a Kodak Brownie camera that took 127 roll film. I am quite proud of the fact that I figured out, on my own, that I could take stereo pictures with that camera by shifting the camera between shots. I happily shot stereo with this improvised "system" - mostly black and white (due to financial constraints), but once I did get carried away and shot a roll of early Kodacolor print film. Much later in life I got a used TDC Colorist stereo camera and the matching projector, but by then the craze was over and it got harder and harder to get film processed and mounted. Now, almost 50 years after my first experiments, you might think that stereo photography was just a historical curiosity, but you would be wrong. Individual stereo enthusiasts and stereo clubs in the larger metropolitan areas have kept the flame alive and now we have computers, digital cameras, and the Internet and new opportunities for stereo photography abound! I have set up this web-site to provide a number of useful functions:

Fun with stereographic photography
posted January 27, 2003 at 12:43 pm ET
Stereographic photography (or stereo photography for short) involves taking two slightly different pictures of the same scene so that viewing them in a certain way produces a 3-dimensional image. Having seen some examples of stereo photos recently, I decided to do some research and experiment by making some of my own To view the images in 3-D, cross your eyes until a composite image forms in the middle (it even works with the thumbnail above). From what I've read, a small percentage of you (5-10%) won't be able to see the effect, so if you can't get it to work, that might be why. Stereo photography turns out to be fairly easy to do if you're not concerned with exact results, even if you only have one camera. Choose an appropriate scene and photograph it from two different positions a small distance apart, making sure to keep the camera as horizontal as possible. That distance depends on distance between the camera and the scene, but for most pictures, an inch or two of separation between camera positions is sufficient. For the Lisa Simpson image, the figurines were about two feet away and I moved the camera only about an inch between shots. Make sure you keep track of which photo you took from the left side and which you took from the right. That'll be important when preparing the images for viewing. When preparing the images for viewing, tall images seem to work better than wide images in getting the proper 3-D effect. Keep image sizes small; if the images get too wide, you won't be able to cross your eyes enough to see the effect. To view the images, place them side-by-side on the screen or print them out, placing the photo you took from the right side on the left and the photo you took from the left side on the right (if you don't switch the photos, you'll get a strange inverse 3-D effect). Then cross your eyes until a composite image appears in the middle.

Stereo Photography, 3-D Images A stereoscope is recommended to view the images in three dimensions. Cross eyed viewing works for some people, but a stereoscope works much better. A resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, and 16,777,216 colors (24 bit color) works best for most monitors.

Our 3d models will solve the limitations of still photography, particularlyby offering a more vivid spatial sense of the cave-shrines.
http://court.it-services.nwu.edu/dunhuang/Merit/3-d.html
3-D Imaging Creating 3-D models requires many hours of careful image processing and modeling from high quality photography and cave geometry. Our current prototypes demonstrate the potential, but are limited by available photography and architectural drawings. Rectilinear photography of the cave surfaces and accurate cave geometry is needed for high quality models. Technical staff are working with researchers in planning extensive on-site photography for both surface imagery and photogrammetric analysis. Once the appropriate photography is obtained, significant image processing and object modeling hours will be invested to finish each 3-D model.
The 3-D Modeling Process
These photographs show the east wall of cave 196. Because these were not shot perpendicular to their surface, they first require parallax correction. They are then scaled and stitched into a single texture. The stitched texture is then ready for mapping onto its surface of the 3-D model. This example also demonstrates the need for consistent lighting during photography in order to avoid having to perform excessive color correction during texture assembly. The geometry data for these 3-D models was developed from architectural drawings of the cave, then iteratively refined in a modeler with line and surface information obtained from the photographs. We are currently experimenting with photogrammetry software to aid in the development of accurate geometry information for the models. Once the model is created, the image textures are mapped to their appropriate surfaces.
