Instructions for making stereographs

3-D VIEWMAX, Ben Lomon, California, USA
Materials Required: a disposable camera and an inexpensive stereo-viewer.
Activity Time: open
Concepts Taught: Teaching students how to photograph subjects in stereo-3-D using a single camera.
Instructions for making stereo pairs with a single camera-
By Ron Keas/ stereo photographer for 3-D VIEWMAX "These instructions are for making stereographs from two 3x5 inch photographs.
Introduction: A 3-Dimensional ("stereoscopic") photograph is made from two slightly different
views of the same scene. These two views are fused together by the 3-D VIEWMAX stereo-viewer. Your camera has only ONE eye, so your pictures appear flat, with only the two dimensions of height and width. The 3-D VIEWMAX instructions will teach you how to give your camera TWO eyes. With two eyes, your camera sees what you see, and when the resulting two

Remember to allow for top and bottom cropping when shooting with a "Realist" format camera. The Realist format is vertical.
REALIST FORMAT FILM STRIP SAMPLE
REALIST CROPPING SAMPLE/35mm CROPPING SAMPLE
When using Verascope or Belplasca, allow for cropping on the sides.
Twin 35mm stereo slides can also be used with various cropping options
(A "flat" or non 3-D 35mm slide can also be used however, it will not have any of the depth or dimension of 3-D slides.)
STEREO CAMERAS
STEREO REALIST f2.8
A rangerfinder type camera ideally suited for photographing movie and television assignments. Shutter must be cocked separately from film advance. Camera mechanism is very dependable. Format is vertical. Don't fill frame too tight, top and bottom. VERASCOPE F40 An excellent camera to photograph scenics and scenic attractions. Accepts wide angle conversion lenses. Shutter cocks when film advanced. (Format similar to Belplasca)

A Technique for Studying 3-D Artifacts: A Poor Man's Stereo-Micro-Photography
by Philip L. Lord, Jr.
Many of us, in the course of our research, have had an opportunity to study objects in the collections of other museums or archives. Often our time is limited and it is frustrating to try and capture all the details of the item for later reference in the time we have. If only there were some way to borrow the items for study back home. For 2-D materials we can make photocopies, order photostats, or sometimes take our own detailed photographs on the spot. But for 3-D items, particularly very small ones such as coins and military buttons, photographs end up a very poor substitute for firsthand inspection. Many years ago, I observed Bob Dineen, a former member of the State Museum's geology staff, using a novel technique for capturing 3-D field photographs of geologic features without the expense and complexity of a 3-D camera. He would take one shot of the feature, advance the film, take four or five steps to the side, and shoot again. The resulting prints would later be viewed under a device for viewing stereo air photograph pairs; thus recreating the original 3-D field reality. Later I adapted this same technique to the photography of some very tiny historical landscapes - wax seals on documents - thus solving one of the difficulties of trying to study three dimensional artifacts where time and access is limited.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR 3D PHOTOGRAPHY
We can work with almost any image, subject or set, though
for the best possible quality, the following guidelines
should be adhered to.
1. Three dimensional and animated photographs should be taken at
our facility with our special 8"x10" or 20" x 24" lenticular
cameras. It is possible, however to work with images from
conventional stereo cameras cameras and computer generated
images.
2. It is advisable to provide a rough sketch or a photograph of the subject to be taken in 3D for our recommendation and guid- ance.

These 10' x 20' muslins are stretched and painted with eye-catching design elements that merge into the background itself, producing a seamless image that surrounds the couple. All our schools are requesting our 3-D backgrounds now, and we are continually adding to our bulging inventory. We have as many as 8 copies of each 3-D Background so that larger schools with multiple set-ups can be accommodated. No Props Needed.

Ioannis Stamos - Assistant Professor
Hunter College the Graduate Center of CUNY
istamos@hunter.cuny.edu http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/cs/Faculty/Stamos
Overview
The class will be based on presentations of recent papers, an introduction to the Open Inventor 3D graphics libraries, and a final group project. You will be able to use the last generation in range sensing technology ( Cyrax 3D laser scanning system ) and highness digital color cameras that have been acquired by the Vision and Graphics Lab of the Computer Science Department of Hunter College. The range scanner can provide dense 3D measurements (1000x1000 3D points at a resolution of 6 mm) of outdoor and indoor environments, while the digital cameras color photographs of high accuracy (5.47 Megapixels SLR cameras). This class is an introduction to the research carried out by the Vision and Graphics Lab of Hunter College.
Course Format There will be a weekly class, with lectures by Professor Stamos and assigned papers to be presented by class members. The grade will be based upon the following: 20% for 1-2 short programming assignments, 20% for each student's paper presentation, 50% for group projects and 10% for class participation.
Prerequisites Students need to be familiar with at least one of the following topics: Image/Pixel Processing, Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Robotics, or Computer Aided Design. A prerequisite can be waived by permission of the instructor.

95. Stereo Photography- The World In 3D
3D photography has been around for a century and a half. It is simplya method of photographically recreating what you already do
http://www.3dphoto.net/stereo/stereo.html
Established 1996. Continuing through the end of 2002, this site may experience somewhat slower-than-normal downloads. The site has been temporarily relocated while my host's site is physically moving to another building. Hopefully by the end of the year, everything should be back to normal. In the meantime, you may have to wait a little longer for the images to load. It's actually not too bad, and if you are on a dialup connection, you won't be able to tell the difference. 3D Photography
has been around for a century and a half. It is simply a method of photographically recreating what you already do- perceive depth in everything you see. Standard photographs are only 2-dimensional representations of what you see. 3-Dimensional photographs are taken from two perspectives (you have two eyes, hence two perspectives on a scene). By forcing each eye to see only one photograph, i.e. the left eye sees the left photograph and the right eye sees the right photograph, your brain will reconstruct the depth information from the two pictures and you will see a 3D image. There are various ways of doing this, and this site is meant to give a demonstration of several forms of viewing them.
