UK government information on industry for digital television and interactive Services.

Introduction
Oftel is involved in the economic regulation of certain aspects of broadcasting in the UK. This responsibility began with the regulation of terrestrial broadcast transmission through licences granted under the Telecommunications Act 1984. The onset of digital technology has, however, created a new set of challenges and responsibilities for Oftel. "Convergence" - the process by which the same content can be transmitted over different mediums - has meant that the world of telecommunications and television are growing ever closer, particularly in the area of digital interactive services. It will therefore be possible for the consumer to access a variety of digital services over terrestrial broadcast, satellite, cable or even new higher bandwidth telephony products such as ADSL, which allows broadcast content over the telephone network.
What does Oftel regulate?

Issue 42 Television Sportscasters (Male)
This issue looks at the career paths of five male television sportscasters ones who followed a journalism path rather than a competitive sports career path. (I will look at female sportscasters in the next issue.)
  • Joe Buck is a skilled sportscaster who also benefited by having the right family connections. His father, Jack Buck, called St. Louis Cardinals baseball for years and was elected to the broadcaster's wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He also did Monday Night Football play-by-play on CBS radio for 16 years.
In 1989, while Joe Buck was attending Indiana University, he began doing play-by-play for the Louisville Redbirds, a Cardinals minor league affiliate. "I sent my tape to Anheuser-Busch [owner of the Cardinals] and they saw the novelty of my being Jack Buck's kid." (1) He was also a reporter for ESPN's coverage of minor league baseball's Triple-A All-Star Game. In 1991 Buck graduated with a degree in English and a minor in telecommunications. He became a radio and television announcer for the Cardinals. In 1992 he also became the voice of the University of Missouri basketball team. In 1993 he was announcing Major League Baseball for CBS Radio and calling play-by-play for Missouri baseball on Prime Network. In addition, he was a sports reporter for the local CBS affiliate, did Grand Prix Horse Jumping play-by-play for ESPN, and was a host of a radio talk show.
