48. Residency Training
the Virginia Mason Hospital, Children's Hospital and Medical Center, and Harborviewwhere they gain extensive experience in general urology, pediatric urology
http://depts.washington.edu/uroweb/residency.htm
Resident applicants - please click here Residency Training Introduction Urologic surgery is a very diversified and rapidly changing specialty. Urologists treat male and female patients of all ages with a great variety of congenital and acquired diseases. They have to master many imaging, urodynamic, and laboratory techniques and be skilled in endoscopic and open surgery. In order to be competent in all aspects of this specialty, we believe that a six year program is essential. The department has a strong commitment to basic and clinical research, and all residents have approximately twelve months of research or elective time in the six years (usually the PGY 4 year). Interested residents are encouraged to spend up to two additional years learning basic and applied research skills. Therefore, our graduates are well qualified to enter private practice or start on an academic career. Clinical Training Program The program is six years in length: one and a half in general surgery, and four and a half in urology. General surgery years are taken at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals, where the resident receives extensive experience in patient care, as well as an opportunity to participate in open surgeries. The PGY1 year is straight general surgery. As a PGY2, the resident spends six months on general surgery and six months on urology (three months at the VA and three months at the UWMC). In the first full urology year (PGY3), residents rotate between the University of Washington Medical Center, Children's Hospital and Medical Center, Harborview and the VA Medical Center and learn basic urologic diagnostic and therapeutic techniques under the supervision of the Chief Residents and the full time academic staff.

Information for Referring Providers
How to Make a Referral to the Urology Clinic
The Urology Clinic at University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) offers specialized urology care to patients from all over the Northwest and has received national recognition. Among our doctors' areas of expertise are prostatitis; male infertility; bladder, kidney and prostate cancer; and ureteral strictures. There is also a special clinic for female urology, an area of practice which often presents some very complex problems. Staffed by women doctors, the clinic specializes in the treatment of complex incontinence and painful bladder syndrome. When appropriate, we advocate first trying non-surgical management for our patients. Medical technology at the Urology Clinic is state-of-the-art. We offer video urodynamics evaluation, specialized electrodiagnostic testing and a complete andrology lab. Percutaneous lithotripsy is available for the treatment of large kidney stones. We also offer laser treatment for genital warts. Any diagnostic tests your patient may need can be performed at the Urology Clinic or elsewhere at UWMC. Specialty Services Our specialty services include: Tumors and Oncology
We receive many referrals for patients with bladder, prostate, kidney and other urologic cancers. Patients with bladder cancer who have had intravesical treatment failures may benefit from experimental protocols available in this clinic. If bladder removal is indicated, we can perform surgery and construct a continent urinary diversion or a neobladder.
