BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... PEOPLE Color CANADA Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada has a land mass of 9 970 610 km2, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones.
Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the population of 30 million live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border, where the climate is milder, in a long thin band stretching between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
Climate: Canada is divided into seven regions, each with a very different landscape and climate.
    1. The Pacific Coast Bathed by warm, moist Pacific air currents, the British Columbia coast, indented by deep fiords and shielded from Pacific storms by Vancouver Island, has the most moderate climate of Canada's regions.
Vancouver Island's west coast receives an exceptional amount of rain, giving it a temperate rain forest climate. Although it does not contain the diversity of species of a tropical rain forest, the island's west coast does have the oldest and tallest trees in Canada: Western Red Cedars 1300 years old and Douglas firs 90 m high.
    2. The Cordillera From British Columbia to just east of the Alberta border the land is young, with rugged mountains and high plateaus. Signs of geologically-recent volcanic activity can be seen in Garibaldi Provincial Park in southern British Columbia and at Mount Edziza in the north.

This ecozone contains the mountainous southern Yukon and northern British Columbia. Climate
The mountains in the west of the Boreal Cordillera stop much of the precipitation that would normally fall, so the region tends towards dryness, with less than 300 mm of precipitation in the west. Precipitation rises to the east, with up to 1500 mm falling on some slopes. From one third to two-thirds of the precipitation falls as snow. Average winter temperatures are -18ºC, while the short summer averages 10ºC. Geology and Geography
Mountains and plateaus are the dominant features, separated by lowlands and valleys. Debris and deposits from glaciers cover the plateaus and valleys, and even the lower slopes of the mountains have deposits. Flora and Fauna
    Plants

Trees grow in the lowlands and on the lower slopes. As elevation increses, trees become stunted and above the treeline only shrubs, moss, lichen and herbs are found. Much of the upper slopes is bare rock, snow and ice. Trees of the area include white spruce black spruce , Engelmann spruce, alpine fir lodgepole pine whitebark pine , trembling aspen, balsam poplar, white birch water birch , scrub birch, and

    3. The Prairies To drive across the Prairies is to see endless fields of wheat ripening under a sky that seems to go on forever. The plains of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are among the richest grain-producing regions in the world. Yet, even here are surprises. If you leave the road at Brooks, Alberta, and drive north, you descend into the Red Deer River Valley. Here, in desert-like conditions, water and wind have created strange shapes in the sandstone called "hoodoos." The same forces of erosion have uncovered some of the largest concentrations of dinosaur fossils in the world.
    4. The Canadian Shield A huge inland sea called Hudson Bay extends into the heart of Canada, and wrapped around this bay is a rocky region called the Canadian Shield. Canada's largest geographical feature, it stretches east to Labrador, south to Kingston on Lake Ontario and northwest as far as the Arctic Ocean. The Shield is considered to be the nucleus of the North American continent. Its gneiss and granite rocks are 3.5 billion years old, three-quarters the age of the Earth. Scraped by the advance and retreat of glaciers, the Shield has only a thin layer of soil that supports a boreal forest of spruce, fir, tamarack and pine. The region is a storehouse of minerals, including gold, silver, zinc, copper and uranium.

One province and two territories incurred population declines of 5% or more between 1996 and 2001. They were Newfoundland and Labrador, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
Newfoundland and Labrador's population experienced its second consecutive census-to-census decline. The census counted 512,930 people in the province, down 7% from the previous census. This was more than twice the 2.9% rate of decline between 1991 and 1996. Newfoundland and Labrador had the strongest net outflow of interprovincial migrants of any province. It also had the nation's lowest fertility rate.
The census counted 28,674 people in the Yukon, down 6.8%, and 37,360 in the Northwest Territories, down 5.8%. Demographic change in the territories is quite volatile because of the small size of their population. Between 1991 and 1996, growth rates in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories were much higher than the Canadian average. However, leading up to the 2001 Census, high net outflows of migration to the rest of Canada contributed to the declines in population.

Lisa Bawtinheimer Adapted Lesson Plan EDTE 412 Neil Smith Life in The Yukon Rationale/Context: This lesson could fall at the beginning or the middle of a unit on the Yukon. Hopefully, the challenge of creating a collage reflecting life in the Yukon will help to develop their critical thinking skills. They will have to make speculations as to how the climate would affect life and make judgments regarding what to include in the collage. This activity is a good one because it integrates art with social studies. That combined with the group work will hopefully make this fun for the students. Learning Outcomes: 1. students will describe how physical environment influences human activities (IRP p32) 2. students will gain an understanding of the environment and climate of the Yukon 3. students will be able to list ways we adapt to fit our surroundings 4. students will make decisions regarding the key ideas of life in the Yukon 5. students will work successfully in a group 6. students will be able to explain their reasoning to the rest of the class
