LEGACY American settlers were renowned among leaders of western agrarian protest. One of the best known American settlers in Canada since Confederation was Henry Wise Wood. Born into a prosperous family with farms in Missouri and Texas, Wood became an expert stockman and was an earnest student of agrarian reform. In 1904 he visited Alberta, heralded then as "the last best West," and purchased a wheat farm near Carstairs. In 1914 he became the director of the United Farmers of Alberta. From then until his death Wood was regarded as one of the most powerful agrarian and political figures in Alberta, preaching the need for a strong, broadly based farm organization so that rural people could offset the growing power of bankers, industrialists and professionals. C.D. Howe was also an American settler who initially made his mark in agriculture. From 1915 to 1935, Howe became the leading grain-elevator builder of his time. His business crumpled in the Depression. In 1935 he entered politics and Parliament as a Liberal and became a member of Mackenzie King's Cabinet. In Parliament, Howe served as Minister of Transport and helped create Trans-Canada Airlines, later to become Air Canada. In 1940 he became Minister of Munitions and was responsible for Canada's war-production program. In 1944 he took over the new Department of Reconstruction, reconverting the Canadian economy to a free-enterprise system. In 1956 he sponsored the trans-Canada pipeline with government aid to a private firm.

Several trading posts were built on the Yukon River, and before long prospectors began to search for treasure. The Canadian government acquired the Yukon from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1870 and administered it as part of the Northwest Territories. After the famous gold strikes in the Klondike River region in the 1890s more than 30,000 people pushed across the icy barriers in search of gold. This colorful period was recorded in the writings of Robert Service and Jack London. To meet the need for local government created by the influx of gold prospectors, the Yukon was made a separate district (1895) and then a separate territory (1898) with Dawson as capital. Whitehorse became the capital in 1952. Native land claims and the desire for provincial status are two issues that have dominated territorial politics in recent years. The land claim by the Yukon, a tribe of about 7,000, was approved by the federal government in 1991. The government consists of a federally appointed commissioner, an elected legislative assembly of 14 members, and a 5-member cabinet appointed by the majority party of the assembly. The territory sends one senator and one representative to the national parliament.

Multi-proxy sediment analyses and radiocarbon age dating of sediment cores from deep to shallow water show multiple Holocene lake-level variations. Marcella Lake is an oblong shape with a depth of 10m in the center. The bathymetry is a symmetrical depression on all sides but the southwest, where the lake gradually shallows to 1-m depth and a thick charophyte bed covers a flat submerged bay. Sediment cores were retrieved from the deep (10m), shallow (2m) and intermediate (4.4m) depths and were 480, 380 and 205-cm long, respectively. All cores terminate in a gravel diamicton. Radiocarbon ages from terrestrial and aquatic macrofossils yield basal ages of 10,700 C yr B.P. for the deep core and 8,800
