92. Plant Biotechnology: ZAB Research Projects
Describes the research projects of the AlbertLudwigs-University, Freiburg.
http://zab.uni-freiburg.de/research/plant/introduction/introduction.html
Plant biotechnology is a forward looking research area. The contribution of pure research, to the most part carried out in statutory research institutes, provides the essential basis for goal-oriented applications in modern agriculture. At the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, innovative and competitive pure research in the field of plant biotechnology is taking place in many institutes from widely differing faculties (biology, forestry, chemistry and pharmacy). Exemplary is genome analysis, which forms the basis of the specific improvement of plant growth (e.g. stem rigidity of grass or salt tolerance, increased crop and vitamin enrichment of cereals). The data taken from research into plant architecture can be transferred to the field of mechanical engineering (e.g. composite material in the automobile industry, hollow chamber systems with "plant" mechanisms to withstand higher pressure loads). Our projects Structural and mechanical properties of plants: transfer into technical materials The photoregulation of plant architecture and performance Signal transduction of plant tolerance to stress Functional genomics in plants using highly efficient homologous recombination ... Phytoremediation of heavy metals and pesticides by genetically engineered poplar trees If you are interested in concrete cooperation offers of our members please click here
Responsible for this project area is Prof. Dr. R. Reski

PCAPSS (Protein Classification through the Assessment of Predicted Secondary Structure): A new fold-recognition tool for helping identify hypothetical protein sequences. From a single query protein sequence, it builds a hidden Markov model of predicted secondary structure to search the PDB for proteins of similar structure. [HELP]
    BLAST Filter
: Builds a set of related sequences by running BLAST on your DNA or protein query sequence, filtering the matches through a set of rules, and returning the complete sequences of the BLAST matches that pass all rules. Includes user-defined rules and a graphical display of High Scoring Segment Pairs aligned with the query. Useful in building a sequence set for multiple alignment, phylogeny, and hidden Markov models. [HELP]
    Batch BLAST
: A service provided by SWBIC to the NMSU research community. It runs the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) for many query sequences. The results of these BLASTs may be sorted by the queries that resulted in the most significant matches to database sequences. Graphical alignment of High Scoring Segment Pairs is also provided, as well Genbank links for matched subject sequences. [HELP]
    GraphAlign
: Performs a new type of graphical analysis of global pairwise alignments between a query sequence and multiple subject sequences. It provides new methods for analyzing and visualizing how a query (protein, DNA or RNA) aligns with a set of related sequences.
