The Origin of Species
Introduction to Evolutionary Biology
This essay is a must-read for anyone who wants to participate in talk.origins. It lays out the land for evolutionists and creationists alike, presenting the ideas behind and the evidence for biological evolution.
What is Evolution?
All too often creationists spend their time arguing with a straw-man caricature of evolution. This brief essay presents a definition of evolution that is acceptable to evolutionists.
Evolution is a Fact and a Theory
Biologists consider evolution to be a fact in much the same way that physicists do so for gravity. However, the mechanisms of evolution are less well understood, and it is these mechanisms that are described by several theories of evolution.
The Modern Synthesis of Genetics and Evolution
Darwin developed his theory of natural selection without any knowledge of genetics. Since Darwin, genetics and evolution have been synthesized, and natural selection is no longer considered to be the only evolutionary mechanism.
The Origin of Species
Read the book by Charles Darwin that started it all. The full text of the book is online.

In warm memory of Tero Sand and Bob Schadewald
Talk.origins is a Usenet newsgroup devoted to the discussion and debate of biological and physical origins. Most discussions in the newsgroup center on the creation/evolution controversy, but other topics of discussion include the origin of life, geology, biology, catastrophism, cosmology and theology. The Talk.Origins Archive is a collection of articles and essays, most of which have appeared in talk.origins at one time or another. The primary reason for this archive's existence is to provide mainstream scientific responses to the many frequently asked questions (FAQs) and frequently rebutted assertions that appear in the talk.origins newsgroup.

From the Electronic Universe Project.

Animation of the steps listed below: The HR Diagram Stellar Evolution is driven entirely by the never ending battle between Pressure and Gravity . As imbalances are reached, the star is driven to find a new Energy source. Each new stage in stellar evolution is hence marked by a different energy generation mechansism. These stages are discussed below:
  • Structure of a Main Sequence Star Here see that a main sequence star has a simple structure. Pressure and gravitational forces are equal, the star is stable and its core is sufficiently hot to fuse Hydrogen into Helium . Eventually the core of the main sequence star will become pure Helium and that will mark a new evolutionary phase for the star. > More about main sequence stars
  • Structure of a Post Main Sequence Star Now the star has two chemically distinct zones, a core of Helium surrounded by an envelope of Hydrogen. Since Helium has 2 protons in its nucleus then the fusion of Helium requires a higher temperature, to overcome this electrostatic barrier, than the fusion of Hydrogen. Hence the core of the star is not sufficiently hot for Helium fusion to occur initially. Without a source of core energy generation, the core cannot support itself against gravitational collpase and so it begins to collapse. As it collapses it heats. This heat is then transferred to a thin shell of hydrogen around the core which suddenly finds itself at a temperature in which hydrogen fusion can occur. As the core continues to collpase, the temperature in the hydrogen fusing shell continues to rise and thus the

Go directly to Human Evolution activity
(152K - requires Shockwave When did humans evolve? Who are our ancestors? Why did we evolve? At the turn of the century, scientists could only dream about finding the answers to these questions. The fossilized remains of a species known as Neanderthal had been found, and there was a primitive, human-like skull that had been discovered in Indonesia. Beyond that, there was little hard evidence to work with. With the 1912 "discovery" of the Piltdown Man, the study of human evolution was sent down a wrong track. When the phony Piltdown Man, with its human skull and orangutan's jaw, was finally exposed in 1953, the pieces of the great puzzle began to fall into place. With the experts' opinions no longer skewed, the relationship between the real fossils started to make sense. There have been many discoveries, and much has been learned about the human odyssey over the past few decades. Many questions, however, still remain. This activity shows the major hominid (human or human-like) species discovered to date, when they lived, and how they might be related to each other.

American Megafauna, 2nd Ed.
New Second Edition boxed set, completely redone in color! American Megafauna pits dinosaurs against mammals in ancient America. The game is designed for two to four players, from ages 9 to adult, or can be played solitaire. It recreates the titanic contest of these two types of prehistoric beasts from the Triassic to the present. The contest initially appeared to be won by the dinosaurs, who strutted triumphant for 170 million years, only to be overthrown, in what must be the upset of the eon, by the mammals. Yet the contest is not over. This is a game of ecology, evolution, and DNA. Players start as one of four nondescript archetypes, but can branch out to new species from this basic type by bidding on genotype and DNA cards as they are revealed. For auction "currency," players use gene coins from a "gene pool." DNA cards allow players to create strange animals, from cud-chewing crocodiles with antlers, to saber-tooth meat-eating camels. In the the advanced version, the continent of Laurentia is occasionally flooded or glaciated; greenhouse levels change; and the three Milankovitch cycles are handled by cards that occur with historical probabilities. Biome cards, including cycad prairies, mountains, ice sheets, and mangrove swamps, appear on the map in succession according to "climax" ratings.
