66. The Physiology Of Perception

The Physiology of Perception
By Walter J. Freeman
The brain transforms sensory messages into conscious perceptions almost instantly Chaotic, collective activity involving millions of neurons seems essential for such rapid recognition.
From: February 1991 Scientific American, Vol 264, (2) Pgs. 78-85.
WALTER J. FREEMAN is professor of Neurobiology at the University of California, Berkeley. He received an M.D. from Yale University in 1954 and completed postdoctoral training in neurophysiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, in l959, the year he joined the Berkeley faculty. W hen a person glimpses the face of a famous actor, sniffs a favorite food or hears the voice of a friend, recognition is instant. Within a fraction of a second after the eyes, nose, ears, tongue or skin is stimulated, one knows the object is familiar and whether it is desirable or dangerous. How does such recognition, which psychologists call preattentive perception, happen so accurately and quickly, even when the stimuli are complex and the context in which they arise varies?
Much is known about the way the cerebral cortex, the outer rind of the brain, initially analyzes sensory messages. Yet investigations are only now beginning to suggest how the brain moves beyond the mere extraction of features-how it combines sensory messages with past experience and with expectation to identify both the stimulus and its particular meaning to the individual.

Exercise Physiology
The Methods and Mechanisms Underlying Performance
This page is the jumping off point for an ever-growing section on the physiological basis for endurance performance and training. Many exercise physiologists started out as athletes whose desire for better performance drove them to explore how the human machine worked. You do not need to earn a PhD in the field to benefit as a master's athlete from better knowledge about basic exercise physiology. So, here, I am trying to package a body of material that begins with an overall model, then attempts to flesh out the model. Articles will start with the basics and move towards more detail in a "3D" fashion through the system of hyperlinks. You can read the basic article and quit, or you can link to the "imbedded" articles that probe the question further in some way. At least that is the idea. Just remember, all material is not accessed directly through this page.

Runners, Rowers, Cyclists, Swimmers, Cross Country Skiers, welcome to the MAPP! This is a high content site dedicated to examining and explaining the physiology and training methods of the endurance athlete. This site tends to focus on masters athletes, or those athletes who compete in age group sport. However, the physiology and training information clearly applies to all ages. Stephen Seiler PhD. Who Am I? ""Our bodies are our gardens - our wills are our gardeners" William Shakespeare MORE QUOTES My real job and the limits of my personal benevolence prevents me from spending as much time writing for this site as I might wish. So, while this site is definitely not dead, it is not growing very much these days. I do read all and try to answer most email questions, and post a small selection here, but I can't promise that I will respond to every question. If I don't, it probably means that I got swamped with email and forgot. Try again. Send me a question or comment

Formerly Skin Pharmacology An innovative approach to recent developments In the past decade research into skin pharmacology has developed dramatically with new and promising drugs and therapeutic concepts being introduced regularly. Recent examples include immunosuppressive topicals, and new strategies in the therapy of malignant melanoma and wound healing. New concepts have also been developed in traditional areas of skin therapy and skin care which have led to discussions of issues such as ‘cosmeceuticals’ in the United States, ‘quasi-drugs’ in Japan, and the 6th Amendment of the Cosmetic Regulation in the European Union. There are many open questions which reflect the importance of the subject and the need for a new international scientific forum where they can be discussed in extenso. Dermatologists, pharmaceutical chemists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, and others interested in the subject are invited to contribute to this exciting project and to submit their best research work for publication. 77. Maharishi Vedic Approach To Health, Cosmic Counterparts
In this landmark textbook, Dr Tony Nader, M.D., Ph.D. describes his recent discovery that the structure of human physiology and the structure of the Veda and the ancient Vedic Literature are identical. Dr Nader shows that all physiological components, including DNA and the various parts of the nervous system, match the 37 branches of the Vedic Literature one to one, both in structure and function in the minutest detail.

A TEXTBOOK OF LIFE FOR EVERYONE
Expression of Veda and the Vedic Literature
This landmark textbook by Tony Nader, M.D., Ph.D., describes his recent discovery that the structure of human physiology, as known by modern anatomy, and the structure of the most ancient record of human knowledge, the Vedic Literature, are identical. Dr. Nader shows that all physiological components match the 40 branches of the Vedic Literature, one to one, both in structure and function, in the minutest detail. Dr. Nader's research was guided by profound insights into the ancient Vedic Literature provided by Maharishi. This discovery has brought to light that the human physiology is the expression of the total intelligence of Natural Law. This comprehensive textbook explains how the two great traditions of knowledge, objective and subjectivemodern science and ancient Vedic Scienceuphold one another.
  • Academicians will find that the detailed correlations bring new understandings and insights to physiology and the neurosciences.
  • Researchers will find new directions for scientific investigation.
