In the evening, this bank clerk's custom was to study and write, not just as a pastime, but with a larger aim: to instruct his fellow citizens, old and young, male and female, in the literature of the European past. Paradox marked the life of Thomas Bulfinch, the man I have described above. His hard-working days and rented room contrasted with the elegance of his family's former days. His seeming tameness and propriety masked the boldness of a pioneering thinker about the role of traditional literature in the rapidly changing society of the United States.

MISCUIT UTILE DULCI: BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY AS A PEDAGOGICAL PROTOTYPE
The Age of Fable , better known as Bulfinch's Mythology , written by Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) and first published in 1855, has long been a standard fixture in American homes, schools, and libraries. New editions still appear frequently. The book consists of prose narratives of classical myths, often Bulfinch's own translations, as well as a smattering of nonclassical mythology. Interspersed throughout the text are myth-related quotations from several English and American poets popular among Bulfinch's contemporaries, and, also, various comments by the author. For example, after his artful and accurate translation of Ovid's version of the Pyramus and Thisbe story, Bulfinch quotes lines from two poets, one of whom (Moore) is known today, the other (Mickle) not; refers to Davy's Safety Lamp (an oil lamp used by coal miners), apparently an object familiar to the general public of his time; and finally, in avuncular fashion, directs his younger readers toward Shakespeare. In this case, quoting directly from Bulfinch will best convey the author's mingling of classical and nonclassical elements throughout chapters I-XXXVI of The Age of Fable
Moore, in the Sylph's Ball, speaking of Davy's Safety Lamp, is reminded of the wall that separated Thisbe and her lover:

Imagine yourself in Boston's financial district almost a hundred and fifty years ago. The buildings on State Street are tiny compared with today's skyscrapers. But eastward, at the end of State Street, is the same expanse of water you would see if you walked there today - Boston Harbor - into which sailed decade after decade the merchant ships that had made Boston a great city and State Street a center of trade.
It is the end of a working day, and people are bustling out of the banks and investment houses. If you should turn your gaze toward a building marked by a sign "Merchants' Bank," you would see coming through the door with the other employees (a dozen or so in all) a dignified-looking man with graying sideburns, dressed in a dark suit with high white collar, bow tie, and a gold watch chain strung across his vest. If you kept track of him in the crowd, you would see him trudging westward, away from the harbor and State Street. He would be heading toward his bachelor quarters in a boarding-house in Bowdoin Square (a neighborhood now laid to rest beneath Government Center).

Webmaster's Notes 1. Although a bit outdated as a mythology reference by modern academic standards, Thomas Bulfinch's The Age of Fable Or Stories of Gods and Heroes is the book probably most responsible (followed by Edith Hamilton's Mythology , Robert Graves' The Greek Myths , the works of Joseph Campbell, and the historical fiction of Mary Renault) for popularizing Greek mythology during the past hundred and fifty years. The first two paragraphs of Bulfinch's Introduction to The Age of Fable constitute one of the most effective and poignant arguments for the study of Greek mythology I have ever read. (Incidentally, it is the first two sentences of these two paragraphs that seem to generate the only negative feedback this web site receives, coming in the form of e-mailed complaints from modern neo-pagans who object to Bulfinch's representation of the religions of ancient Greece and Rome as "extinct".) Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) wrote The Age of Fable as a work of popular readable entertainment and its glossing over of detail makes it eminently suitable for hypertext markup of key words for those readers who want to delve further into the fascinating (albeit labyrinthean) world of primary and secondary mythology sources . Many of these World-Wide Web links serve to illustrate the progress made in mythology scholarship, archaeology, and classics interpretation since the original 1855 publication of

Chapters: Chapter 27 - The Trojan War After two years of preparation the Greek fleet and army assembled in the port of Aulis in Boeotia. Here Agamemnon in hunting killed a stag which was sacred to Diana, and the goddess in return visited the army with pestilence, and produced a calm which prevented the ships from leaving the port. Calchas, the soothsayer, thereupon announced that the wrath of the virgin goddess could only be appeased by the sacrifice of a virgin on her altar, and that none other but the daughter of the offender would be acceptable. Agamemnon, however reluctant, yielded his consent, and the maiden Iphigenia was sent for under the pretence that she was to be married to Achilles. When she was about to be sacrificed the goddess relented and snatched her away, leaving a hind in her place, and Iphigenia, enveloped in a cloud, was carried to Tauris, where Diana made her priestess of her temple.

Chapters: Chapter 1 - Introduction THOSE who have investigated the origin of the romantic fables relating to Charlemagne and his peers are of opinion that the deeds of Charles Martel, and perhaps of other Charleses, have been blended in popular tradition with those properly belonging to Charlemagne. It was indeed a most momentous era; and if our readers will have patience, before entering on the perusal of the fabulous annals which we are about to lay before them, to take a rapid survey of the real history of the times, they will find it hardly less romantic than the tales of the poets. From Spain the way was open for the Saracens (so the followers of Mahomet were called) into France, the conquest of which, if achieved, would have been followed very probably by that of all the rest of Europe, and would have resulted in the banishment of Christianity from the earth. For Christianity was not at that day universally professed, even by those nations which we now regard as foremost in civilization. Great part of Germany, Britain, Denmark, and Russia were still pagan or barbarous.
