Posted by Bryan J. P. Gesinger on February 25, 19100 at 01:53:45: G. K. (Gilbert Keith) Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the deepest thinkers who ever existed, according to Etienne Gilson, a prominent 20th-century Thomistic philosopher. Having struggled with Skepticism as a young man, GKC converted to Christianity around the turn of the century, and soon became one the most fascinating and compelling defenders of the Faith the Christian world had ever known. In his masterly, autobiographical apologetic, iOrthodoxy
(1908), Chesterton offered a stunningly brilliant series of observations which, from various angles, illustrated Christianity's singularly ingenious capacity to accomodate the seemingly irreconcilable paradoxes of human life. It was this element of the Cosmos which struck Chesterton as strangely perplexing, and in Christianity he found them finally intelligible. Of course, intelligibility doesn't necessitate comfort, but it is surely preferable to the skepticism and nihilism which so often precipitate despair. This is not to imply, by any means, that Theistic, Christian optimism is relativistic, either. On the contrary: Catholic Christianity is predicated upon objective Truth. It is precisely that Truth, however paradoxically, which sets us free.

    http://www.defonseka.com/trib_jp04.htm
    J. P de Fonseka and G. K. Chesterton J. P. De Fonseka was one of the greatest English writers Ceylon ever produced. He has been compared with the the best of English essayists like Charles Lamb, E. V. Lucas, G. K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc and was a friend and great admirer of Gilbrt Keith Chesterton. In fact he was natured in the Chester-Belloc school of writing and G. K. was to have a great influence on his writings. This close association brought them together many times. J. P. closely associated Chesterton while he was in England during the period 1926 to 1930. This rare picture of that association shows G. K. Chesterton with J. P. de Fonseka, possibly taken around 1929 while J. P. was in England. J. P. also counted amongst his friends, some of the literary giants of the era. Names mentioned in the articles about him include Hilaire Belloc, E. V. Lucas, Bernard Shaw, Robert Lynd, Eric Gill, A. P. Herbert, Walter de la Mare, Sir John Squire, and Francis Thompson among others. J. P. also edited two of Chesterton's Anthologies (collections of Essays) in 1929. A comprehensive list of Chesterton publications, included in a website dedicated to him, lists two books which J. P. contributed as editor or compiler. An extract from this comprehensive list is reproduced below. A link to this website has been provided at the end of this page.

Updated - Sunday, 26 January, 2003 Prolific English critic and author of verse, essays, novels, and short stories. Chesterton (1874-1936) was with George Bernard Shaw, Hilaire Belloc, and H.G. Wells among the great Edwardian men of letters. He is probably best known for his series of novels featuring the priest-detective Father Brown who went on to appear in some 50 stories. Between 1900 and 1936 Chesterton published one hundred books. "The vast mass of humanity, with their vast mass of idle books and idle words, have never doubted and never will doubt that courage is splendid, that fidelity is noble, that distressed ladies should be rescued, and vanquished enemies spared. There are a large number of cultivated persons who doubt these maxims of daily life, just there are a large number of persons who believe they are the Prince of Wales; and I am told that both classes of people are entertaining conversationalists." (from A Defense of Penny Dreadfuls G.K. Chesterton was born in London into a middle-class family. His father, Edward, was a member of the well-known Kensington auctioneer and estate agents business of Chesterton and his mother, Marie-Louise, was of Franco-Scottish ancestry.
