Internet Resources
Thanks especially to the donations of Joseph Sprug and Archbishop Robert Dwyer, Mount Angel Abbey Library has a large collection of materials by and about Gilbert Keith Chesterton. What follows is a guide to this collection and to research on Chesterton. Most of these materials can be found on the lowest floor of the library, in the Chesterton section (PR 4453). Gilbert Keith (G.K.) Chesterton (1874-1936) was an English writer, literary critic and author of the Father Brown detective stories. He was born in London and educated at St. Paul's School before studying art at the Slade. But art was always secondary to letters. He wrote regular articles for many newspapers and magazines, took over the New Witness on the death of his brother, Cecil, in 1918 and revived it as G.K.'s Weekly in 1924. He was a man of much geniality but he had a strong antipathy for the squalor of industrialism and disliked both capitalism and socialism, yearning, like his great friend Hilaire Belloc (whose books he amusingly illustrated), for a return to the distributivist economics of the Middle Ages. He sought to undermine secularism with an apologia that took religion as the guide and goal of all thought and action. He found sanity and creativity in a God-centered, not man-centered, universe; in an informed heart, not in rationalism or irrationalism. His 111 books (with about a dozen pamphlets) including essays, poetry, novels, and literary, social and religious studies (he was converted to Roman Catholicism in 1922), reveal his tremendous energy, robust humor and mastery of paradox.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936), also known as "G. K.," has become the best known member of that group of Catholic writers who emerged in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born in London in 1874 and enjoyed a very happy childhood, an experience which was to color his later writings and attitude to life, an attitude which has aptly been described as "childlike" in the best sense of the word. This is what sets him apart from most "religious" writers, the fact that he approached religious themes, not as a theological expert, but as a layman with his eyes wide open to the wonder of the world. His exuberant and often paradoxical style has captivated many readers and ensured that his works remain extremely popular.
After a period at art school he became a journalist and author, gradually moving towards a more explicit Christianity. He married Frances Blogg in 1901 and they lived in his adopted town of Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. Their marriage was very happy but they had no children. Although he had opposed the Boer War he saw World War I as justified with England as the underdog. In 1916 he began to edit a weekly journal called

Introduction to
G.K. Chesterton
by Edward Peters, JD/JCD Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was the brightest star in a constellation of great men who illuminated English and Catholic letters during the first half of the twentieth century. Forever linked with such giants as Hilaire Belloc, Msgr. Ronald Knox, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Evelyn Waugh, writers who excelled in two or three forms of writing, Chesterton worked in a half-dozen genres, and mastered nearly all of them. Moreover, his gentle personality and friendly manner of persuasion preserve him as the most readable of the great apologists who fought for Christian truth at the beginning of the bloody 20th century. Chesterton is often called the most quoted man in English; he was certainly one of the most prolific. Beyond his vast literary output, his exhaustive public speaking and debating work did much to advance the cause of common sense in general, and of Christian spiritual wisdom in particular. Indeed, Chesterton's conversion to the Catholic Church in 1922 was (second only to the disruption of the First Vatican Council during the Italian Revolution) the most talked-about religious event in Europe since the conversion of fellow Englishman John Henry Newman some 75 years earlier. Upon his death, Chesterton was named by Pope Pius XI a "Defender of the Catholic Faith" thereby redeeming somewhat a similar title bestowed on but squandered by another Englishman 400 years earlier. His devoted wife of 35 years, Frances Blogg, who helped bring the younger Chesterton out of a confused mishmash of world-views into a more critical Christianity, eventually followed her husband into the Church and died just two years after him.

Biographical Sketch
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the most brilliant and prolific writers of all time. This British journalist's 100 books, 200 short stories, and over 4000 newspaper essays include history, philosophy, theology, economics, social commentary, and literary criticism. His best known works include Orthodoxy, The Man Who Was Thursday, and the beloved Father Brown detective stories. Chesterton's balance of wit and wisdom with humor and humility makes his style as unforgettable as his person. According to one description, Chesterton "weighed about 300 pounds, usually had a cigar in his mouth, and walked around wearing a cape and a crumpled hat, tiny glasses pinched to the end of his nose, swordstick in hand, laughter blowing through his moustache."* For his ability to make others both think and laugh at the same time, he was greatly admired even among debating opponents such as George Bernard Shaw, who called him a "colossal genius." One of the most quoted writers in the English language, Chesterton was a defender of the poor, of the amateur, of common sense, and of Christian faith. First a Unitarian, later an Anglican, and finally a Catholic, Chesterton wrote with broad appeal. His works inspired Mohandas Gandhi to challenge British colonial rule in India, and C.S. Lewis to become a Christian. Chesterton attended art school but never went to college.

G. K. Chesterton The paternal great-grandfather, grandfather and father of G. K. Chesterton were engaged in the business of selling houses,-house agents, as they are called in England. His father, Edward, married Marie Grosjean, whose family had long been English, but had originally come from French Switzerland. They had three children, Gilbert, born on May 29, 1874, Cecil, five years his junior, and Beatrice, who died in childhood. Gilbert's father distinguished between living and making a living: a successful businessman, he had a dozen hobbies, not the least of them the making of a toy-theatre, and he was widely read, especially in English literature. The Debater Greybeards at Play as well as to revise, edit and counsel the works of others. At St. Paul's Gilbert formed lifelong friendships with the future writer Edmund C. Bentley and with Lucian Oldershaw. In 1896 Lucian was courting Ethel Blogg (anglicized from Blogue) and took Gilbert with him to call. At first sight he fell in love with her sister Frances and, after a courtship extended by his then meager earnings, they were married in 1901. It was Lucian who, in 1900, also introduced the twenty-six-year old Gilbert to the thirty-year-old Belloc. Their reciprocal influence was lifelong as was their friendship.

G.K. Chesterton - the artist! G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) is known as a prolific English writer, but it was the artist who was the subject of a lecture last night by Dr. Charles Zarobila, Curator of Special Collections at Grasselli Library, where one of the significant GKC collections, including the portrait at left, resides. The program for the "Friends of the Library" served as a prelude to "An Evening with G.K. Chesterton," to be presented by John C. Chalberg, historian and actor, on Thursday (Nov. 1) at 7:30 p.m. in the D.J.Lombardo Conference Room (free and open to public). (Left) Chuck Zarobila discussed one of G.K. Chesterton's artworks, "Seven Champions of Christendom," that hangs in the Chesterton Room and displayed other items from the collection. At far right is Dr. James Krukones, Interim Associate Academic Vice President, who introduced Zarobila. Return to Timely Coverage
