Arrrgh! Pirates bring out the brooms
  • Boxscore Notes: In the three games, Expos starting pitchers gave up 19 earned runs in 11 2-3 innings for an ERA of 14.66. ... Montreal manager Felipe Alou said he wants to play Jose Vidro exclusively at second base. Alou believes players develop better when they have only one position. He's choosing Vidro over Wilton Guerrero. ... Francisco Cordova will come off the disabled list to start in Atlanta on Wednesday. Cordova has been on the DL since April 11 with inflammation in his right shoulder. He made four minor league rehab starts. ... Give the Pirates credit for honesty. Their daily media notes include a 20-year flashback to the 1979 championship season. Sunday was the anniversary of a 13-inning home win over New York, which was witnessed by just 7,621 fans. The note sheet reported the post-game comment by ex-Pirate Richie Hebner, who was then playing for the Mets: "My father's cemetery has more life than this place."

FIVE-GAME WIN STREAK SNAPPED BY MYRTLE BEACH WILMINGTON, DE - Eric Nelson had a two-hit day but the Wilmington Blue Rocks (29-29; 68-60) managed just four hits total, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (67-59; 28-29) returned the favor from Saturday night, blanking the Rocks, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Wilmington. The 5,158 fans in attendance saw a game that featured 25 strikeouts between the two clubs. With the loss, the Blue Rocks had a five-game winning streak snapped. Blue Rocks starter Wes Obermueller and Pelicans starter John Ennis (6-6) threw dueling shutouts into the third inning. Matt Burch (10-10) relieved Obermueller, who started the game on a restricted pitch count, in the third inning. No runs were scored until the sixth inning when Burch allowed Mark Mortimer to double to the left field corner to open the inning. Adam LaRoche followed with a bunt single and Curt Fiore broke the scoreless tie with a RBI single to right field, scoring Mortimer. Later in the sixth, Burch hit Peter Orr with a pitch with the bases loaded, giving Myrtle Beach its second run. The two runs in the sixth were the first runs surrendered by the Rocks bullpen in 25 and one-third innings of work.
