April 6 ~  Ambition Join'd Power of Myth Love 's but a frailty of the mind
When 'tis not w i t h ambition j o i n d ." ~ William Congreve As ironic as any play he wrote, when English playwright and poet William Congreve (1670-1729) released his Way of the World (1700), the play failed terribly. This so discouraged him that he quit the stage, retiring to live as a country gentleman. "Say what you will, 'tis better to be left than never to have been loved," he wrote in Act 2 of the famous five-act play. Often revived, Way of the World is considered his masterpiece, "the best of the Restoration plays." A comedy of manners and satire of the time he lived; its beautiful heroine Millamant offered actresses a fine comedic role. "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned," he observed. Born to genteel society of Leeds, Congreve's other major plays included The Old Bachelor The Double-Dealer (1693), and Love for Love Praised by Samuel Johnson , Congreve was a wizard with comic dialogue and intricate plot twists which poked fun at his society's rules about love and marriage "Music has charms to soothe a savage breast," Congreve believed, "to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak."

WILLIAM CONGREVE
False though She be
FALSE though she be to me and love,
For still the charmer I approve,
Though I deplore her change. In hours of bliss we oft have met:
They could not always last;
And though the present I regret,
A Hue and Cry after Fair Amoret
Coquette and coy at once her air,
Careless she is, with artful care,
Affecting to seem unaffected.
She likes herself, yet others hates
For that which in herself she prizes;
And, while she laughs at them, forgets
She is the thing that she despises. Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter

WILLIAM CONGREVE
English dramatist and poet, regarded as the ablest writer of comedy of the Restoration period. William Congreve was born in Bardsey, near Leeds, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Later he studied law in London but soon abandoned it to pursue a literary career. He published a prose work, Incognita (1692), and a few poems, but did not achieve success until he turned to playwriting. With the production of his comedy The Old Bachelor in 1693, his talent was established. It was followed by The Double Dealer (1693) and Love for Love (1695). These plays were cynical comedies of manners, written with grace and wit but without profundity. They were designed for his close friend, the actor Anne Bracegirdle, who played the leading roles. At this time Congreve became the manager of Lincoln's Inn, a new theater. He then wrote his only tragedy, The Mourning Bride (1697). When the work of Congreve and his colleagues was attacked by the clergyman Jeremy Collier as licentious, Congreve replied with Amendments of Mr. Collier's False and Imperfect Citations

Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast, By magic numbers and persuasive sound The Mourning Bride, act 1, scene 1 The power of music is well known. In addition to William Congreve's famous peroration, researchers at the University of Toronto ( www.utoronto.ca ) have found that music can help those who suffer from insomnia, which is estimated to affect 30 to 40 percent of the general population. Led by Dr. Leonid Kayumov, director of the university's Sleep Research Clinic, the multidisciplinary team involved in this research includes computer programmers, music therapists, composers, neurophysiologists, and psychiatrists. Most intriguing is their use of computers and synthesizers to create sequences of notes that are customized for each patient, who then listens to the music while trying to sleep. After documenting a patient's subjective complaints and taking objective measurements to determine the exact nature of the problem, an electroencephalograph (EEG) records the electrical activity at several points on the surface of the brain during various states of consciousness, such as alert concentration and deep relaxation. The low-frequency brain waves associated with sleep are called theta (4 to 7 Hz) and high-amplitude delta (0.5 to 2 Hz). The EEG signals are sent to a computer for Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis, after which a specially designed algorithm generates MIDI note data based on the FFT. This is not a direct conversion from the frequency spectrum of the electrical waveforms from the brain; the music arises from the relationships between the EEG signals, which form a map of the brain's electrical activity in different areas.
