Blake was a poet, a painter and an engraver. Chambers writes that Blake's poetry "include some of the purest lyrics in the English language and express his ardent belief in the freedom of the imagination and his hatred of rationalism and materialism
Browning, Elizabeth Barrett
Suffered from a childhood spinal injury and was "doomed to invalidism and seclusion from the world" until she met Robert with whom she eloped, much to the consternation of her father. The Brownings fled to Italy, and there they spent the rest of their days (at least Elizabeth did). The Browning romance was celebrated in Rudolf Besier's The Barretts of Wimpole Street . Her poems run deep with religious feeling, with her love of Italy, and her love of Robert.

Stowe: The Elysian Fields
William Congreve (1670-1729) was a close personal friend of Sir Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham. Together with Addison and Steele, Vanbrugh, Bridgeman, the Duke of Marlborough, and others, Congreve and Temple were members of the Kit-Cat Cluba group of influential Whigs dedicated to ensuring a Protestant succession to the throne. (The Club takes its name from Christopher Cat, the keeper of the Cat and Fiddlethe pastry shop and tavern where the group often met to discuss politics, news, and literature during the first three decades of the 18th century.) Congreve is best known as the most polished playwright of the Restoration period. Though he published only four comedies and one tragedy, he was both a popular and critical success. His most famous play, The Way of the World (1700), has an intricate plot and sparkling dialogue, and like Congreve's other comedies and many of the other plays of the period it focuses on the struggle for power and sex while it criticizes the institution of arranged marriages. Though its hero and heroine succeed in marrying for both love and money, they are more than consumate manipulators. Their true success is based on mutual respect and an equality between partners surprising for the time. Congreve's Monument was designed by William Kent in 1736. Atop a slender pyramid sits a carved stone monkey peering at himself in a mirror. The visual metaphor suggests that Congreve's plays showed his audience what monkeys they had made of themselves. Supporting this interpretation is an inscription carved in Latin that states:

William Congreve - Author
Eric S. Rump - Editor/introduction Book: Paperback SYM=GetSymbol(self.location.search); contentWritten="no"; William Congreve (1670-1729)established his reputation at the age of twenty-three with The Old Bachelor, the first of the four plays contained in this volume. Seven years later, he turned his back on the stage, having written The Double Dealer, Love for Love and The Way of the World. A master of the comedy of manners, Congreve was the most elegant of the Restoration dramatists. With piercing accuracy he depicted the shallow, brittle world of 'society' where the right artifice in manners, fashion and conversation - and money - eased the passage to success. Through sparkling, witty dialogue and brilliant characterization - Lady Plyant, Valentine, Lady Touchwood, Mirabell and Millamant - Congreve exposed the follies and vanities of that world, and suggested that behind the glinting mirror lay something more brutal. ‘The language is everywhere that of Men of Honour, but their Actions are those of Knaves; a proof that he was perfectly well acquainted with human Nature, and frequented what we call polite company.’ - Voltaire

John Dryden
George Etherege Aphra Behn ... home John Dryden (1631-1700) The Seventeenth Century's most important literary figure and one of the most versatile writers in the history of English literature, Dryden was a professional man of letters, the first ever to be officially elected Poet Laureate. He was a poet, playwright, essayist, translator, literary critic, Fellow of the Royal Society and Historiographer Royal. Samuel Johnson called him 'the father of English criticism.' He began his career in drama by writing three comedies, these were none too successful. His first real success came in 1665 with The Indian Emperor , the sequel to The Indian Queen . In the next fourteen years he turned out on average one play a year. In 1670 he wrote one of his most famous plays The Conquest of Granada, this was written in the heroic tragedy form, a conflict between love and honour in rhyming couplets, full of rant and bombast. Dryden's first attempt at blank verse in imitation of Shakespeare was to become his greatest play, All For Love . One of England's greatest critics, he was the first to develop a major body of criticism. Much of this comes in the form of prefaces. He died in May 1700 and was buried in the grave of Chaucer in Westminster Abbey.
