Clunbury Parish, Shropshire, England to Abany, Green County, Wisconsin Note: For an excellent discussion of the history of the Tilley name itself, see Rich Mohrmann's web page at http://home.att.net/~mohrweb/mohrmann/tilley.html For information on the Morris line Martha Tilley married into, click here: http://www.geocities.com/hmpg01/index.html For The Australian Tilleys, click here
Their son:
Sampson Cotton Tilley was born in 1796 and baptised February 1, 1797. He married Martha Hintze. From the Green County History of 1884: "Sampson Tilley, Sr., was a native of Shropshire, England, born in 1796. He was reared upon a farm, and married to Martha Hintz, also a native of Shropshire. Nine children blessed their union, four of whom are now livingSampson, Edward, Martha and Mary. In 1852 he left England and came to America and settled at Albany, Green County, Wisconsin where he lived until his death in 1862. Mrs. Tilley died in 1859." Sampson was baptized at Clunbury Parish at Clunbury, Shropshire, England, February 1, 1797. The family was supposed to have moved from a small town by the name of Newton, Shropshire, England to Boxen Bower, Churstoke, Montgomeryshire, Wales, two years before they came to America. The information given to me by Virginia Day, of Madison, Wisconsin, who did extensive research on this line, was that they were caretakers of the courthouse there and lived on the third floor, serving ale and beer during trials. They took the job to save money for the trip. They came to America in March of 1852 via Canada and Milwaukee bringing their furniture with them.
