1. F. Marion Crawford, For The Blood Is The Life And Other Stories
F. Marion Crawford, For the Blood Is The Life And Other Stories (White Wolf Press, 1996) F. Marion Crawford (18541909) was a popular author around the start of the 20th century.

F. Marion Crawford, For the Blood Is The Life And Other Stories (White Wolf Press, 1996) F. Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was a popular author around the start of the 20th century. While his novels have fallen out of popular favor, several of his short stories of the supernatural have been reprinted and anthologized throughout this century. For the Blood Is The Life_And Other Stories gathers seven short stories that were collected in Wandering Ghosts On the whole, this is a solid little collection. Crawford was a very straightforward writer and there is none of the overblown flowery language sometimes used in the Victorian era. There is also very little of hidden or implied horror; the monsters and ghosts are shown forthrightly with no less impact for being seen in the light. Indeed, several entries aren't really horror stories at all, although all rely on elements of the supernatural. "The Dead Smile" is a chilling story, in which the death of a cruel father does not end the torments for his son, his niece (who is betrothed to the son), or the rest of the household. Although the atmosphere is appropriately tense, the resolution is disappointingly anticlimactic. (There is a possible implication in the ending that would make it more horrible but I don't think it's what the author had in mind.) "The Screaming Skull" is one of the longer stories in the collection, concerning a skull that, as the title states, periodically screams and a retired naval captain, who may be indirectly responsible for the death of the skull's original owner. The tension is emphasized by the narration being a first-person monologue by the captain, to a visiting friend, as the events occur.

It is unnecessary to go into further details. The conversation had assumed proportions which would have bored Prometheus on his rock, which would have driven Tantalus to distraction, and which would have impelled Ixion to seek relaxation in the simple but instructive dialogues of Herr Ollendorff, rather than submit to the greater evil of listening to our talk. We had sat at table for hours; we were bored, we were tired, and nobody showed signs of moving. "It is a very singular thing," said Brisbane. Everybody stopped talking. Brisbane's voice was not loud, but possessed a peculiar quality of penetrating general conversation, and cutting it like a knife. Everybody listened. Brisbane, perceiving that he had attracted their general attention, lit his cigar with great equanimity. "It is very singular," he continued, "that thing about ghosts. People are always asking whether anybody has seen a ghost. I have." "Bosh! What, you? You don't mean to say so, Brisbane? Well, for a man of his intelligence!"

Francis Marion Crawford was born in 1854 in Bagni di Lucca (Italy), to American parents: the sculptor Thomas Crawford (1813?-1857), and Louisa Cutler Ward Crawford (later Terry), Julia Ward Howe's sister. After education in Rome, Concord (N.H.), England, Germany, and India, Crawford went to Boston in 1881 to try writing and possibly politics. He returned to Europe after success with his first novel, continuing to write and in 1884 marrying Elizabeth Christophers Berdan, daughter of General Hiram Berdan, rifle inventor, engineer, and Civil War sharpshooter. The couple first lived with Crawford's mother in Rome, but, after the birth of the first of their four children, Crawford bought a cliff-side property in Sant'Agnello di Sorrento, Italy, which became the Villa Crawford. The growing family eventually adopted the surname Marion-Crawford.

Bertun Collection Dates: Extent: ca. 160 items Abstract: Correspondence, logbooks, reminiscences, and other papers, reflecting Bertun's career, especially his activities as captain of the steam yacht IOLANDA (out of New London, Conn.) and friend of its owner Morton F. Plant, and friendships with F. Marion Crawford and members of the Russian royal family. Identification: Coll. 216
Biography of Bertun, Charles A. K. (Charles Anton Knutson), 1868-1967
Charles Anton Knutson Bertun was born in Alesund, Norway, September 28, 1868, and died in Decatur, Illinois, June 6, 1967. He went to sea at the age of 15, and was shipwreched in 1885 in the Norwegian Barkenting COURIER. He later became an American citizen in 1895, graduated from New York Nautical College and captained F. Marion Crawford's yacht, EZRA NYE, an ex-Sandy Hook pilot boat, in the summer of 1896 from New York to Sorrento, Italy. The Fall Bertun joined the American Line (International Navigation Company) as fourth officer, gradually working his way through the grades until he commanded the ocean-going steam yacht, ALVINA, owned by the company president. In 1903 he became Marine Superintendent of the Line. A merger of the Company with several others resulted in a general reorganization of personnel, and rather than taking command of small vessels, Captain Bertun became master of the steam yacht, VENETIA, owned by Morton Plant of New London, Connecticut. He then commanded the IOLANDA, built by Plant in 1908. In 1911 the vessel was sold to Plant's Russian friend Mme. Elisabeth Teretchenko.
