Guidelines for American Tourists
T he following advisory for American travelers heading for France was compiled from information provided by the US State Department, the Central Intelligence Agency, the US Chamber of Commerce, the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, and some very expensive spy satellites that the French don't know about. It is intended as a guide for American travellers only.
General Overview
France is a medium-sized foreign country situated in the continent of Europe. It is an important member of the world community, though not nearly as important as it thinks. It is bounded by Germany, Spain, Switzerland and some smaller nations of no particular consequence and with not very good shopping. France is a very old country with many treasures, such as the Louvre and EuroDisney. Among its contributions to western civilization are champagne, Camembert cheese and the guillotine. Although France likes to think of itself as a modern nation, air conditioning is little used and it is next to impossible to get decent Mexican food. One continuing exasperation for American visitors is that the people wilfully persist in speaking French, though many will speak English if shouted at. As in any foreign country, watch your change at all times.

Statement of Programs and Library Needs: Special Collections collects the literature of the Appalachian Region as comprehensively as possible. The majority of the works collected are printed works, although efforts have also been made to acquire manuscript materials. See, for example, the thorough collection of printed publications of Sherwood Anderson Collection . However, there are relatively few manuscripts available for comprehensive-level research in Anderson studies. In addition, the department has a good representative collection of 18th-century British literature, which emphasized major writers and genres. Also represented in the collection is a growing collection of 19th-century American literature in which minor writers are emphasized, as well as Southern writers, genres, and topical literature (e.g. Civil War poetry). The majority of the materials represented and actively collected are printed. The department has endeavored to collect representative pieces from literary genres, such as speculative fiction, and topics from all of Western European literature expensive materials are not purchased in this area. Up until very recently, the department purchased first editions and especially printed editions of contemporary American and British writers. Because of increasingly higher prices for this material, the department no longer makes significant purchases in this area.

Provides a clear summary and synthesis of the world's great spiritual traditions and new age metaphysics as well as the classics. New thought mysticism and consciousness raising, spiritual philosophy blending with teachings of esoteric arcane wisdom helping raise universal consciousness that can lead to enlightenment. It has been said there are as many *spiritual paths* as there are people on them. It is also true that all paths lead to the mountain top . . . eventually. Some maintain the spiritual path is intensely personal and must be found alone. Others think some paths can be taught. We agree with the Eastern thought that says enabling the other to see through the illusions of life and to attain truth is the real miracle. In that spirit we offer several different paths, and links to many more. Take some time and read them. Then choose what resonates with you. Many find that bits and pieces from different paths work for them. This is called the ECLECTIC PATH and has many *New Parables.* But remember:
Ram Dass : "He who runs around the mountain sampling *different paths* is not climbing."

Editorial By Philip James
Mechanics, not microbes, are the menace to civilisation Norman Douglas (1868-1952) Douglas's quote was probably written as a witty remark, indicating the growing consensus that the human race had effectively controlled infectious diseases. Antibiotics, the super-drugs, offered a future free from the scourge which had beset our ancestors: we should be able to live our long lives, little affected by the ravages of infection and safe in the knowledge that any minor ailment could be easily treated. Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) stated: Civilisation advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them . On this basis, the advancement of civilisation in England has certainly been put on hold for a while. Is this cessation of normal activity the scourge of microbial infection or the result of the meddling of mechanics? Is it the inevitable result of biology or the effect of mechanisation breaking down the frontiers of natural systems? The primary reason for the actions currently being taken is the well-founded fear of a spread of foot and mouth disease. From

".....an ignorant and pretentious bunch try to improve on what is already the finest..... The improviser sets himself up at the stove just as he does anywhere else. With his eyes turned to heaven instead of on his saucepans, he drops in a pinch of curry powder here, a spoonful of brandy there, and somewhere else, something even worse - a few drops of custard! He uses any old stuffing, he dribbles in some frightful additive. . .. Old words, classic terms, and traditions are all flouted by these priests of improvisation - it seems that we are a long way removed from the discreet combinations of flavors, thought out at length, that were once the basis of French gourmandise. . . ."

November 22, 1996 Advertising Booze
You can tell the ideals of a nation by its advertising. Norman Douglas(1868-1952)
There is a big debate about whether to advertise hard liquor on radio and television.I can see one of those commercials now: A glamorous couple, usually one male and one female, sitting on the edge of a bed sipping an amber colored liquid and looking longingly at each other, while the announcer says, "To free you of those inconvenient inhibitions, drink Seagrams." At the end of the commercial, a song tells the viewer that "just one glass does the trick." In a later commercial, we see the back of a man standing in front of a urinal, while the announcer says, "No need to drink a pint; just a few ounces of Seagrams will do it." I say "let 'em advertise!" Let's also advertise marijuana, cocaine, heroine, rifles, hand guns, dynamite and other explosives. Why not? We advertise beer, wine, prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, pain killers of all kinds, laxatives, hemorrhoid treatments; in short, everything that isn't illegal. I can see it now, a man standing with a smoking automatic pistol, blowing the smoke coming out of the barrel and saying, "He won't bother me ever again." This is followed by an announcer who says, "To get the job done right, use Remington." Come to think of it, I used to see those commercials in the movies when I was a kid. They called them "westerns." I think that they still have them on television.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.
We live very close together. So our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.
I have observed that religious practice is not a precondition either of ethical conduct or of happiness itself. I have also suggested that, whether a person practices religion or not, the spiritual qualities of love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, humility and so on are indispensable.
