Scotland. He spent the years from 1894 to 1896 in diplomatic service in Russia but resigned from the foreign service in 1896. His masterpiece, South Wind (1917), which is set on Nepenthe, an invented Mediterranean island much like Capri, satirizes everything from colonial history to conventional morality.

Late Orchestral Music
(Revision 2.2, 1/6/94)
This list includes music written during the period from the late eighteenth century through the present day. The majority of the music from this time span is generally considered to be Classical (roughly 1750-1820), Romantic (roughly 1820-1910) and 20th Century (1910-present), but many subgenres are represented including the Rococco, Galant and Impressionistic styles. The term "orchestral" as applied here refers to music written for orchestral ensemble without a predominant part for instrumental soloist(s), and may include dance music or incidental music (e.g., suites, serenades, symphonies, ballets, etc.). Chamber music is not included in this list (see Late Chamber Music ) nor are concertos or works for soloists and orchestra (see Late Concertos ) or keyboard music (see Late Keyboard Music ). For lists of early music CDs, see Early Keyboard Music Early Chamber Music , or Early Orchestral Music In some cases, a CD will contain a mixture of keyboard, chamber, concerto or orchestral pieces, occasionally spanning both early and late classifications. Where ever possible, these have been listed in multiple lists to facilitate locating individual pieces. For revision 2, many new recordings have been added (approximately 630 total new listings across all lists for a total of 750 CDs). In general, these new recordings are identifiable by the compositions being justified closer to the left margin. In some cases, though not all, newly added recordings will have the key identified for the pieces, as applicable. Composers newly represented in the list are designated by a plus sign (+) in the "Composers Represented" section.
