where the fires of hell are blown Trampin' along thru the darkness,
Splashin' my way thru' the rain
With a chafin' pack slung on my back,
Bound for the trenches again. Flashes o' light in the distance,
Splashes o' red in the sky,
And a burstin' shell creatin' Hell
In a convoy creepin' by. Our line moves on like a shadow,
Pushing it's way thru' the wreck,
Each man in his place and rain in his face And streamin' cold down his neck. Silent and grave movin' forward, Each havin' thoughts all his own, As we trot in the path of the "warlord's wrath" Where the fires of Hell are blown. Dreamin' o' home and the Old Folks, And the fields of yellow grain, And the ole rock spring 'n' everything Elisha Ransom Swain September 1918 to April 1919 as recalled circa 1960's - ed.

INTRODUCTION
AFTERWORD TABLE OF CONTENTS HOME
a good opportunity to even the score I think the Germans were as surprised as we were. They had not opened fire. We hit the dirt. We were without cover of any sort. The Sergeant said, "We can't stay here, pull out single file one man at a time." To execute this maneuver, the man at the extreme end jumps up and runs 10 paces and falls down, when he falls the second man jumps up and runs 10 paces and falls. Each time a man falls the next man to him jumps up and runs. Thus the men that follow are occupying the places that the man preceding them had just vacated. About a hundred yards to our left was a narrow supply road and beyond that a wooded hill that offered protection from both machine gun and artillery fire. We made this spot and from where we were we could see that German infantry was pouring through a gap in the woods less than 1000 yards ahead which gave us a good opportunity to even the score. That day we moved again into the night. Every day now the pressure we were putting on showed its effect on German morale. Many of the machine gun outfits were ready and willing to surrender and be sent to the rear as were the two machine gun units we found across the supply road from us when daylight came.
