About G. A. Henty G. A. Henty' s life (1832-1902) was filled with exciting adventure. Completing Westminster School, he attended Cambridge University. Along with a rigorous course of study, Henty participated in boxing, wrestling, and rowing. The strenuous study and healthy, competitive participation in sports prepared Henty to be with the British army in Crimea, as a war correspondent witnessing Garbaldi fight in Italy, being present in Paris during the Franco-Prussian war, in Spain with the Carlists, at the opening of the Suez Canal, touring India with the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and a trip to the California gold fields.
These are only a few of his exciting adventures.
G.A. Henty lived during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and began his story telling career with his own children. After dinner, he would spend an hour or two in telling them a story that would continue the next day. Some stories took weeks! A friend was present one day and watched the spell-bound reaction of his children suggesting that he write down his stories so others could enjoy them. He did. Henty wrote approx. 144 books plus stories for magazines and was dubbed as "The Prince of Story-Tellers" and "The Boy's Own Historian." One of Mr. Henty's secretaries reported that he would quickly pace back and forth in his study dictating stories as fast as the secretary could record them.

G. A. Henty was a 19th Century (1832-1902) storyteller who wrote many books and stories. He was so popular that he was dubbed "The Prince of Storytellers" in his lifetime. Fortunately, Henty’s books have been reprinted so they are not lost! His imaginative tales bring you learning in an enchanting manner, teaching English vocabulary, culture, geography, and history all woven together in a well-written story like a fine Persian rug. Since Henty wrote in a time when our language was different, being more refined and broader, and much more complicated than our speech of today. Therefore, if you would like to have your child learn a very extensive use of words, many of which are still perfectly usable and wonderful, as opposed to being archaic and/or "corny," Henty’s books afford your family an excellent opportunity. Among Henty’s titles are: "The Cat of Bubastes" set in Pharonic Egypt; "The Young Carthaginian" a story of Hannibal’s life; "For the Temple: A Tale of the Fall of Jerusalem;" "Beric the Briton: A Story of the Roman Invasion;" "St. Bartholomew’s Eve: A Tale of the Huguenot Wars (in France);" "By Pike and Dyke: A Tale of the Rise of the Dutch Republic;" "Under Drake’s Flag: A Tale of the Spanish Main;" "With Lee in Virginia: A Story of the American Civil War;" and "By Right of Conquest or With Cortez in Mexico."

09/29/1998 New Books reviewed by Rob Shearer For many parents, the name of G.A. Henty is magical. We remember, as children, reading his action-packed stories set in exotic times and places. We probably didn't realize it, but we were learning lots of history while reading a rip-roaring good yarn. G.A. Henty (1832-1902) lived during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). He has been called "The Prince of the Story-Tellers." The books began when a friend begged him to write down the tales that he was telling to his own children. Henty went on to write 144 books! Along with Robert Louis Stevenson and Howard Pyle, his books dominated children's literature from 1860-1920. Then, sadly his books went out of print.
Henty's heroes are always young men with admirable character traits. They are courageous and honorable. Henty, in fact, was critized in his own day because his heroes were "too Christian." He was also a meticulous historian. He read widely and based his stories on a close and accurate recounting of events.
PrestonSpeed Publications in Pennsylvania has brought 12 of the Henty stories back into print so far and have plans to continue publishing 6-8 each year. They've taken the trouble to get original English editions of each title (there are numerous pirated American editions of Henty's books - many of them abridged) so that the text is exactly what the author intended. Each Henty is 230-400 pages in a high-quality, hardback binding.
