George Alfred Henty, the Prince of Storytellers
G. A.Henty's life (1832-1902) was filled with exciting adventure. Completing Westminster School, he attended Cambridge University. Along with a rigorous course of study, Henty participated in boxing, wrestling, and rowing. The strenuous study and healthy, competitive participation in sports prepared Henty to be with the British army in Crimea, as a war correspondent witnessing Garbaldi fight in Italy, being present in Paris during the Franco-Prussian war, in Spain with the Carlists, at the opening of the Suez Canal, touring India with the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and a trip to the California gold fields. These are only a few of his exciting adventures. G.A. Henty lived during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and began his story telling career with his own children. After dinner, he would spend an hour or two in telling them a story that would continue the next day. Some stories took weeks! A friend was present one day and watched the spell-bound reaction of his children suggesting that he write down his stories so others could enjoy them. He did. Henty wrote approx. 144 books plus stories for magazines and was dubbed as "The Prince of Story-Tellers" and "The Boy's Own Historian." One of Mr. Henty's secretaries would quickly pace back and forth in his study dictating stories as fast as the secretary could record them.

Children's Literature
Island 4: Boys' Stories of School, Adventure, and Empire Series publishing for gifts and prizes The pioneer writer of boys' adventure stories was Frederick Marryatt (1792-1848), an ex-naval officer who wrote a whole series of shipboard novels. His Masterman Ready, or the Wreck of the Pacific , first published in three volumes in 1841-42, is a desert island story in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson . It was ten years later before a second edition was called for, but many more followed. The reprint shown here, from Frederick Warne's Prize Library series in 1891, is open at a typical publisher's catalogue of the period, listing title after title suitable for gifts and school (or Sunday School) prizes. R. M. Ballantyne and boys' adventure stories R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894), the son of an Edinburgh printer who was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada as a teenager, created boys' adventure stories that both instilled the values of manly independence and conveyed (from the author's personal experience) an extraordinary range of information about exciting, dangerous new career opportunities. His best-known work Coral Island is shown in an earlier case. Displayed here are a reprint of Ballantyne's first book

Who is G.A. Henty?
Henty was English. Many of his books are in setting that help us understand English history, history farther back than the landing of the pilgrims, a European perspective.
The Arapahoe Library System has started building a collection of Henty's books. Take advantage of this tremendous blessing and check out one and spread the news. Below is a listing of the books already in their system. They have purchased from several different publishers. You may find that you prefer one publisher to another. Some have a glossary at the back. Right now, they have 23 items. One is a book by William Potter entitled The Boy's Guide to the Historical Adventures of G. A. Henty . This book gives a one page review of the plot of 72 of Henty's books. One of the most helpful parts of this book is the Table of Contents. It lists the books according to eras in history. Of the items listed in Arapahoe's system for Henty, you will find that they have four that are books on tape. Some are abridged and some are unabridged. Try one of both to see if you prefer one narrator over the other.

Children's Books
Edward Stratemeyer, 1862-1930
Edward Stratemeyer was the founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The Syndicate hired writers to develop plots outlined by Stratemeyer, using characters he created. The Nancy Drew books, the Hardy Boys, the Motion Picture Boys, the Tom Swift series, the Bobbsey Twins, and the Rover Boys were all products of the Stratemeyer Syndicate. The Syndicate grew out of Stratemeyer's earlier success as an author. He was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1862. He worked in his family's tobacco shop, but started writing as a teenager, in 1886, and met with almost immediate success. Once he began writing, he never stopped. He began by writing for juvenile magazines; he also edited several children's publications. He began the Rover Boys series in 1899; that series continued until 1926. Building on that success, he developed the series of the Motion Picture Boys and the Tom Swifts under the name Victor Appleton; the Nancy Drews as Carolyn Keene; and the Hardy Boys as Franklin W. Dixon. He began the Stratemeyer Syndicate in 1906. It went on to enormous success.

Locating the Victorians The Empire and Beyond The Boxer Rebellion, 1900: A Selection of Books, Prints and Photographs
Frances Wood
EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION
Detail from a Chinese nianhua print of the Boxer Rebellion. n late nineteenth-century China, popular unrest was provoked by famine, an enfeebled central government, and the perception that foreigners were taking control of the country. In the north-eastern province of Shandong, a rebel group which practised martial arts, called 'The Boxers United in Righteousness', launched attacks on German missionaries.
The movement spread through North China. Isolated missionary settlements were attacked; railway stations and lines were destroyed and, with official support, the Boxers besieged the Legation or diplomatic quarter in Peking (Beijing) between June 20 and August 14 when a joint force of British, American, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Italian and Austrian troops arrived.
Books by survivors of the Siege of the Legations or missionary massacres rarely acknowledge that most victims of the Boxers, whether Christian converts or simply innocent residents, were Chinese; and the Chinese government was humbled and financially crippled by the terms demanded by the foreign powers.

The Giant Library for Boys and Girls G. A. Henty G. One of Mr. Henty's secretaries reported that he would quickly pace back and forth in his study dictating stories as fast as the secretary could record them. Henty's stories revolve around a fictional boy hero during fascinating periods of history. His heroes are diligent, courageous, intelligent and dedicated to their country and cause in the face, at times, of great peril. His histories, particularly battle accounts, have been recognized by historian scholars for their accuracy. In fact, the only criticism Henty faced by the liberals of his day was that his heroes were "too Christian." There is nothing dry in Mr. Henty's stories and thus he removes the drudgery and laborious task often associated with the study of history.

Robinson Crusoe, Little Women, Tarzan of the Apes,
Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels, Little Red Riding Hood, Black Beauty Home Those of the Victorian and Edwardian eras must be found complete and clean and in their original bindings; but the further back you step back in time the less likely you will find fine copies of stories and picture books that have once been cherished by juvenile owners. This observation applies, of course, to all classes of literature - the older the book the less likely is it to survived intact - but children's, especially well-loved titles, it refers with special force. It is surprising how many have, in fact, withstood the ravages of time on the shelves of the collectors of 'juveniles', as the antiquarian bookseller head this section of their catalogues. Very few books for the amusement of child literature came into existence before the middle of the 18th century. Early Children's Books consisted of devotional manuals, courtesy-books and books used in the classroom. In the early days children read for pleasure what they considered the more interesting of their instructional and school books, the intelligent amongst them dipping into any adult work they could find. John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, 1679, Robinson Crusoe by Alexander Defoe, 1719, and Dean Swift's Gulliver's Travels, 1726, were soon claimed as their own by the young, especially when abridged versions, luridly illustrated, appeared in the bookshops. Many of them knew the entire series of Aesop's Fables by heart.

REH to Tevis Clyde Smith, ca. 20 February 1928 [SL 1 #10]: [Upton Sinclair, in The Profits of Religion ] "relegates to the limbo of intellectual oblivion such men as Haeckel... I think that a man like Haeckel, who spent ten years in classifying a single atomic insect, certainly should be granted the title of 'Thinker.'" The same source also has Haeckel named among men who "looked beyond the human" to the cosmic. REH to Tevis Clyde Smith, ca. March 1928 [SL 1 #11], contains a fairly lengthy digression concerning Haeckel and his theory of "material monism." REH to Tevis Clyde Smith, ca. March 1928:
