Protestant Marian Devotion Many Catholics might not realize that they are not the only ones who love and honor Our Lady. Several Protestant Christian poets have written beautiful poems about the Mother of God. Let us look at some of these Marian poems. Sir Water Scott (1771-1832), a poet and novelist, wrote a beautiful verse to Our Lady extolling the power of Our Lady's help as he depicts a woman praying to her: Ave Maria, Maiden mild. Thou canst hear [us] from the wild. Thou canst save amid despair. Henry Wardsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), the great American poet, wrote of Our Lady: And if our faith gave us nothing more Than this Example of all Womanhood, So mild, so merciful, so strong, so good, So patient, peaceful, loyal, loving, pure This were enough to prove it higher and truer Than all the creeds the world had known before. William Wordsworth (1770-1850) in his "Hymn to the Virgin" has given us the now-famous phrase that Our Lady is "Our tainted nature’s solitary boast." Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) wrote the following lines in The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner

In their way pleasant. But to me
Not one of these deserves the praise

Cheerful notice we are living
Another day refreshed by sleep,
When its festival we keep. Now although I would not slight Those kindly words we use 'Good night'

    Tales from Shakespeare
Tales from Shakespeare was written by Charles Lamb (1775-1834) and his sister Mary Lamb (1764-1847) in 1807 as a prose adaptation for children. We present here the edition as illustrated by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) in 1899 and 1909. Mary wrote most of the comedies, about 14 of the 20.
    Preface
T HE following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare, for which purpose his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent are has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore, words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided. What these Tales shall have been to the young readers, that and much more it is the writers' wish that the true Plays of Shakespeare may prove to them in older yearsenrichers of the fancy, strengtheners of virtue, a withdrawing from all selfish and mercenary thoughts, a lesson of all sweet and honourable thoughts and actions, to teach courtesy, benignity, generosity, humanity: for of examples, teaching these virtues, his pages are full.

Gilchrist Family Papers - Biographical Sketch
The accomplishments of the Gilchrist family enabled them to form unusual relationships with famous literati and artists of the nineteenth century. Each member of the Gilchrist family pursued individual interests in the disciplines of art, literature, science, and medicine. As each member of the family expanded in his/her discipline, interaction with notable individuals expanded. The correspondence and diaries contained in this collection disclose not only the unique relationships they had with writers and artists of the nineteenth century but also reveal the joys and hardships of this unconventional family. Anne Gilchrist was born Anne Burrows in 1828 to John Parker and Henrietta Borrows. She was a descendent of an upper-class family, a fact which enabled her to receive a formal education. Anne was interested in literature and exchanging theoretical ideas with intellectuals: an interest that her father enthusiastically encouraged. At the age of eleven she suffered the death of her father, who died from an illness which ensued after a fall from a horse. Anne had had a close and supportive relationship with him, and his death affected her deeply. Living with her mother Henrietta in London, Anne met Alexander Gilchrist. Alexander (known as Alex) was born in 1828 to James and Dorothy Gilchrist. James Gilchrist, the son of a Scottish farmer, was a writer and philosopher, whose most successful work was titled
