Charles and Mary Lamb
(Charles: 1775 - 1834)
(Mary: 1764 - 1847)
Charles and his sister are best known for their rewritten version of Shakespeare for children. They were born into a poor family. Their father was a London's lawyer clerk. Charles went to school at Christ's Hospital where he found a friend - this friend was Samuel Coleridge. After finishing his tudies he went to work as a clerk in East India House (London). He worked there for the next thirty years. Yet the economic situation of his family did not improve. In fact, the income was his salary and whatever Mary earned by needlework. They say she must have been under great pressure. The strain finally led to murder - in 1796 she stabbed her mother to death because she dared to intervene in the quarrel between Mary and one of her apprentice. Mary was then tried and the authority claimed that she was insane and decided to send her to an asylum. Short time earlier Charles was through a nervous breakdown. In 1799 Mary returned home and started living with Charles. Yet she was still very labile and suffered from several breakdowns. There was also the thing with her reputation - after all, she was murderer and lunatic (as they said) and therefore they had to move a few times. But despite all those problems, Charles loved his sister very much. First poems by Charles were published in 1796. He also wrote a few plays and adapted
