Sinclair Lewis American Author As the first American to win the Nobel Prize for literature (1930), Sinclair Lewis holds a unique position in the pantheon of literary greats. Though he began his career as a reporter, he eventually turned to fiction. Main Street and Babbitt brought him significant recognition (1920 and 1922, respectively) but Lewis refused the Pulitzer Prize for his novel Arrowsmith in 1925. Elmer Gantry (1927) is regarded as Lewis' finest work. In all, Lewis wrote nearly two dozen novels and three plays.

Students will learn to appreciate some of the great short stories of world literature through a study of selected works. Students will learn to understand and appreciate the techniques and styles of a wide range of novelists and short story writers. Students will refine their independent reading skills through summer reading of three novels. Students will learn to study the novel within historical, social, philosophical, and religious contexts. Students will refine their verbal skills by writing essays, a research paper, and preparing oral reports on novels and short stories. Summer reading is required of all AP English students during the summer reading preceding their senior year. Students will be given a reading list at the end of their junior year, and they will be asked to choose three works to read over the summer. Ideally, each student should choose a different novel. One novel will be used for a research paper at the end of the first marking period; one novel will be used for an essay due at the end of the first week of school; and one novel will be used for an oral report to be presented during the first week of school.
