Oppenheim tells a good story - a little romance, a little adventure - turn of the century tales of success and failure, gain and loss. A best-selling British author, E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946) published over 150 books and countless magazine articles between 1884 and 1946. While most often identified as a mystery writer, Oppenheim's novels range from spy thrillers to romance. All of them have, however, an undertone of intrigue. He was a prolific author and a pioneer of the "thriller" genre.

The wonderful John Dory In these days, the duties of Miss Brown as Peter Ruff's secretary had become multifarious. Together with the transcribing of a vast number of notes concerning cases, some of which he undertook and some of which he refused, she had also to keep his cash book, a note of his investments and a record of his social engagements. Notwithstanding all these demands upon her time, however, there were occasions when she found herself, of necessity, idle. In one of these she broached the subject which had often been in her mind. They were alone, and not expecting callers. Consequently, she sat upon the hearthrug and addressed her employer by his Christian name. "Peter, she said softly, "do you remember the night when you came through the fog and burst into my little flat?"

DELILAH FROM STREATHAM
P ETER R UFF AND THE D OUBLE F OUR I. Introducing Mr. Peter Ruff II. A new career III. Vincent Cawdor, commission agent IV. The indiscretion of Letty Shaw V. Delilah from Streatham VI. The little lady from Servia VII. The demand of the Double Four VIII. Mrs. Bognor's star boarder IX. The perfidy of Miss Brown X. The wonderful John Dory It was a favourite theory with Peter Ruff that the morning papers received very insufficient consideration from the majority of the British public. A glance at the headlines and a few of the spiciest paragraphs, a vague look at the leading article, and the sheets were thrown away to make room for more interesting literature. It was not so with Peter Ruff. Novels he very seldom read — he did not, in fact, appreciate the necessity for their existence. The whole epitome of modern life was, he argued, to be found among the columns of the daily press. The police news, perhaps, was his favourite study, but he did not neglect the advertisements. It followed, therefore, as a matter of course, that the appeal of "M" in the personal column of the Daily Mail Mr. Spencer Fitzgerald, if still in England, is requested to communicate with "M," at Vagali's Library, Cook's Alley, Ledham Street, Soho.

abin, Monsieur . The sinister Continental Mr. Sabin was introduced in E. Phillips Oppenheim's The Mysterious Mister Sabin (1898) and was brought back out of retirement in The Yellow Ribbon (1903). Oppenheim (1866-1946) was an English author who wrote 116 novels and 39 short story collections, most about mystery, crime, and international intrigue; although called "the Prince of Storytellers" during his lifetime, his output is of almost uniformly low quality, and in personality Oppenheim was vile. Sabin then travels to England and goes in search of the plans to England's defenses. (Mention is made of the "electrical destruction machines" and "electrical contrivances," including "electric mines," that Sabin has invented in secret labs in America, but England's defenses are too strong, it would seem, for those). Germany plans to provoke England into war over African colonial issues and then invade the Home Islands, but first it must have the plans to the islands' defenses; even though Oppenheim makes a point of saying that the British fleet is very weak, its ships poorly designed, the coastal defenses enfeebled, and the British Navy and Army are overextended guarding the Empire across the world, the plans absolutelypositively must be secured.
