Mr. Fitzgerald bowed assent. "I am cashier at Howell & Wilson's in Cheapside," he said. "We sell a great many books there — as many, I should think, as any retail establishment in London." "Indeed!" Mrs. Barnes purred. "Very interesting work, I am sure. So nice and intellectual, too; for, of course, you must be looking inside them sometimes."

The little lady from Servia VII. The demand of the Double Four VIII. Mrs. Bognor's star boarder IX. The perfidy of Miss Brown X. The wonderful John Dory It was a favourite theory with Peter Ruff that the morning papers received very insufficient consideration from the majority of the British public. A glance at the headlines and a few of the spiciest paragraphs, a vague look at the leading article, and the sheets were thrown away to make room for more interesting literature. It was not so with Peter Ruff. Novels he very seldom read — he did not, in fact, appreciate the necessity for their existence. The whole epitome of modern life was, he argued, to be found among the columns of the daily press. The police news, perhaps, was his favourite study, but he did not neglect the advertisements. It followed, therefore, as a matter of course, that the appeal of "M" in the personal column of the Daily Mail Mr. Spencer Fitzgerald, if still in England, is requested to communicate with "M," at Vagali's Library, Cook's Alley, Ledham Street, Soho.

Authors, Artists and other Creative Categories E. Phillips Oppenheim British Mystery Writer Best-selling English Novelist Ink Autograph! C-312. Oppenheim was born in London and achieved great success as a best-selling author who penned over 150 books, plays and short stories during an incredible career. He published his first novel, Expiation , in 1866 and went on to write The Long Arm of Mannister, The Moving Finger, The Great Impersonation and many others. He passed away in 1946, one of the most successful British authors of his time. This is an ink autograph on a small album page. A small typed bio is affixed below the signature, but can easily matte out if desired. A light vertical crease runs through center, tiny tear top border doesn't affect. Advertisement document.write(''); These 2002 discount editions are reprints of the 1936 Odhams Press titles The Mammoth Book of Thrillers, Ghosts and Mysteries and The Great Book of Thrillers . Indeed a number of these large horror anthologies were published in the 30s, collecting much of the best British (and some American), horror, mystery and thriller fiction of the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras. Hutchinson, for example, published the massive (1000+ pages) The Evening Standard Book of Strange Stories A Century of Creepy Stories , and A Century of Ghost Stories . Montague Summers edited his famous The Supernatural Omnibus (1931), Dorothy L. Sayers her Great Short Stories of Detection Mystery and Horror , and John Gawsworth his Creeps series. What can I say, they don't write them like they used to. list of authors gives one a good idea of the quality of the writers presented. Even so, there are some stories by lesser known authors which are also very good. My personal favourite, A.J. Alan's "The Diver," a tale of a haunted diving board at the pool in a men's club, isn't particularly atmospheric or well written, but is interesting for its unique venue and the skeptical character who tells it. There are tales of Voodoo (W.B.Seabrook's "Goat-cry, Girl-cry"), horror at sea (W.H. Hodgson's "The Voice in the Knight"), detection (R. Austin Freeman's early Dr. Thorndyke tale "The Aluminium Dagger" and Baroness Orczy's
