Opinions: MITZI PERDUE: Effect of earthquakes on El Salvador
Scripps Howard News Service
(May 22, 2001 12:08 a.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com ) - If you'd like lessons in faith, courage and backbone, visit one of the world's most beleaguered and most beautiful countries. We're talking about El Salvador, a Massachusetts-size country in Central America. In recent years, El Salvador has endured civil war, Hurricane Mitch and two major earthquakes. The impact of these on the people and on the environment has been heartbreaking. Even so, you can find people who still look to the future with hope. Of the man-made problems, the biggest has been a 12-year civil war. It began in 1980 and cost more than 75,000 lives. In this country of 6.1 million people, few families escaped losing a father, brother or cousin. The war ended in 1992 with the help of United Nations-brokered peace accords. In the years since, Salvadorans have been solving their differences with ballots instead of bullets. They've demonstrated that even the most tormented society can come together, function and even heal. Individuals who a decade ago might have been shooting at each now serve together in the Legislative Assembly.

Opinions: MITZI PERDUE: A wealth of information
NCLIS
Scripps Howard News Service (April 10, 2001 12:05 a.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com ) - You've heard the old question: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Today, imagine a different version of this. Suppose there's a large diamond in your closet. It's the size of your thumbnail and it's worth a fortune. Unfortunately, the diamond is completely out of sight. Somehow it got wedged between a shelf and the wall. You can't see it, and you don't know it's there. The question is: If you don't know about it, does the diamond make you rich? Interestingly, the federal government is up against something similar and, surprisingly, so are we. We are all owners of an extraordinary source of wealth. The trouble is that, like the diamond in the closet, we don't know it's there. This source of wealth is government information. Bob Willard of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) believes that information resources are just as important to national wealth as natural resources, human resources or financial resources. Martha Gould, chairwoman of the commission, adds, "Information content is to wealth generation in the Internet Age as raw materials were to wealth generation in the Industrial Age."

It's a role model for other countries wanting to heal after being ripped apart by civil strife.

MITZI PERDUE: Is Global Warming Real? Yes
(July 28, 1998 1:16 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - Is global warming real? You can find experts who say that it's a clear and present danger. You can also find others who insist that the whole issue isn't worth worrying about. Which of these groups should we believe? Jonathan Overpeck, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has some thoughts on this. First of all, he doesn't have a high level of trust for the opinions of politically motivated people "who are not climate change scientists themselves and therefore lack firsthand knowledge." Conversely, he would be inclined to trust what real climate scientists say. These men and women, he points out, have actually done the research. And more often than not, he adds, they've had their work published, which means it has been reviewed by other knowledgeable scientists. And, according to Overpeck, among these specialists, "There is a strong consensus that global warming is taking place." So the guys who know best say, yes, global warming is taking place. Recently, Overpeck and an international team of 20 researchers worked together to summarize what we know about the climate changes that have taken place in the past 400 years. Their tools included analyzing and reviewing the growth of tree rings, examining lake sediments, studying written records and checking gas bubbles trapped inside glaciers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 11, 2000
Frank And Mitzi Perdue to Give $4 Million
Challenge Grant to Community Foundation to Benefit Nonprofit Agencies on the Lower Shore (SALISBURY, MD) Local business and community leaders Frank and Mitzi Perdue announced today that they will give the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore $4 million to be used for matching grants in an endowment building campaign for local area nonprofit organizations. This is the largest single gift ever made to the Community Foundation in its 16 year history. "This community has given so much to us, and we want to give back, to help a wide variety of charities that are all contributing to the quality of life here on the Shore," said Frank Perdue. "Both Mitzi and I see this challenge grant opportunity as a way to leverage more endowment money for charities here at home, to provide for them today and far into the future." The $4 million gift will be combined with a $2 million grant from the Kresge Foundation to provide a one-to-one dollar match for nonprofit organizations selected to raise endowment funds in partnership with the Community Foundation. That means for every dollar raised by nonprofit organizations, the Perdues and the Kresge Foundation will give an additional dollar to the agencies' endowment funds. The successful completion of the Perdue Kresge Challenge will provide $12 million in new endowment funds for local non profit agencies.

(Salisbury, MD) The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan, has selected the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore as one of only six community foundations nationwide to receive $3 million in the Kresge Partnership to Raise Community Capital program. The first phase of the Kresge Challenge has been completed, with the Kresge Foundation providing a $1 million dollar match to the Foundation's Lower Shore Fund for Community Needs. In the second phase, now under way, Kresge offers $2 million in endowments held by the Community Foundation for nonprofit organizations selected to participate. Local philantropists Frank and Mitzi Perdue pledged an additional $4 million to the second phase of the campaign, which kicked off in January 2002.

Mitzi Perdue, Chicken Mogul's Wife, Has Her Own Form of Eggscape
By Linell Smith, The Baltimore Sun
Not only is Mitzi Perdue tolerant of all the chicken jokes, she says she and her husband, chicken magnate Frank Perdue, actually enjoy them. It's a good thing, too: These days, people toss egg jokes her way as well.
Mitzi Perdue has been making a name for herself as an egg artist. She has become quite accomplished (an eggs-pert, she's heard more than once) at crafting intricate miniature worlds inside emu, rhea and ostrich eggs.
"Frank and I joke that we compete to see who can produce the most eggs in a week," Mrs. Perdue says. "He can produce 20 million and I can usually do one. So far, he's ahead. But I joke that mine have value added."
Many, in fact, are decorated with jewels a detail which makes them appear Faberge-inspired. They have been shown at the Ward Museum in Salisbury, Md., and in a traveling exhibit mounted by the National Agricultural Library. Now the Maryland Historical Society has assembled 61 of her Eggscapes as Mrs. Perdue has named them as the core of an exhibit of eggs handcrafted in Maryland.
Mrs. Perdue creates fantasy snow scenes and homey interiors, glimpses of Christmas mornings and calm Constable-like pastures. There are sparkling fairies, tiny ice skaters, forest creatures, figures from Greek mythology. "I guess you'd say that my specialty is creating reality-free worlds," the 55-year-old artist says.

NEW BEDFORD A good cedar picket fence made for two furious neighbors Sunday afternoon one of them a city councilor. Robert Frost's poem aside, the tension stems from a disfigured rhododendron.
The battle began when Michael Murray, preparing to install his new fence, chopped down half the rhododendron, which is rooted in his neighbor's Robeson Street property but had protruded into his own yard.
The aggrieved neighbor, City Council President George Rogers, did not take kindly to the assault on his beloved bush, 40 years old and 12 feet tall.

In January 1952 at the Boston Poultry Show, a few people met informally and organized a committee to discuss the possible formation of a poultry historical organization. In June of 1952 this committee met in New York City and organized the American Poultry Historical Society (APHS). It was subsequently incorporated under Illinois laws as a non-profit organization. The stated purpose of the APHS was to find, collect, and preserve records, printed materials, and other objects connected with the development of the poultry industry in America, to make available its great history to this and future generations, and to recognize and honor persons for outstanding achievement or leadership in the industry. To carry out the objectives of the Society, the following program was developed:
  • Obtain valuable historical objects and pictures and assure their permanent protection in appropriate archives.
Provide facilities for the suitable display and preservation of all historical material obtained.
