http://home.hccnet.nl/e.van.ruitenbeek/leiden.html

45. Gestuntel Met Pilgrim Fathers-imago
Auteur Eric Krebbers. Gestuntel met Pilgrim Fathersimago. De voorvaderenvan de Amerikaanse elite, de Pilgrim Fathers, woonden in Leiden.
http://www.gebladerte.nl/10090l05.htm

Some Notes on Plymouth - by a visitor - 1884 From a pamphlet dating from 1906 A while ago a kindly fate decreed me a brief holiday in Plymouth, the ''Mother Plymouth sitting by the sea'', which Elihu Burritt apostrophises so eloquently and so affectionately in one of his charming books. The veritable Plymouth of those old gallants, Drake, Hawkins, Raleigh, Frobisher, and Seymour, who made history so notably, in the days of good Queen Bess, in this far away corner of Britain. The Imperial Plymouth whose shores have witnessed the coming and going of kings and heroes, all down the long vista of the ages; the Plymouth which is greatly concerned to obey the old mandate - ''Keepe then the sea, about in special,
Which of England is the town wall;
Keepe then the sea, that is the wall of England,
And then is England kept by Goddes hand.''
''Keepe then the sea.''
The cry is as old as Agincourt, and still it is the last word of modern statesmanship.

"The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers"
The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers
The breaking waves dash'd high
On a stern and rock-bound coast,
And the woods against a stormy sky
Their giant branches toss'd; And the heavy night hung dark,
The hills and waters o'er,
When a band of exiles moor'd their bark
On the wild New England shore. Not as the conqueror comes,
They, the true-hearted, came;
Not with the roll of the stirring drums,
And the trumpet that sings of fame; Not as the flying come, In silence and in fear;- They shook the depths of the desert gloom With their hymns of lofty cheer. Amidst the storm they sang, And the stars heard and the sea: And the sounding aisles of the dim woods rang To the anthem of the free! The ocean eagle soar'd From his nest by the white wave's foam And the rocking pines of the forest roar'd- This was their welcome home! There were men with hoary hair Amidst that pilgrim band:- Why had they come to wither there, Away from their childhood's land?

Chapter 16 The Pilgrim Fathers T HE English Reformers, while renouncing the doctrines of Romanism, had retained many of its forms. Thus though the authority and the creed of Rome were rejected, not a few of her customs and ceremonies were incorporated into the worship of the Church of England. It was claimed that these things were not matters of conscience; that though they were not commanded in Scripture, and hence were nonessential, yet not being forbidden, they were not intrinsically evil. Their observance tended to narrow the gulf which separated the reformed churches from Rome, and it was urged that they would promote the acceptance of the Protestant faith by Romanists. To the conservative and compromising, these arguments seemed conclusive. But there was another class that did not so judge. The fact that these customs "tended to bridge over the chasm between Rome and the Reformation" (Martyn, volume 5, page 22), was in their view a conclusive argument against retaining them. They looked upon them as badges of the slavery from which they had been delivered and to which they had no disposition to return. They reasoned that God has in His word established the regulations governing His worship, and that men are not at liberty to add to these or to detract from them. The very beginning of the great apostasy was in seeking to supplement the authority of God by that of the church. Rome began by enjoining what God had not forbidden, and she ended by forbidding what He had explicitly enjoined.

Delfshaven and Records of the
Pilgrim Fathers

As presented in the Holland Society Yearbook 1898:
Through the courtesy of the Secretary of State, at Washington, President Vrooman (of the Holland Society), received an advance sheet of a consular report which will be of interest to our members, and is therefore herewith published. Consul Listoe sends from Rotterdam, under date of February 12, 1898, a description of the town whence the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Holland to America. Consular reports, it should be noted, are usually limited to commercial and industrial subjects; but, in view of the general interest of this subject (the consul says he has received several requests from America for copies of the church records herein given), an exception is made in this case.
The report is as follows:
One of the points within this consular district possessing most interest for citizens of the United States is undoubtedly the ancient town of Delfshaven, situated on the river Maas (Meuse), a couple of miles below Rotterdam, and, in fact, now a part of this city. The town derives its name (Haven: harbor) from the fact that it formerly was the seaport for the city of Delft, once an important city, where William the Silent - the liberator of the Netherlands - and most of his descendants lie buried, and in later years famous for its manufacture of the decorated porcelain known as delftware. Delft is located eight miles inland from its "haven", on the river Schie, which empties into the Maas.

http://www.logon.org and http://www.ccg.org The Dutch Connection of the Pilgrim Fathers There is a very small margin if one ever exists between politics and religion. How much difference has there been through the ages between religion and politics? History if it becomes the justification of religion, is a monumental lie when it is written to prove an idea or to defend politics. We have a commission to tell the truth concerning history. This means that we have the obligation to research history and consider all the facets involved. It is clear that we then uncover facts that are not always appreciated very much. Especially when the truth closes in. We know that the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant churches have written history to justify their religions and to condemn all the others, especially the Sabbath-keeping churches.
