Pilgrim Fathers in the Netherlands
By Jan Kijlstra
One of the nice things of the MMD, in my humble opinion, is the fact that the editors are open-minded, thus allowing side-step topics to its members. I would like to make such a side step, because some time ago an article in my daily newspaper gave some information which may be of interest. It's about America's history. And is the MMD not also highly involved with history, at least partly? [ Sure! Our instruments are pure history! Robbie The city of Leiden, the town where the Pilgrim Fathers lived for several years before sailing to what was to become the USA, has opened the new building of the city-archives. In these archives a lot of information about the Pilgrim Fathers is at hand, and a good deal of it is in English. On the occasion of this opening a new web site was created, where over 300 official documents about these group of English refugees can be found: http://www.leiden.nl/gemeentearchief

November 22, 2001 I just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. ( If you're not an American, just pretend, okay? Man, you foreigners are a bunch of killjoys... ) It seems strange now to think of the things we have to be thankful for. They seem so conditional, being thankful for having your family alive and well when so many loved ones have been lost in recent events, or to be grateful for your community remaining unscathed when others have been so deeply scarred, and more live in fear. (A 94 year-old woman died of inhalation anthrax a few days ago, not ten miles from New Haven, and as yet no one knows why.) Thankful for peace? Is there peace in your world? I don't have any answers for you, I am feeling the weight of the world like the rest of you. My personal anxiety over losing my job only adds to what we're all feeling right now. I think the key for me, and maybe it'll work for you, is to start small and try to build on little gratitudes. Let me think about this for a second. Apparently Schuyler won a turkey at day care yesterday. I have no idea how; I assume there's no gambling going on amongst the chubbins, but you never know what goes on between the cribs at these places. When I was putting on her jacket, one of the hateful women who works there told me, in her delightful broken English, that the turkey in Schuyler's little cubby hole was hers. Thinking it was some sort of weird, macaroni-based art project, I went to grab it on my way out, only to discover that it was in fact an actual big, real, thirteen pound, raw dead turkey, like what you might find in your grocer's big dead bird section. Schuyler was making fast for the door, so I didn't have time to find out why my two-year-old daughter was bringing home a frozen dead animal.

The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers in America
The breaking waves dash'd high On a stern and rock-bound coast, And the woods against a stormy sky Their giant branches toss'd; And the heavy night hung dark, The hills and waters o'er, When a band of exiles moor'd their bark On the wild New England shore. Not as the conqueror comes, They, the true-hearted, came; Not with the roll of the stirring drums, And the trumpet that sings of fame; Not as the flying come, In silence and in fear; They shook the depths of the desert gloom With their hymns of lofty cheer. Amidst the storm they sang, And the stars heard and the sea: And the sounding aisles of the dim woods rang To the anthem of the free! The ocean eagle soar'd From his nest by the white wave's foam And the rocking pines of the forest roar'd This was their welcome home! There were men with hoary hair Amidst that pilgrim band: Why had they come to wither there, Away from their childhood's land? There was woman's fearless eye, Lit by her deep love's truth; There was manhood's brow serenely high, And the fiery heart of youth.

A new £1.5m project to build a full sized replica of the Mayflower ship has been unveiled. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers left England in the Mayflower and crossed the Atlantic to reach the shores of the New World. Plans are under way to build a replica of the famous three-masted vessel and base it in Plymouth - the port where the ship began her journey almost 400 years ago. The two men behind the scheme hope she will draw tourists to the city while she is being built and prove a popular attraction once completed.

PILGRIM FATHERS
Brian Moseley's PLYMOUTH DATA Website www.plymouthdata.info The group that much later became known as the Pilgrim Fathers were separatists from the Church of England. They came from Nottinghamshire and left the Church of England in 1606 to form their own church. Because of continued persecution by the authorities, the congregation fled to Holland, where, in Leiden, they found the toleration they sought to worship as they chose. Although they remained here for some eleven years, conditions were poor and they realised that their children were growing up to be Dutch rather than English so they decided with the backing of a consortium of London merchants to emigrate to the English colonies in north America, then known collectively as Virginia after the virgin queen, Elizabeth I. The "Mayflower" was a 180-ton vessel that had been previously employed in the shipment of wine. She was about 12-years-old when the leader of the Separatist congregation at Leiden in Holland, Mr John Carver, chartered her for a voyage to America. The ship was prepared for the voyage at Southampton, England. It is curious that the ship was not mentioned by name in William Bradford's famous account of the voyage, nor has she been described. In the meantime, another vessel, the 60-ton "Speedwell" set sail from the port of Delftshaven amid tears and prayers on July 22nd 1620 with 35 members of the congregation and their leaders, William Bradford and William Brewster. They joined the "Mayflower" and the English Separatists at Southampton, from where they sailed on August 5th 1620 with about 120 passengers between them.

I Padri Pellegrini

Anzi, i
