The various members of the group had broken away from the Church of England , feeling that the Church had not completed the task begun by the Reformation . Under the guidance of the Reverends William Brewster and Richard Clifton , a portion of the group left their home in Scrooby, England and sailed to Amsterdam to escape religious persecution at the hands of their countrymen. According to Alderman Pechtold (culture), not so much. That's why permanent attention will be given to these religious refugees in a special area in the Municipal Archives, soon. With documents, letters, and legal items in exhibit cases, but also with a "virtual" walking tour through the history of the Pilgrim Fathers. In addition, the center is intended to satisfy the growing request, primarily from the U.S., for information about the ancestors of a part of the present American population. During the presentation of the plans this morning, it appeared that the archive's website receives around 5,000 visits per month. Most of these visitors are from America, the land where the Pilgrim Fathers sought refuge in the 17th century, because they feared the "Dutchification" of their children. Even more reason, according to Pechtold, for providing good electronic information. "Time and again there's negative publicity for Leiden concerning the Pilgrim Fathers. If demolition of the wall remains of the Vrouwekerk is discussed, I'm approached by the news media from America. With this website, we display all the information and the visitors themselves must determine if the wall remains of the Walloon church are where Pilgrim Fathers were married once upon a time, or whether or not it is in fact American heritage."

The handblown glass accurately forecasts weather hours in advance. Fill with colored water and check the weather by looking at the level of the liquid in the spout. A high water level in the spout indicates a low pressure area: approaching storm. A low level indicated high pressure: nice, fair weather. When I mention in my email: "from Leiden, The Pilgrim Fathers City" I got many heartwarming, proudly!, replies:" my family were descendants of the Pilgrims Fathers"! The CRIPPEN - CRIPPIN Connection Contents The foundation of the first British Empire (i.e. of the empire as it existed before 1783) was closely connected with religious divisions in England and the refusal of toleration to Nonconformists by James 1. Elizabethan efforts to found colonies on the eastern coast of North America had been unsuccessful, but a settlement was made in Virginia in 1609, and it attracted the attention of a body of Puritans, belonging to Scrooby and Gainsborough, who had fled from England to Holland. They entered into negotiations with a London Company to which the Virginia Company had ceded some of its rights, and obtained permission to found a colony near the mouth of the Hudson River. The English Government put no obstacles in the way, and the exiles sailed from Delftshaven in July 1620. They called at Southampton, from which on 5 th August, 120 of their number sailed for America in the Mayflower and the Speedwell . The last-named vessel was compelled to return as unseaworthy, but about 100 left Plymouth on 6th Sept. in the Mayflower. They reached the coast of North America in December, but stress of weather prevented their making for their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson, and they landed in the region of Cape Cod, where they founded the colony of New Plymouth, as "loyal subjects of our dread sovereign, King James" (21st December 1620). Before landing they had drawn up a written constitution for the new colony, agreeing to form themselves into a "body politic," and promising due obedience to laws which they were to draw up. They suffered many hardships on their arrival, and about half their number died in the first winter.

The Pilgrim Fathers
The English Reformers, while renouncing the doctrines of Romanism, had retained many of its forms. Thus though the authority and the creed of Rome were rejected, not a few of her customs and ceremonies were incorporated into the worship of the Church of England. It was claimed that these things were not matters of conscience; that though they were not commanded in Scripture, and hence were nonessential, yet not being forbidden, they were not intrinsically evil. Their observance tended to narrow the gulf which separated the reformed churches from Rome, and it was urged that they would promote the acceptance of the Protestant faith by Romanists. To the conservative and compromising, these arguments seemed conclusive. But there was another class that did not so judge. The fact that these customs "tended to bridge over the chasm between Rome and the Reformation" (Martyn, volume 5, page 22), was in their view a conclusive argument against retaining them. They looked upon them as badges of the slavery from which they had been delivered and to which they had no disposition to return. They reasoned that God has in His word established the regulations governing His worship, and that men are not at liberty to add to these or to detract from them. The very beginning of the great apostasy was in seeking to supplement the authority of God by Page 290 that of the church. Rome began by enjoining what God had not forbidden, and she ended by forbidding what He had explicitly enjoined.

The Progress in Chemical Oceanography (PICO) III meeting in September 1999 was the inspiration for this page. The pictures were taken during that meeting.
Plymouth is a town in Devon, on the South West coast of the U.K. To most people in the U.K. and the U.S., Plymouth sounds familiar because many great voyages have begun here. Sir Francis Drake (one-time mayor of the city) set off from here, as did Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir John Hawkins. And, of course, the Pilgrim Fathers.
The Barbican, the oldest part of the city, dates back to those times of the Pilgrim Fathers, Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada. The name "barbican" refers to castle or military architecture . It is a defense structure, also known as forecourt or forebuilding.
Plymouth was heavily damaged during the blitz, just like Rotterdam in The Netherlands. It has therefore many new buildings and a modern appearance. A large part of the city center has recently been turned into pedestrian-only areas. Plymouth also has an impressive collection of institutes and university buildings.
It may come as a surprise to learn that the climate is fairly mild in Plymouth. Would you have expected palm trees in Plymouth?
