About Erik Max Francis In
Information Information about me. About Erik Max Francis. Here's some random information about me, in no particular order:
  • I live in San Jose, California. Before I moved here in the 1987, I lived on the East Coast in Connecticut and rural New York.
  • I have strong political views, but prefer not to get into political discussions (they rarely accomplish anything other than getting everyone involved more upset). I could be best described as liberal on domestic issues, and conservative when it comes to foreign policy, but there is some overlap. I certainly would not label myself as either a Democrat or Republican.
  • I'm a programmer by profession; I work exclusively on Unix and Unix-like systems. The operating systems I work on most frequently are Linux and Solaris . The languages I enjoy using the most for large projects are C++ and Python (leaning more and more toward Python as time progresses), though I know C extensively, appreciate Java, often use shell scripts, frequently take advantage of , and fairly reluctantly have been known to use Perl . I'm familiar with, although not really proficient, in a variety of other languages, including Forth, Lisp, Logo, Prolog, and Scheme; I make it a point to learn new languages whenever possible. In fact

Francis recalls many changes over the years
By TOM SCHNEIDER
Daily Press Staff Writer
A lot of things have changed in the years that Elliot Francis has lived in and around Artesia. "My grandfather started that garage in 1922 with his four sons," said Francis. "And then my father joined him in 1935." The building was fairly distinctive, becoming something of a local landmark. "It was noted for its many deer horns," he said. "It had 365 deer horns around the top of the building and on the ceiling. Most of those deer were shot by my grandfather and his family." It became a sort of headquarters for the "mountain people" from west of Artesia. "People who lived in the mountains would come down to town and loaf at the garage," said Francis. "Then my grandfather would have them up to his house for dinner. Some of them would bring their bedrolls, and then sleep in the garage at night." Francis remembers many of the old characters that used to frequent the garage, many of them from the very earliest days of the town.

Family Wants To Bring
Lost Bird Home
Eagle Butte News (Cheyenne River Rez, SD), Nov. 2, 1995, p. 16
A family reunion, so to speak, took place at the Dupree district #1 Community Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 25, with attendees coming from as far as Belle Fourche, Sisseton and St. Francis. A main topic of conversation at the gathering was Lost Bird, an infant survivor of the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. After being taken from the massacre site by General Leonard Colby, she was adopted and raised by his non-Indian family and spent much of her adult life searching for her biological parents in South Dakota. She died in California in 1920. Through media sources the Crane-Pretty Voice families have heard it said that Lost Bird had no relatives and this troubled them since they know it to be untrue. The relatives are here on Cheyenne River and they are interested in setting the record straight. They would also like to see the body of Lost Bird (which was searched for, repatriated and reburied at the Wounded Knee Memorial mass gravesite in 1991) returned to the Bridger area where the biological mother and father are buried. Some of the direct descendents of Lost Bird who live in the area are Angeline Bear Eagle Taylor and her brother Matthew Bear Eagle, who are grandchildren of Walter Joe Crane Pretty Voice, a brother of Lost Bird. He (Joe) and his wife Emma (Bissonette) provided a home for Julia Rock Crane Pretty Voice who was Lost Bird's mother. Other direct descendants are Virginia Crane Pretty Voice Ozuna, daughter of Walter Joe Crane Pretty Voice; Virginia's sister Dorothy Crane Pretty Voice Alvarez; Frieda Holy Bull Condon, Gary Holy Bull and Curtis Circle Bear are grandchildren of Sophia Crane Pretty Voice Holy Bull, sister of Lost Bird.

Dr. Francis Collins
Krulwich:
There's an analogy I was given that Mozart would sometimes compose music [such that] you would put the sheet of music in front of you and you read from the top to the bottom. You'd play a beautiful tune. Then you could take the music and simply turn it upside down and read it in what is in effect a mirror image and play another beautiful tune.
Collins: That sounds apocryphal to me, but it's a great story.
Krulwich: Is that the sort of thing? That is, depending upon how you read the genes you can get different end products?
Collins: Maybe think of it more as if you are reading a mystery novel, and there are several chapters, and you could pull some out or stick others in. People actually write novels of this sort. You can make the ending different if you get sick of that particular one. There's an alternative way to substitute a few pages here and there.
That's sort of what the gene is doing. You read it one way and you get this ending; you change around a few chapters, a different guy did it. It's the same kind of parallel. You have enough information there to code for several possible outcomes.
Krulwich: What does folding have to do with it?

Top TV award goes to Royal dresser Clare.
A Prize of £10,000 has been awarded to a Simonstone-based company which has two young royals among its customers.
Clare Francis, managing director of Pretty Ponies Ltd, won the 'Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award' as part of Granada Television's 'Flying Start' programme. The Company has a staff of 15 and manufactures and sells designer clothes for horse riders, some of which have been worn by Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Business-minded Clare applied to take part in the programme and later heard she was one of three finalists for the award.
She attended the final presentation and was stunned to hear she had won. Clare's fascination with horses began when she was young and she went on to ride in shows both locally and nationally. Her initial venture into business involved making horses' brow bands to sell on a stall at horse shows. She soon wanted to expand and start making the riding jackets, jodhpurs and ties which had not been available when she was very young.

http://www.caryn.com/francis/francis-bio.html
Francis's Life Story Francis began his life as a cute little mutt sometime in 1992 (we think). He is half Great Dane and half Black Lab. We never knew which half was which, but one day, we met another male Black Lab/Dane mix who was much bigger than Francis (believe it or not!!) so we have decided that Francis's mom was the Great Dane. (As a noteFrancis, who has serious macho tendencies when it comes to getting along with other boys, greeted that dog as if he were his long-lost brother; we were certain that the dogs recognized their similarities). Francis was a homeless little puppy who lived at the beach, often, we're sad to report, suffering at the hands of some abusive human(s) (at least, that's what we think based on his behavior around strangershe's OK with women but hides under tables at the sight of men, especially if they are big). When he was found, he had broken ribs, a broken leg, and had lacerations on his head from where bottles were crashed on it. Had he been taken to a shelter, he might never have gotten out, but fortunately, he was rescued by a private group, who placed him through a word-of-mouth placement network within the entertainment industry. This is how, about a year and a half into his puppyhood, Kristen came into Francis's life, and he moved from LA's southern beaches to Hollywood's Runyon Canyon, until Mommy decided to move back to the beach, right alongside the Venice Canals. This was great fun. After all, the Canals have plenty of ducks and kitty cats to chase, and Mommy's dead bolt on her door was no match for a smart, determined doggie, especially one high on the smell of kitty cats, so Francis was pretty much able to let himself out at will. This made Francis quite the neighborhood fixture, dancing along to his very own tune of "Oh, there goes that black dog again..." Since he is so fast, the only way to get him to come back was to find another dog on the street, and give this dog all the attention while Francis watched. He'd last about 2 seconds before running over to see if he could get in on the action. Once he began

A Dog Day Afternoon at the Movies Francis and I got to do a film together this past summeran independent feature filmed in Venice, CA
directed by Drew Ann Rosenberg, entitled The Dog People . It's kind of a 1984 for dogs where the dog
people are suppressed by the anti-dog people and one woman rises to buck the system. Remarkably
enough, Francis listened to directions for every take! What a ham guess he saves his perfect
performances for the camerawho knew?! (His selective listening skills are legendary in the annals of dogdom ) Anyhow, for those of you unfamilar with the process of making of movie...here's a glimpse of what goes into making a few minutes of what you see on screen. All links on this page take you to a RealVideo clip of the action. You will need the RealPlayer to view these clips. For info on how to get this and all the other goodies you need for any site at Caryn.com, please visit our Tools Area f or additional assistance. A Take is another name for a chance to get it right. With indie films, time is money (that you don't have) so ideally you'd like everything to be perfect on the first try. Not to mention that if you're oh, say, a little lacking in the permit department from the city, you'd better be quick enough to get out of there before the cops show up! Now the first shot establishes a sense of place a Master shot filmed from the top of a building looking down on the street gives an overview of the action of the scene. I received instructions from the director via walkie-talkie from a nearby hidden crew member!

MISTRESS MARY QUITE CONTRARY
Mary had liked to look at her mother from a distance and she had thought her very pretty, but as she knew very little of her she could scarcely have been expected to love her or to miss her very much when she was gone. She did not miss her at all, in fact, and as she was a self-absorbed child she gave her entire thought to herself, as she had always done. If she had been older she would no doubt have been very anxious at being left alone in the world, but she was very young, and as she had always been taken care of, she supposed she always would be. What she thought was that she would like to know if she was going to nice people, who would be polite to her and give her her own way as her Ayah and the other native servants had done.
She knew that she was not going to stay at the English clergyman's house where she was taken at first. She did not want to stay. The English clergyman was poor and he had five children nearly all the same age and they wore shabby clothes and were always quarreling and snatching toys from each other. Mary hated their untidy bungalow and was so disagreeable to them that after the first day or two nobody would play with her. By the second day they had given her a nickname which made her furious.
It was Basil who thought of it first. Basil was a little boy with impudent blue eyes and a turned-up nose, and Mary hated him. She was playing by herself under a tree, just as she had been playing the day the cholera broke out. She was making heaps of earth and paths for a garden and Basil came and stood near to watch her. Presently he got rather interested and suddenly made a suggestion.

CHAPTER I
THERE IS NO ONE LEFT
One frightfully hot morning, when she was about nine years old, she awakened feeling very cross, and she became crosser still when she saw that the servant who stood by her bedside was not her Ayah.
"Why did you come?" she said to the strange woman. "I will not let you stay. Send my Ayah to me."
The woman looked frightened, but she only stammered that the Ayah could not come and when Mary threw herself into a passion and beat and kicked her, she looked only more frightened and repeated that it was not possible for the Ayah to come to Missie Sahib.
There was something mysterious in the air that morning. Nothing was done in its regular order and several of the native servants seemed missing, while those whom Mary saw slunk or hurried about with ashy and scared faces. But no one would tell her anything and her Ayah did not come. She was actually left alone as the morning went on, and at last she wandered out into the garden and began to play by herself under a tree near the veranda. She pretended that she was making a flower-bed, and she stuck big scarlet hibiscus blossoms into little heaps of earth, all the time growing more and more angry and muttering to herself the things she would say and the names she would call Saidie when she returned.
"Pig! Pig! Daughter of Pigs!" she said, because to call a native a pig is the worst insult of all.

Avante Garde Golfer
A Journal of new ideas in the world of golf - published quarterly for the avant garde golfer
Spring Quarter 2010 BOOK REVIEW: FICTION The Bunker Murders, by Sal Lindstrom Random House; 340 pages. $24.95 Click here for information about illustrating this article Just when you thought golf was a safe sport (compared, say, to stock car racing or bungee jumping), along comes Sal Lindstrom and his fifth novel, "The Bunker Murders." It is likely the average non-golfer, hearing only the title, would conjure up a tale about murder in war time bunkers. But a glance at the cover art reveals Lindstrom's milieu: a large golf bunker with a bomb fuse poking up from the sand. Very clever, and as a golfer you are instantly hooked (of course the explosive devices used in the novel are far more sophisticated than the old fuse variety). A psychopath of sorts is out to harm, if not destroy, golf in the Phoenix area, and perhaps the entire country. Without revealing too much of the plot, suffice to say he/she is able to plant some very sophisticated land mines in bunkers of selected resort courses. The first one kills a golf club maintenance man one fine October day, just at the beginning of Arizona golf's high season. The murder is hushed up as the local police investigate, but they really have nothing to go on. Disgruntled employee? Angry Gulf War vet? All the usual suspects, but this early in the plot you know none is likely responsible. A few days later an out of town banker is blown apart as he sets up for a routine sand shot. This bit of fireworks occurs mid morning, and before his horrified playing partners. The golf course (Scottsdale's toniest, of course) is closed indefinitely, and the story makes page one. The FBI is called in, and here we meet the novel's protagonist, Carl Nathanson, golfer and all around super agent. Like most fictional crime heroes, he is resourceful and smart enough to know when to go for it and when to lay up.
