FEATURED ARTIST FOR SEPTEMBER 2001 FRANCIS MANAPUL
I'm pretty much self-taught but along the way I did have a lot of help from some friends who are awesome artists. I used to be a part of this small art club in Toronto and being around other artists all day helped me quite a bit. Even after moving on, I remained friends with a lot of the guys from that place, and we continue to help each other out.
WITCHBLADE - This double-page spread is from WITCHBLADE #48.
I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Paul Jenkins himself,
who produced a great story to illustrate.
DUSK - This is a creator-owned project
I've been developing with J. Torres over
the past year or so. It's a fantasy piece with multicultural legends and myths thrown
in the usual mix.

A Work In Progress
History is nothing more than a vast collection of todays.
Main January 31, 2003 Lighten Up, Francis I know, I know. Thanks to all who have expressed concern. Here is how I will start returning these daily ramblings to something a little more "well rounded:" There is a new microwave oven, supplied by an upper manager, on a table in my office. The table is about ten feet from my desk. There is a box, right now, on my desk. Inside that box is one last Krispy Kreme. I bought them yesterday. Next to the box, on my desk, is one last napkin. I will pause, now, to place the doughnut on the napkin. I will walk ten feet. The microwave door will open and close. Approximately eight seconds later, I will return to my cube. Update : Mmm. Box is in the garbage. Napkin is there, too, all wadded up. Remants of melted sugar remain on my fingertips, but not for long. TrackBacks Comments Post a comment Name:

Primus Sucks!
by Audrey Ednalino
In high school I thought I was punk rock with a capital P. But that was all in my head, my own little punk rock fallacy. Reality: I was mostly known for being pathetically inept when it came to the opposite sex. To this day I'm not quite clear whether I was the real dork or if the guys I obsessed over were dorkier than me.
Boy, did I pine over the biggest posers.
One boy in particular, Francis, comes to mind. I had this love-hate thing when it came to him. Either I thought he was The Shit, or I just thought of him as shit.
Basically, Francis was this guy who I thought was pretty cool, and I wanted to get the opportunity to get to know him, but it just never happened. Maybe all my memories are tinged with bitterness, but that's just too bad, isn't it?
Anyhow, initially I noticed Francis because when you live in a place like Bakersfield, finding other Asian faces is pretty much a novelty. And to find someone at my high school that didn't listen to jock rock or cheesy radio music was even more rare. Francis and I went to the same school from junior high up through high school, but we never really had a reason to talk to one another. Not even when we had the same classes senior year, or were on the staff of the school paper the same semester. It's almost as if we did everything within our abilities to avoid each other.
I remember Francis as this lanky Korean skate rat with bangs he always had to push out of his eyes. When we were 15, Francis was the drummer in some band that went by the acronym O:RTK. I later found that this stood for Operation: Right To Know. (Francis was a big government/alien conspiracy theorist.) One of my friends who had French class with Francis told me that he used to write poems about necrophilia in her notebook. In high school he morphed into a "punker than thou" cynic who hung out with a mix of thuggish, gutter dirt punks and hip-hop skater boys. He used to mob through the school parking lot with his friends Ryan and Wes, in his silver pick-up. Francis came off as being really cool in his aloofness and indolence. (I later deduced that this really meant he was a bitch, pure and simple.)

BUILDING THE BRIDGE TO A MORE PEACEFUL FUTURE Paul Wolfowitz Deputy Secretary of Defense Answers to Written Questions from the Floor: Q: As we try to figure out whether we are winning, losing or holding our ground in the war on terror, how do we measure the result of our effort? Has anti-Americanism gone up or down since September 11, and how do our policies with respect to Iraq affect that? How we will we know when the war on terror is over? A: This business of how to measure progress is a difficult one, but it's not going to be measured for a long time by the absence of terrorist attacks. We've seen in Bali that it doesn't take a lot to do one. Although I think there is more behind that kind of network than we may imagine. I do think that those 2,400 people who are off the streets is real progress. The elimination of Afghanistan as a sanctuary for terrorists is real progress. There has been a large number of successes, and not even primarily military ones - although what our military did in Afghanistan is quite remarkable - but this is a war against a secret enemy that hides among us. It is a war fought by intelligence and law enforcement authorities as well. We're making progress, but it's measured by the threats we've blocked and the people we've arrested, and they're obviously still many out there and they're many threats still out there.

Connie Francis is the best female vocalist of all time. She was the top female vocalist of the late 50's and early 60's, amassing records sales equal to and surpass those of many of her male contemporaries. Connie Francis branched into big band, country, ethnic, and many many other styles of music. She has the knack of wrenching the emotions with her powerhouse voice. Connie's music, transcending any and all boundaries, is capable of taming the beast, soothing the wounded heart and lifting the fallen spirit. She uses her multifaceted talents to successfully perform concerts each year. Concetta Rosemarie Franconero was born on a December 12 in Newark, New Jersey. Connie started performing as a child playing an accordion. Her ability to play an accordion was key for her being accepted on Startime, a New York City television show that featured talented children singers and performers. The show had no one else to play an accordion. After three weeks, producer George Scheck (and later her manager) told her to dump the accordion and concentrate on singing. Connie performed on Startime weekly for four years. After Startime, Connie made demo records for MGM. George Scheck later shuddered (as her manager and with Connie selling millions of records) that he almost at first didn't accept her..

I'm going to become a soccer mom this fall! Thanks, Joseph, I couldn't join this crucial demographic without you! [remind me to post Joseph's wildlife biologist speech here!]
this is all very old stuff...
Midnight at the Well of Souls now that's pretty grown up. Liked it, too. Things are just different around the house since Tyler left us, but we are having some pretty big fun by ourselves. See the AHA! page for some oddments... We are reading the first Harry Potter book. I recommend this to all of you big people too. It's *GREAT*. I would put it up there with the Phantom Tollbooth, Willy Wonka, and some of the other slightly odd classics. Joseph's favorite steamer flavor is almond. Takes after his mom and Uncle Dykki. Joseph's new room is twice as big I moved our old home office into my bedroom, and our friend Jasmine has moved into the small bedroom, doing worktrade, afterschool care for rent. Jasmine was Joseph's favorite sitter, and I think this has made life easier for both of us Thanks, Jas!

50. Inappropriate Fan Mail : Peter Beard's Portraits Of Francis Bacon
Dear Peter Beard's Portraits of Francis Bacon Peter got to take the photos sincehe was so handsome and Bacon was Pretty responsive to that sort of thing.
http://www.harpold.com/fanmail/bofb.html
this is one of my favorites but not my actual favorite
these are just neat.
Dear Peter Beard's Portraits of Francis Bacon: You combine so many things I love. But I might not ever own one, so I thought I'd send this letter as a testament to my fondness. Peter got to take the photos since he was so handsome and Bacon was pretty responsive to that sort of thing. I think Peter's still in the recuperating phase of his life, it's pretty hard to bounce back from being gored by a rhino. I like a lot of his work, but the Bacon portraits are my favorite, and not just because they're supermodel free. It's quiet dignity and weird rapport that Bacon has with the camera that both illuminates and removes all the concpetions you might have when you see a photo of the man who made all those great paintings. Francis, well, everyone knows why I like his work, even though rumor has it he was a mean mean guy. It just turns out that a lot of really talented people aren't particularly kind. Some are though, so it's better to look at the images rather than have him over and get to know him. I'll be putting my energy in to knowing the nice people, but when it comes to appreciating the oeuvre of someone, I don't really discriminate. I just like good oeuvre. Who doesn't? Francis painted portraits of Peter too, but the thing is - it doesn't carry quite the same magic for me. But I like he reciprocity of it all.

      Best of both worlds
Francis and Yao will try to mesh for success
      By JONATHAN FEIGEN
Yao Ming made himself comfortable in the passenger seat of Steve Francis' new Hum-vee, or at least as comfortable as that much passenger can be in a vehicle built to approximate a shiny tank. They talked about basketball. They talked about China. They talked. "I love him," Francis reported just two days later. "I know he's younger than me, but I think he's my big brother already." The Americanization of Yao Ming had begun. But in many ways, it did not start when he landed a week ago in Houston or a month ago when he arrived in North America to begin preparations for the World Basketball Championships. China has changed, and so has its exports. When Yao met with Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich in Oakland in August with every member of the Chinese national team lined up on an escalator heading in the other direction but twisting around to watch Yao wore huge, red "We R One" shorts. He said this week he had no idea his clothes were designed and made by the company Francis, Nick Van Exel and Sam Cassell co-own. He also had no idea where he got them.

from "The Wheel" by Robert Hunter / Jerry Garcia Printer-Friendly Version of this Article REMEMBER THAT POSTCARD with a picture of a spiral galaxy, with an arrow pointing to a place toward the edge, and the caption, "You Are Here?" Consider, for a moment, the possibility that this postcard is the only true fact you really know. Apart from the symbolic representation of using another galaxy to depict our own (we can't photograph the Milky Way from the outside quite yet), it's arguable that all you can really say for sure about your existence is that you are alive, and you live on a planet next to a star at the edge of a big spiral thing in space. It's pretty poetic, when you think about it. Essentially, it's a bit of knowledge that points to a vast mystery, and little else. My friend Hilary had a child named Zaia a few years back, and one day when he was very small, she said to him, "Where did you come from?" His hand shot up like and arrow, with a finger pointing toward the sky.

Geeks will remind you that since there was no Year Zero the millennium does not end until midnight of the last day of 2000, a year which is actually the capstone, the final gleaming jewel gracing our glorious Twentieth Century of social reforms, great literature, UFO encounters and the invention of something called "ecocide." Yet time is arbitrary. It's been many decades since Einstein proved you could stretch or squish space and time like a bugger, and about a stadium full of physicists have upheld his eloquent Theories of Relativity, which we ignore.

Francis died. for putting human utility and convenience ahead of the moral obligationsof human beings to other living things was Pretty much complete.
    http://www.imma.org/misanthrope.html
Was St. Francis a Misanthrope? Presentation to the congregation of St. James the Apostle Church, Guelph Ontario 18 October, 1998 In gratitude for the honour of their conferring the Feast of St. Francis Award by Peter Meisenheimer International Marine Mammal Association I would like to begin by expressing my gratitude to the congregation of St. James the Apostle and to Canon Lebans for the honour of this award. As a biologist, it is my job to study the lives of animals and to explain their workings to others, and it has been my good fortune to have been able to pursue my career in ways that promote the welfare of wild creatures and the places in which they live. I love my work, and I suppose I feel a little bit sheepish accepting your thanks for something I have enjoyed doing so much. I must also acknowledge that none of the things on which I have worked would have been possible without the support of many people who have contributed their time, their money and their emotion to doing what they believed was right. When I was told that some sort of talk was expected of the St. Francis Award recipient, I was unsure of what to say. In my line of work I am usually called on to deliver a dry and dusty academic dissertation with tables and pie-charts, or a fire-breathing polemic on why it is imperative that something or other be promoted or opposed. Neither seemed very appropriate for this sort of occasion.
