The illustrations of HOWARD PYLE (1853-1911) are as exciting now as they were a hundred years ago, while pictures by many of his contemporaries today look dated and mannered.
Several special qualities combined to make Pyle America's foremost illustrator. Pyle was interested in pictures, first of all, as drama. As a young man his initial reaction to a theatrical performance had made a great impression on him and influenced his point of view from then on. In his illustrations, Pyle sought to dramatize themes with universal appeal. The pictures portrayed basic human emotions: the ruthlessness of pirate greed, raw grief in the break-up of Lee's army after Appomattox, smug pride, humble petition.
Pyle's concept of a picture was never trite. He deliberately looked for new ways to tell a story and involved himself in his subject so thoroughly that his pictures make the reader and eye-witness to a vivid experience.
Having evolved his basic pictorial idea, Pyle developed his compositions; his pictures are fascinating to analyze. No area of a picture is wasted; each makes its contribution, through placement, line, tone or color, to the whole story. Through the details, the viewers eye is purposefully led toward the focal center.

Howard Pyle, b. Wilmington, Del., Mar. 5, 1853 , d. Nov. 9, 1911 , was a noted American illustrator and author whose work is characterized by an imaginative and colorful realism and a passion for historical detail. He illustrated numerous historical and adventure stories for such periodicals as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas as well as his own books for children, including The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and Otto of the Silver Hand In his later years Pyle devoted most of his time to teaching such outstanding illustrators of the succeeding generation of the American Brandywine school as Maxfield Parrish , Frank E. Schoonover, Jessie Wilcox Smith and N. C. Wyeth
My grandfather, Ellis Augustus Oliver , was a member of Howard Pyle's last class at Drexel in Philadelphia before Pyle retreated permanently to Wilmington. Barry McWilliams and Batsy Bybell have cooperated to create a more extensive website devoted to Howard Pyle that includes ten of Pyle's own stories.

Education
My grandfather, Ellis Augustus Oliver , was born to Andrew B. and Sarah Frances (Coil) Oliver on 5 September 1872 in Van Wert County, Ohio. He participated in official classes at Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry under Howard Pyle (1853-1911). E.A. Oliver was a member of Pyle's final course there that began in February 1899. Pyle had been teaching illustration at Drexel since 1894. The majority of his students followed Howard Pyle to his own " Brandywine School " in Wilmington, Delaware , but Grandfather did not. Perhaps, at 25, he had finally landed a job making pictures in Philadelphia's burgeoning advertising industry. The Philadelphia Ledger, The Saturday Evening Post , and numerous monthlies and weeklies clogged the wharves of the nations' most significant port, and the maw of capitalistic promotion and exploitation devoured the artistic talent of WWI's survivors. "E. A. Oliver's name appears on the printed listings of Drexel's annual exhibitions of student work shown at the end of each school year. He did not, however, complete a certificate or a diploma " (Joy Collins, 1993).

Howard Pyle
PYLE, Howard , artist, b. in Wilmington, Del., 5 March, 1853. He studied art in a private school in Philadelphia, and in 1.876 came to New York. After spending three years in that city writing and illustrating for various magazines, he returned to Wilmington, where he has since resided. Besides furnishing illustrations for various books and periodicals, he has written and illustrated numerous articles, most of them for the publications of Harper Brothers. He is the author of the text and drawings of "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" " Pepper and Salt " and "Within the Capes" (1885) ; and "The Wonder Clock" and " The Rose of Paradise" (1887). Mr. Pyle is favorably known as a writer of juvenile fiction, in his illustrations for which he has adopted a quaint style of design. "The earth and the air and the sky were all still, just as it is at twilight, and I heard them laughing and talking in the tap-room of the Inn of the Sign of Mother Goose the linking of glasses, and the rattling and clatter of knives and forks and plates and dishes. That is where I wished to go. So in I went. Mother Goose herself opened the door, and there I was.
"The room was full of twilight; but there they sat, every one of them. I did not count them, but there were ever so many: Aladdin, and Ali Baba, and Fortunatis, and Jack-the-Giant-Killer, and Doctor Faustus, and Bidpai, and Cinderella, and Patient Grizzle, and the Soldier who cheated the Devil, and St. George, and Hans in Luck, who traded and traded his lump of gold until he had only an empty churn to show for it; and there was Sinbad the Sailor, and the Tailor who killed seven flies at a blow, and the Fisherman who fished up the Genie, and the Lad who fiddled for the Jew in the Bramble Bush, and the Blacksmith who made death sit in his appletree, and Boots, who always marries the princess, whether he wants to or not a rag-tag lot as ever you saw in your life, gathered from every place, and brought together in Twilight Land.
"Each one of them was telling a story . . ."
