HOWARD PYLE
Several special qualities combined to make Pyle America's foremost illustrator. Pyle was interested in pictures, first of all, as drama. As a young man his initial reaction to a theatrical performance had made a great impression on him and influenced his point of view from then on. In his illustrations, Pyle sought to dramatize themes with universal appeal. The pictures portrayed basic human emotions: the ruthlessness of pirate greed, raw grief in the break-up of Lee's army after Appomattox, smug pride, humble petition. Pyle's concept of a picture was never trite. He deliberately looked for new ways to tell a story and involved himself in his subject so thoroughly that his pictures make the reader and eye-witness to a vivid experience. Having evolved his basic pictorial idea, Pyle developed his compositions; his pictures are fascinating to analyze. No area of a picture is wasted; each makes its contribution, through placement, line, tone or color, to the whole story. Through the details, the viewers eye is purposefully led toward the focal center. Pyle wrote, as well as illustrated, many books himself. He did original research on the obscure subject of the buccaneers in the New World. It is from his famous

It is perhaps not surprising that Howard Pyle, the premier artist of the "Golden Age of American Illustration," would have espoused American training for American artists. Pyle resisted the idea of going to Europe literally until the end of his life (he died of a kidney infection while visiting Italy) because he felt that Europe exerted too great a hold on the imagination and even talent of American artists. Yet much of the work that influenced Pyle in his youth was European, and many of the subjects that he pursued so distinctively in his mature work were European as well. As a child growing up in Delaware, Pyle learned the art of storytelling from children's classics such as Grimm's fairy tales, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Robinson Crusoe. From illustrated editions of authors including Dickens and Thackeray, Pyle first began to study the interaction of written text and art. In the Pre-Raphaelites artists Pyle's mother favored, he began to understand the ways in which color, line, and detail combine to tell a visual story. Pyle studied technique in Philadelphia before heading to New York in 1876 to pursue a career in illustration and writing at magazines such as Scribner's Monthly, Harper's

By nightfall, the Americans were in retreat, and within two weeks the British occupied the capital. Yet the fierce battle, the deadliest to that date in the war for independence, metaphorically transformed the terrain, sanctifying the river and gently rolling farmland with the blood of patriotism. A Brush with Conflict: The Battle of Brandywine in Art , an exhibition opening September 7, 2002 and continuing through November 24, 2002 at the Brandywine River Museum, presents images by artists of two centuries who found inspiration in the events, the landscape, and the personalities of the battle. Documents of history, such as informational broadsides, maps and engravings, are not found in this exhibition. Rather

Photos: Brian Vanden Brink T he eerie, the uncanny, and the unexpected will be featured in Wondrous Strange , the inaugural exhibition at the Farnsworth Art Museum's Center for the Wyeth Family in Maine. On view through November 8, 1998, the exhibition presents a fresh and surprising view of the art of the Wyeths, showing how it is rooted in literary fancies: tales of exotic adventures and spiritual journeys, stories of romantic encounters, and children's fables, all played out on the stage of everyday life. Wondrous Strange was conceived by Andrew Wyeth's wife, Betsy James Wyeth, and organized by Mrs. Wyeth in collaboration with the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington and the Farnsworth Art Museum. After its debut at the Farnsworth Center for the Wyeth Family in Maine, the exhibition will travel to the Delaware Art Museum for viewing from December 10, 1998 to February 7, 1999. More than 100 works of art will be on display in Wondrous Strange , drawn from 40 public and private collections in the United States and abroad. The exhibition includes 25 to 30 works apiece by N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth. Also on view: 25 to 30 pictures by Howard Pyle, the outstanding American illustrator who was N.C. Wyeth's teacher, and whose influence runs through the work of all three generations of Wyeths.
