Morgan Le Fay Morgan le Fay is, in Malory's Morte d'Arthur, Arthur's half sister, the daughter of Arthur's mother Igraine and her first husband, the Duke of Cornwall. She is also presented as an adversary of Arthur's: she gives Excalibur to her lover Accolon so he can use it against Arthur (a story retold in Madison J. Cawein's poem "Accolon of Gaul") and, when that plot fails, she steals the scabbard of Excalibur which protects Arthur and throws it into a lake. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight she is presented as the instigator of the Green Knight's visit to Arthur's court, partly motivated by her desire to frighten Guinevere. Her enmity towards Guinevere has its origin in the Vulgate Lancelot, where Morgan is having an affair with Guiomar, Guinevere's cousin, and Guinevere puts an end to it. Despite the motif of Morgan's enmity towards Arthur and Guinevere, she is also presented as one of the women who takes Arthur in a barge to Avalon to be healed. This view of Morgan as healer has its roots in the earliest accounts of her and perhaps to her origin in Celtic mythology. In the Vita Merlini (c. 1150) Morgan is said to be the first of nine sisters who rule The Fortunate Isle or the Isle of Apples and is presented as a healer as well as a shape-changer. It is to this island that Arthur is brought (though Morgan awaits him and heals him rather than actually fetching him herself). Morgan proclaims that she can heal Arthur if he stays with her for a long time. Morgan is also said to be the wife of King Uriens and the mother of Yvain or Ywain. Malory makes Morgan the wife of King Urien Rheged, an historical mid to late 6th century King of what is now Cumberland and Westmorland in Northern Britain. Though technically this may have been just about possible, during this time period it is stretching credulity a little far. Morgan was an elder half-sister of King Arthur who fought at Mount Badon around 495-500 and traditionally died in 537. Urien was assassinated during a military campaign around 590. The earlier Vulgate Cycle, however, makes Morgan a generation younger, being the daughter of King Lot of Lothian (Gododdin). On the other hand, Welsh Tradition tells us that Urien's wife was Modron ferch Afallach, apparently a sister-in-law of King Maelgwn Gwynedd, and it may be that two ladies have become confused.

The tales were collected and written down as early as the fourth century B.C. The Fables were one of the first books printed; an Italian edition of 1474 still exists. While not specifically written for children, their brevity and wit quickly captured the imagination, and their morals made adults view them as appropriate for young people. Issue 2 of my new magazine features Howard Pyle artwork Four classic Howard Pyle pen and ink pieces in First Annual Collection Second and foremost, Howard Pyle was a teacher. That said, firstly he was an artist, an artist who changed the way the world looked at illustration and the way illustration looked to the world. Before Pyle, and indeed for many years after his career started, illustrations for adventure stories looked like the image at right. Their most noticeable trait was their "staginess" - the flat "stage" of the ground, the posed "actors" and the scenery "props" to support them. It could easily have been photographed from front row center. The stage manger might call "break" and the actors would walk off and prepare for the next scene. And this is the good stuff - A.B. Frost from 1890. Then Pyle showed up. Born in 1853, he seemed determined from a precociously early age to become an author and more importantly an artist. By 1876, he moved to New York at the encouragement of Scribner's Magazine , for whom the drawing at left was made, also in 1890. Compare it with the Frost. First off, we know this isn't a stage - we can't even see the ground. The scenery seems very un-prop-like, and it's quite obvious that the only "break" that's going to occur at the end of this scene is someone's leg or head. The tension in the Frost scene is in our minds, that of Pyle's is before our eyes. His every drawing wasn't this dynamic, nor was every assignment rife with such potential scenes, but Pyle saw the action in art, and put it on the page for all to share. Howard Pyle Howard Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1853 and spent his entire life there, excluding two years in New York at the beginning of his career and one year in Italy, where he died in 1911. As a child, he commuted to a small art school in Philadelphia. His first illustration appeared in 1876 in the old Scribner¹s Magazine. From then until his death he contributed stories, pictures and covers to the leading periodicals in the country including Harper¹s Ladies Home Journal, St. Nicholas, Collier¹s Weekly and The Century Magazine. His book illustrations include Robin Hood, King Arthur and his Knights, The Champions of the Round Table, Pepper and Salt and The Wonder Clock. In technical virtuosity, factual accuracy and versatility he was considered the foremost illustrator of his time but what truly set his work apart was his spirit of imagination. By the 1890s, Pyle was established in his profession as an illustrator and had begun to spend the majority of his time teaching. Pyle set up his own school in studios built next to his own in Wilmington, with summer sessions at nearby Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He did not charge tuition and had over 100 students. He also taught at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and lectured at the Art Students League in New York. Many of the best known illustrators of the following two generations cherished his guidance. They include: W. H. D. Koerner, Violet Oakley, Maxfield Parrish, Frank Schoonover, Jessie Wilcox Smith and N.C. Wyeth.

During his prolific career, he produced 3,300 illustrations, many for his own articles and books. He taught at Drexel Institute and trained many important illustrators, including Frank Schoonover, Jessie Wilcox Smith and N.C. Wyeth. Peter A. Juley (1862-1937) came to the United States in 1888 from the small German town of Alf, on the Mosel. How he first became interested in photography and fine arts is not known, but around 1896 he opened a small portrait studio in Cold Spring, New York. Around 1907, following a brief period as a staff photographer for Harper's Weekly Juley re-established his photography business in New York City, and a few years later his son, Paul P. Juley (1890-1975), became a partner. Father and son specialized in photographing works of art and in taking portraits of artists. Throughout the firm's long history from 1896 to 1975, Peter A. Juley and Son became the largest and most respected fine-art photography studio in New York, serving museums, galleries, art dealers, private collectors, corporations, conservators, and almost every major American artist.
